UC Logo Angers Students, Even Though Vintage Symbol To Remain

Students at University of California campuses are outraged.

There's war in Afghanistan. The Occupy nation is trying to prevent big banks, many of which were bailed out by taxpayers, from foreclosing on American homes. And student fees and tuition have just about tripled in the last 10 years.

But what these collegians are really mad about is ...

... design.

Yeah, they don't like the aesthetics of the new UC logo.

Here's the thing: The old logo will still remain. The new one will apply to websites.

Dianne Klein, spokeswoman for the 10-campus UC system, told the Los Angeles Times that the 1868 "Let There Be Light" logo will stay on diplomas and correspondence.

The Times paraphrases her:

... The old logo does not reproduce well in small size on Internet pages and that UC wanted something more visually contemporary and versatile, especially for online efforts to seek donations and recruit applicants.

These matchy-matchy kids aren't having though. According to a weekend change.org petition requesting that UC withdraw the logo:

The newly designed monogram of the University of California, while attempting to be modern, loses the prestige and elegance of the current seal.

Californiagoldenblogs.com says:

"The New University Of California Logo Needs To Die A Quick, Painful Death" and adds:

You wonder how people can be so clueless, so detached, so ignorant that they think they can just casually toss away a brand that has worked just fine for 140 years.

Very poorly designed... if it looks bad now... wait a couple decades... Ha, ha... great reason not to pursue a creative education there.

It's impossible to think about this issue through the impenetrable layer of snark in this post.

Do Weekly bloggers have to be a-holes about _everything_?

Dennis, are you saying that people should only be entitled to opinions about wars, protests, and personal finance? If those types of protests are so important to you, why are you wasting your time writing this piece rather than holding up a banner in Sproul Plaza yourself?

Really, it's OK to care about important and non-important things simultaneously.

odd symbol...very simple...trying to appeal to this new age of technology... But the symbol before was classic and scholarly like the schools themselves. This symbol reminds me of those random trade colleges you see in commercials.

And how much will this cost tax payers in California?

I totally understand the need for a logo that supports practical application, especially in modern mediums.. but it sure is ugly.

I'm not broken, Nia Nguyễn, yet you keep trying to fix me.
