Turkey Abuse: Watch The Animal Rights Video That Will Ruin Your Thanksgiving

Updated at the bottom with a statement from Butterball, which says the action caught on tape was under investigation. First posted at 12:03 p.m.

Pretty soon animal rights activists will be decrying the suffering of corn -- all that slow grilling and hot butter. The humanity.

For now, however, the movement is slowly approaching everything on your dinner table, even the sanctity of America's Thanksgiving meal.

That's right, turkey abuse is a thing now. Is anything sacred?

The Los Angeles-based group Mercy For Animals today unveiled video it says ...

... shows workers kicking and stomping on birds, dragging them by their fragile wings and necks, and maliciously throwing turkeys onto the ground or on top of other birds. It also shows turkeys suffering from serious untreated illnesses and injuries left to slowly suffer and die.

Way to warm up the season, Mercy.

The tape, revealed at an 11 a.m. press conference downtown today, was taken at Butterball factories, including one in North Carolina.

Mercy says it's similar to similar video captured last year that "resulted in criminal animal cruelty convictions for Butterball employees."

Yep, turkey production is a dirty business, it would seem. The group claims that the beasts are bred to grow too big too fast and end up with bone defects, crippling deformities and even heart attacks.

Mercy's executive director Nathan Runkle:

Butterball has once again been caught in the act of subjecting animals to horrific cruelty and violence and should be held criminally accountable. Before ending up on Thanksgiving dinner plates, turkeys killed for Butterball are routinely crowded into filthy warehouses, left to die from festering, bloody wounds, and thrown, kicked, and beaten by factory farm workers.

So now we gotta eat Tofurky?

Bon appetit.

[Update at 5:18 p.m.]: Butterball sent this statement to the Weekly:

Butterball is aware of the video released today by Mercy for Animals, and we take any allegations of animal mistreatment very seriously. As has been our long-standing policy, we have a zero tolerance policy for animal abuse. Any employee found to have violated our animal care and well-being guidelines, as well as any employee who witnessed abuse and failed to report it, will be terminated. Butterball's guidelines are based on guidelines developed by the National Turkey Federation that have been approved by animal well-being experts including Dr. Joy Mench at University of California at Davis, Dr. Janice Swanson from Michigan State University and Dr. Gail Golab at the American Veterinary Medical Association, among others.

When we learn of any instances of animal mistreatment, we take immediate corrective action to suspend workers involved, conduct a swift investigation and terminate their employment with the company. Upon learning of these new concerns, we immediately initiated an internal investigation and suspended the associates in question. Pending the completion of that investigation, Butterball will then make a determination on additional actions including immediate termination for those involved.

Animal care and well-being is central to the operations of our company, and we remain committed to the ethical and responsible care of our turkey flocks.

Turkey Rights: humanitarian violence-free killing.

This moron of a journalist is now saying on his Twitter page that most of the comments are about corn! What a joke!! Only 2 comments by readers on here are about corn you idiot! But I guess you'll want to count this one too won't you?

Please educate me, what would be considered a humane method of animal harvest?

GoVegan
GoVegan like.author.displayName 1 Like

@CuriousOmnivore There is none. Murder is not humane.

CuriousOmnivore
CuriousOmnivore

GoVegan should go read a dictionary and learn that murder pertains to the killing of humans and not animals.  I respect your choice to be a vegan despite you trying to force your lifestyle onto others.  Good luck in your futile cause.

Losing our grassland isn't humane either.  We need pastured animals to keep our soils rich so we can grow our grass and other plants.

ellowe13

 @AppropriateOmnivore

Pastured animals don't keep soils rich, they trample and consume to the root, native vegetation causing erosion and emit waste products that contaminate ground water.

Additionally, for every POUND of beef produced it takes 12 pounds of grain, 55 sq feet of forest/land and 2500 gallons of water.

That same amount land, grain and water could be used to feed several thousand people instead!

And having been born and raised on a dairy farm I actually do know what I'm talking about. And yes, I am a vegan.

@jellybean Again, something that can be used in people's homes, but animal fertilizer is the best solution for restoring grasslands  and to get the full permaculture with crops.

The soy which is fed to the animals that are bred and eventually compete with humans for food. When there are so many people go hungry in poor urban areas, animals are forcefully fed in farms with food that could be given to humans.

AppropriateOmnivore
AppropriateOmnivore

@jellybean Oh yeah, fertilizer that come from chemicals.  That's a great alternative.  We need animals in order to grow or crops.  Veganism leads to deserts.  Us raising our animals for  meat and poultry allow you to grow your soy.

jellybean
jellybean like.author.displayName 1 Like

There is always other alternatives. There's dozens of kinds of fertilizers. But that's not the point, since there are many ways of fertilizing lands. The main point is the ethical aspect of exploiting these animals. You can come up with millions of absurd reasons to justify enslaving and killing animals for profit and food (fertilizing land is one of them), but the bigger picture here is that meat consumers just shut down their conscience when they realize their role in perpetuating animal abuse. So is it the responsibility of those turkeys that they are treated inhumanely just so people can fertilize their lands?

