Sorry, Porn Industry, But Americans Are Just Fine With Condom Sex, Study Says

Categories: Porn

Nina Hartley.
One of the arguments heard in the porn industry's fight against mandatory condoms is that they're uncomfortable and can help create harmful friction during sex.

Nina Hartley has been the most vociferous on this issue, once saying that "condom burn is a real issue. The friction from the latex, even with lubrication, is painful and breaches the integrity of my mucosal membranes, putting me at greater risk for disease transmission."

A new study might seem to refute her experience:

The research, published recently in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, concludes that both men and women consider condom sex to be as pleasurable as non-condom sex.

That doesn't mean that some folks might not be irritated (and, to be fair to Hartley, we can hardly imagine most Americans enduring hours of sex in the manner practiced by porn stars).

But, generally, Americans don't complain about condoms too much.

The porn industry also says consumers won't buy condom porn, another assertion that seems to be contradicted by this research.

According to a summary of 2009 data analyzed by Debby Herbenick and Michael Reece of Indiana University-Bloomington's School of Public Health, Americans aged 18 to 59 found sex indistinguishable when it comes to condoms:

Results showed that men and women consistently rate sex as highly arousing and pleasurable with few differences based on condom or lubricant use.

Perhaps speaking to the porn industry, Irwin Goldstein, MD, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, says:

Understanding current condom use offers health care providers an opportunity to educate those people uncomfortable with condoms but for whom lack of use may lead to significant sexually transmitted infection health risk.

The porn business is fighting a successful voter initiative that mandates condom use for adult video shoots in most of L.A. county. It has taken the county to court, arguing that the mandate violates filmmakers freedom of speech.

I can't believe the ignorance and stubborness exists, still. Sure it feels better without a condom but personally I'd rather protect my heath, not to mention my life. This willfull stupidity is both frightening and sad:(

The other point is that Dennis Romero completely misinterprets the actual Indiana Univ. survey, which stated and concluded that the majority of "civilians" found no difference in pleasure between using condoms and not using condoms. Aside from the fundamental difference between performance sex and sex in private, how this can be used to smear Nina Hartley's position, which deals strictly with the perils and hazards of condomized sex in performance scenes, is a mystery only Mr. Romero and his boosters at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (and their sponsors at Trojan and Lifestyles) can answer.

Aside from the essential fact that the survey is sponsored by a condom company, and that it is fatally flawed by its assumptions about real life sex versus performance sex in porn, the fact remains that Nina Hartley and Vicky Vette are absolutely correct about the differences between performance sex in porn and real life sex performed in the "civilian world".

It should not be the function of adult sexual media to be forced to sacrifice their art solely for the whim of public relations or public health. No other medium is told that they must adjust their art form to adapt to arbitrary rules of "safety" merely to sell behavior modification.

Also...to dismiss the experience of a woman who has spent her lifetime educating people about the joys and the responsibilities of safer sex (and who has never opposed the voluntary use of condoms as a means of protection, only the forced imposition of them by government regulation), simply smacks of the same old paternalism that has been used against sex workers for time immortal.

Plus, I find it interesting that 2009 data from a selected survey of civilian users of condoms is being used as a tool to justify forcing condoms on porn performers merely on the grounds of "selling safer sex", as if anyone who does bareback sex without a condom is automatically assumed to be inferior and at risk.

And...this doesn't even begin to address the free speech issues of imposing mandated condom usage on private individuals in the privacy of their own homes.

I wouldn't wear them if it weren't for the threat of STDs and unwanted pregnancy.

i'd like to meet anyone that thinks condom sex is as pleasurable as unprotected.

Having sex in your personal life is completely different than filming a porn scene. The actual penetration part of sex for the average couple, after all the kissing, petting and oral sex, might only be about 10 minutes before you both orgasm and have a smoke. When shooting a porn, the actual penetration part may go on for several hours. Nina is correct, after that long, no matter how much lube you use there is burning from the rubber plus the rubbers break all the time.

Your survey is flawed because the people you are asking are not aware of this. They assume we have sex for 10 minutes just like they do, they don't realize that a lot of sex is edited out and a lot more goes into a production than what they see in the finished product. It's just not a fair comparison.

I would prefer stringent testing to condoms, but I believe in choice, if a girl wants to use a condom she should have that right, but if she prefers not to, and both parties have less than 2 week old tests, they should also have that right.

They are fighting for the right to NOT being forced to wear a condom while filming a porn scene. Performers should have the freedom to choose whether or not they want to wear a condom.

Sorry, Dennis,  they are fighting for the right to NOT being forced to wear a condom while filming a porn scene. Performers should have the freedom to choose whether or not they want to wear a condom.

I can see where you're coming from, but after working in the adult industry for quite some time (not as a performer, but I do know several) I can say for a fact that the careless ones are those who are considered average folks. They are the ones I have to constantly try to convince to be more careful, go get tested on a very regular basis, and know the consequences. And actually, many porn stars do use condoms by choice.

Rachel, I've heard differently. Regardless, it doesn't really matter to me what the rates are. There's no "choice" in the industry. It's go raw or don't work for the most part. People need to stop framing this as a "choice" issue... and everything else for that matter. It's not. It's a workplace safety issue. Arguing that rates of infection are low is, IMHO, a bit like saying that a lot more ironworkers could fall off buildings, so we don't need safety equipment for them. The fact that I'd rather beat off to people having sex without a condom seems a pretty piss poor reason to advocate against condom use.

@Nicholas Pell Sure there is a choice in the industry, if  someone doesn't like it, they can choose to find another career.

Sorry, blogger, it's about the right NOT to wear a condom.

Clearly none of you have worked in the healthcare industry and seen what genital warts and herpes really look like? Not very pretty at ANY age, and never very much fun for me to educate on. If you fuck, put your frock on.

Rachel Takiko Janke

Nicholas - The porn industry has a much lower rate of infection than the rest of the population. Most average people don't bother to get tested on a regular basis. Basically, a majority of those who work in porn are much healthier than they are given credit for.

I doubt that the average person's intercourse lasts as long as a typical porn shoot, which like any motion picture tries to film as much footage as they can so they can edit a bunch out later and still have enough for the scene. That's what accounts for the discomfort. Also, I thought the issue was more of the industry being anxious that consumers wouldn't buy condom scenes as much.

Using a rubber is like taking a bath with your socks on!

What people like is sort of not the issue. The issue is workplace safety. This has ZERO to do with "free expression" and everything to do with providing a safe workplace.
