Whomever said surfers were boys (and girls) of summer was dead wrong.

This isn't the Gidget era (and even then people were getting a lot of their kicks in the cold months). Southern California waters are a winter wonderland this time of year: 'Tis the season for big, glassy west and northwest swells.

As a winter front approaches, the National Weather Service has more of that kind of fun on-tap for experienced wave-riders:

Starting this morning the NWS is expecting high surf and possible flooding along the coast as a result of the front and high "king tides" that will be strongest Friday morning (about a 7 footer is expected around 8:10 a.m.).

The tide alert probably applies mostly to the usual suspects -- Sunset Beach, Seal Beach in Orange County.

But the big waves won't discriminate too much.

Expect surf at 8 to 10 feet this morning and then building to as high as 15 feet, says the NWS. Best spots?

West and northwest facing beaches. But it will be rough, with stirring waters and rip tides.

Oh, and add "cold and windy" conditions and scattered showers Thursday to the mix, says the NWS. Guess you can leave the bikini at home.