AppropriateOmnivore

@jellybean The areas I'm talking about aren't forest and jungles, but lands that have been destroyed by the monocultures of plants that we're farming.  There are areas that we're unable to grow anything.  Raising animals there will be allow us to replenish the soil.  Joel Salatin's Polyface Farms was started on land where previously nothing was able to grow.  And there are forests and jungles cut down to grow fruits and vegetables.

jellybean
jellybean like.author.displayName 1 Like

Grasslands for animal farming used to be forests and jungles which did fine without farm animals until humans cut down all the trees. Also, do you see any of the turkeys sad feet on the grass where they're supposed to be? No, farm animals are caged and exploited. So your argument on needing pastured animals to keep soils rich is absurd and irrelevant.

What a disgusting excuse for news or journalism. Your utter disregard for the subject at hand, practically mocking what's being done to these animals and the people working tirelessly to have it exposed, is rather pathetic. The L.A. Weekly should really hire someone who can take serious issues seriously, and leave the chiding and joking to the plethora of articles they post about condoms and porn. Or what, is that something you take seriously and therefore wouldn't dare joke about?

Mr. Dennis Romero, You must understand, as animal rights activists, we are constantly fighting an uphill battle with EVERYONE. We live in an apathetic society and we're always reminded of animal cruelty though our friends and family who eat meat, through excessive advertising, by walking down the street and getting a strong whiff of BBQ etc. So we tend to be an intense and emotional bunch. We just find articles like yours to be insensitive... I hope that you can understand and move towards being more enlightened about our cause. Wishing you all the best and a cruelty-free Thanksgiving! Cheers!

This guy calling himself a journalist reminds me why I don't like conservative republicans and Catholics. Blabbing all about the bullshit of sanctity of life, sanctity of marriage rather than the quality of life and marriage. So to justify the cruelty of animals is the sanctity of his dinner. Not really sure why he wrote this piece of crap slamming animal rights people and justifying the cruelty towards these turkeys. Maybe just to put out there his ignorance and pride of his ignorance?

The Mercy for Animals video just shows the problems with factory farmed turkey.  Buy pastured turkey from a local farm.

I have a better idea: how about starting a pastured dogs business. They could be left running around happily and when they have enough meat, take them to the slaughterhouse.

It's really not about "animal rights" it's more about what right do we have to treat living breathing creatures like this? That video is so heinous I think people emotionally shut down and really don't know how to respond. The good news is that we all have a choice whether or not we want to support this industry.

You guys gotta lighten up. You're my-way-or-the-highway attitudes are why a lot of people have a hard time taking your movement seriously, frankly. Read the whole article. I'm not anti-animal rights. I was just ribbing you. It worked. Did you read this part?

@djromero sir, whatever your intention, it seems that it was not interpreted as "ribbing". Good to know for the future. thank you.

@djromero So you are entertained by the reactions of people who disagree with animal cruelty without considering the consequences of your published writing's message? When people in the mainstream are already justifying such torture towards animals, people who are concerned about animal welfare during Thanksgiving don't need this trashy, ignorant writing piece to remind us about how apathetic this society is. It's like splashing salt water to an open wound. You are such a disgrace to journalism for displaying such insensitivity.

@djromero DJ--your responses here are disappointing--you seem very caught up in "animal rights'" and "the movement" with sweeping statements like "you guys gotta lighten up"...animal agriculture today is a putrid business --anybody that doesn't see that isn't paying attention.

The most disturbing aspect of this article is that the quoted material suggests that breeding, confining and killing a turkey in a lawful manner is not "horrific cruelty and violence." It is horrific that we as a society sentence these sentient and innocent creatures to death from the moment they're born. I consider it a privilege that I'm able to opt out of this systematic and institutionalized violence and miscarriage of justice.

Does corn scream when you harvest it? No. Does it try to run away when you go near it? No. Corn is not a sentient being. Idiot 'journalist'. What a stupid article, written by some corpse eater who has obviously just had his first glimpse of animal cruelty and is pissed off that his conscience is going to getting at him every time he eats his beloved McCorpse burger and scrambled chicken periods.

Your attitude is not flattering to you, nor is it humorous. Why don't you be more open in your contempt for people who oppose cruelty? Just say that it is ok with you to abuse feeling birds, that you side with people who kick them and hit them. Be an honest sociopath, not an unfunny humorist.

It's on the page. Honestly, I'm so not down for animal cruelty. However, yes, I do think some of you are off-kilter and have too much free time.
