Christopher Dorner: Some African Americans Believe Racism Allegations, Call Him 'Hero'

dorner flag.JPG
Disgraced ex-LAPD cop Christopher Dorner has been described by police and experts as a delusional and perhaps even psychopathic killer.

But in the African American community he's often viewed in a different light -- as a victim of racism who became unhinged only after exhausting legitimate avenues to fight the good fight against his firing. Some are even calling him a hero.

How can distinct communities view a man so differently?

On Twitter some people expressed support for Dorner and his anti-police reign of terror. One user said this:

God bless you Chris #Dorner Stay safe, we believe you.

Dorner was fired by the department in 2008 for allegedly lying when he said his training officer kicked a suspect in the head. He fought the action and took the department to court, only to lose.

In his alleged manifesto, Dorner mentions racism four times and points to his background as an integral part of his case. One passage states:

Terminating officers because they expose a culture of lying, racism (from the academy), and excessive use of force will immediately change. PSB [Public Safety Bureau] can not police their own and that has been proven. The blue line will forever be severed and a cultural change will be implanted. You have awoken a sleeping giant.

I am here to change and make policy. The culture of LAPD versus the community and honest/good officers needs to and will change. I am here to correct and calibrate your morale compasses to true north.

Those Caucasian officers who join South Bureau divisions (77th,SW,SE, an Harbor) with the sole intent to victimize minorities who are uneducated, and unaware of criminal law, civil law, and civil rights. You prefer the South bureau because a use of force/deadly force is likely and the individual you use UOF [use of force] on will likely not report it.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck speaks about Dorner.

It goes on to single out even African American officers who, the manifesto argues, "perpetuated the cycle of racism in the department as well. You breed a new generation of bigoted caucasian officer when you belittle them and treat them unfairly."

The document alleges that some Latino officers "victimize their own ethnicity" because recent immigrants don't know their rights.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson of The Hutchinson Report and the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, says Dorner's allegations "have resonance" in L.A.'s African American community.

"I'm not surprised," he says, "that Dorner would emerge almost as a folk hero, a perverse Robinhood."

He adds:

Some people are saying he's exposing a brutal truth about the LAPD -- that there's a history there that this guy was a part of and that he was even victimized by uncovering abuse and bringing it out and paying the price for it.

There's always antagonism toward the LAPD in the community.

Hutchinson thinks the department has changed for the better since the 1980s and '90s. He cites officer discipline, community outreach, fewer deadly officer-involved shootings, and a more diverse force (the LAPD is now so-called majority minority).

But Hutchinson says he's also disturbed by a string of use-of-force incidents last year caught on tape, including one in which a South L.A. mother, kicked in the crotch by an officer, died.

"They still have a ways to go," he says. "I think this is a wake-up call."

He adds:

Despite the best efforts of the department to improve its operations and image, I still think it would behoove the department to take a close look at this to see if there's any truth to it [the manifesto] and take proper steps to address problems he alleges still exist in the police department.

Political commentator Jasmyne Cannick says she believes the allegations in the Dorner document, telling the Weekly:

I read that manifesto. I just think he's telling the truth. I think a lot of people black and white think he's telling the truth ... I wouldn't go so far as to say he's a hero. He's taken people's lives. That isn't right. But people have a breaking point.

Cannick, whose mother worked at the department, acknowledges that the LAPD has changed for the better since the days of the riots and the Rampart Scandal. But she says she hopes the department takes Doroner's allegations seriously.

A lot of that manifesto is about racial injustice. The LAPD continually talks about how it's a new day. This is an opportunity to test the theory that it's a new day at the LAPD.

Tomorrow at noon Hutchinson will discuss Dorner and race on KPFK (90.7 FM).

LAPD Cop Killer Christopher Dorner Is A Hero?  How can any sane mind possibly think this?  This guy guy stalked and murdered an innocent daughter, and her fiance, of a guy who tried to defend him against allegations of his co-workers.  I really can't think of anything more cowardly than that, surely not hero material.  This guy may or may not have a valid grievance against the LAPD, but it has been shown that he has been seriously troubled in recent years, even before he was fired from the LAPD.  It also appears he may have been mentally troubled since his childhood.  It is easy to blame everyone else for your lack of success, but there are many successful folks in his chosen field all around him.  Why would they have expended energies to persecute him?  I think the trouble may have been him all along.

@JohnPublicIf you are going to say that "if someone knowingly kills an innocent person as a means to some political end then they are a terrorist", you have to come to the conclusion that the US military are also terrorists because they knowingly kill civilians (they excuse it as casualties of war) in order to achieve some political end. You have to then say that the US military is not sane minded, they are murderers, they are cowards, troubled since infancy, blameful of others, and have been the trouble all along. I'm not saying this is my opinion, I'm saying that using your logic consistently because if x is true then y is true, you have to come to this conclusion. If you say that "killing is ok as long as it is for these reasons" then anyone can use that to defend themselves. Do you see how you're reasoning is not logical at all?

