Update: More detail below. Feuer is in ICU, suffered lacerated spleen and broken ribs.

Assemblyman Mike Feuer, who is running for L.A. city attorney, has been hospitalized after a car crash this afternoon.

According to his campaign, Feuer was on his way to the swearing-in ceremony for D.A. Jackie Lacey when his Prius was hit by a truck that ran a red light.

"Mr. Feuer did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, however, he will stay in the hospital for the next few days," said John Shallman, Feuer's strategist.

Shallman said Feuer was expected to make a "full and speedy recovery." Dave Jacobson, a spokesman, said the campaign would not be affected.

"The campaign is moving full steam ahead," Jacobson said.

Feuer is running against incumbent City Attorney Carmen Trutanich in the March election.

Update, 2:45 p.m. Tuesday: In a more detailed statement today, Feuer's campaign says that the impact of the collision was so severe that paramedics used the Jaws of Life to extract him from his car.

At the hospital, doctors in the trauma unit found that he had multiple rib fractures, a lung contusion and a lacerated spleen. He is said to be recovering in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

He was alone in his car at the time of the crash.

Shallman, Feuer's strategist, says it is not yet clear when Feuer will be released, but that he anticipates it will be soon and he is expected to make a "full and prompt recovery."

"Mike's wife, Gail, is with him and they both wish to express their deepest appreciation and sincere thanks to the first responders and physicians and nurses who have cared for him," Shallman said. "Thanks also to his family, friends, constituents and supporters for their concern, prayers and well wishes. He's looking forward to getting back to work soon."

I wouldn't be surprised if the truck driver was some nasty Croat thug from San Pedro or even good old Carmen himself was behind the wheel of the truck.
