In 2010 California had its chance to become the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana, medical or not. Proposition 19 was voted down.

Tonight it appears that Colorado voters have done what otherwise liberal Californians could not: Legalize pot for recreational use.

That state's constitutional amendment ...

... was running 53 percent in favor, 47 against. Backers declared victory.

Of course, with the federal government continuing to argue that pot isn't legal -- regardless of what states do -- it will be remain to be seen if Colorado citizens will truly be free to smoke 'em if they got 'em.

The sheer numbers of bloated prison - sheriff - police unions...Criminal defense lawyers associations and behemoth pharmaceutical manufacturers in California was enough to defeat the vote! Throw in the central California red-necks and we were doomed from the start!

@SedonaShaman The people who voted down Prop 19 were the old school growers in the Emerald Triangle. Those counties had the largest percentage of votes against the proposition.

What an embarrassment for California, along with not legalizing same-sex marriage. Get with the program people!