Typically sad, the people who think this criminal is a hero are the same ones with they're hands out receiving welfare benefits. Shameful.

OJ is innocent. Dorner is innocent. All the murderers in jail are innocent. It's the bad policeman that set them all up. yeah, that's what happened.

The navy tossed him. Lapd tossed him. But it's everyone else right? It couldn't be him could it? nah, . Wow , he saw someone get kicked. wow. How traumatic.

I think I know what he is. A lying n^gger.

This what happens when people are so disenfranchised. I know it is difficult to comprehend, he almost becomes a folk hero to some. It's the same as OJ. Blacks didn't have any love for him or thought he wad truly innocent, but when he beat the case the disenfranchised rejoiced.

Cartellia Marie Bryant

he's no hero in my opinion, but that's not to say his statements shouldn't be investigated to remove any reasonable doubt.

Julee Ellison

I don't think it is just blacks, but all races, and I don't think rational people think he is a hero. They think he is someone that was wronged by the very government and police force for which he served. Why can't the officer and the superiors that know that the officer did indeed kick the mentally ill person just come out and admit it, and put an end to this? Because then they'd possibly expose all of the lies and cover ups that ended his career, which is why he is doing what he is doing. This is all so sad. To know that someone that served not only our country, but our local police force, could find no one that would step up and state the truth.

Regardless of what he says or thinks, or how he's been treated or how he may have treated others, he's still a murderer.

Meanwhile the LAPD shoots and injures innocent people while "investigating" this. Way to go to prove the points in the "manifesto" about excessive force. It does excess. And rarely is it prosecuted.

Yeah, this is absurd. This 'journalist' doesn't seem to perform or site any sort of legitimate research to determine that a majority of his 'supporters' are "African American". This is incredibly irresponsible. As a journalist/reporter you have a responsibility to report the NEWS not your opinion. I'm white and everyone I've spoken to about this incident is raising a brow to it. Especially the way these cops are responding to it. They are opening fire on the public in a way that should scare people. If I was a citizen in LA I would protest the LAPD, not in support of Dorner's ALLEGED (yes, they are alleged, not convicted which the media can't seem to wrap their heads around) actions but the way the LAPD is responding. Pumping 40+ rounds into a truck with 2 asian women with no warning. I don't understand how these individuals are not in custody right now. How are these officers not accountable for their actions? How is the media not scrutinizing these activities? I really don't understand why these areas aren't scrutinized? Why is it taboo to call into question the police actions on these events? Why are you as a journalist choosing to talk about some speculative conjured up story about the African American community in support of this. You as a journalist are INCREDIBLY IRRESPONSIBLE.

You know how the media says that his manifesto is "rambling?" It isn't. It's long, and not always well-composed, and you might or might not agree with what he says-- certainly not his conclusions-- but it's very focused. Read it for yourself; http://pastebin.com/TAzPRfPy

This guy has a vendetta. He's not out to kill little kids. He's out to get justice from officials who took it away. It's unfortunate that innocent officers died, but that's collateral damage

Bridget McGraw-Bordeaux

But how do we know he was incompetent? Why wasn't he brought up on charges for making the false claims that cost him his job? Like for real, I don't agree with him killing people, but I wonder if we are just this far gone and complacent that this is the only way for someone like him to get our attention. What I find doubly creepy is that the more public opinion seems to support him -in theory- the harsher the media is condemning him. It's like they're working their hardest to remind us to be good little consumers who don't question anything

I wish the lapd would extend this type of effort in capturing other criminals- not just the ones that directly affect them

Brett Hampton

He was an incompetent cop with a persecution complex. He's not "exposing" any corruption in the LAPD. He selfishly believes himself to be the victim and decided he was going to get revenge on the people who "wronged" him.

The corruption-fighting, pre-murder of 3 human beings version of him might have been considered a hero (if he's telling the truth), but it's been a train wreck downward spiral since. At this moment he's a murderer, not a hero.

Kris Noble

He is not a hero or an anti-hero, he is a murderer who killed two kids who had done no wrong to him. This is somebody who could have turned out to be an anti-establishment figure but instead has become just another lunatic with a gun

I don't think he's a psychopath... and if so, he will be found alive since America loves a good psychopath. If they shoot him, we'll all know that he wasn't as BAD as every is painting him to be. Los Angeles is bored.

He has no reasonable justification for killing those two kids. They did nothing to him and were not part of the power structure he claims he is fighting against. I have no sympathy and hope things end at least as terribly for him as they did for those kids.

He *did* attempt righting wrongs within the corrupt police force. He just seems to have spiraled wildly downward since they ruined his life for doing so. Not a hero in any form. But at one point, he was trying to be correct.
