Elisa Lam: Why Did She Appear To Be Acting So Strange?

Elisa Lam / LAPD

The seemingly strange behavior of once-missing tourist Elisa Lam paired with the discovery of her body Tuesday in a hotel water-storage tank begs questions about her actions before the 21-year-old's untimely death.

In an effort to find the Canadian traveler, the LAPD last week revealed security video of the woman in and out of what appears to be a hotel elevator. She pushes nearly all the buttons and walks in and out of the car, peering out in what could be interpreted as a fearful or almost paranoid fashion:

It's possible she was just scared because someone was following her and she couldn't get the car to move (it doesn't).

But we asked longtime club-drug expert Trinka Porrata, formerly of the LAPD, what her assessment was after viewing the video.

She says it's "hard to say" but ventured into the possibility that someone displaying similar behavior could be showing signs of ecstasy use:

She's "petting" something and then dancing a bit. Could be an Ecstasy pill that contains MDMA plus some other hallucinogen. Getting into the corner of the elevator and looking out repeatedly could seem like paranoia or just part of her hallucination. Hard to say from just that little bit. Even harder of course to guess whether it was something she took voluntarily or was slipped to her. Ecstasy IS considered a rape drug but so many pills called Ecstasy so often is a mixture or something else completely that they don't get the desired effects for a sexual assault.

Porrata, however, says ecstasy wouldn't be consistent with heading up to a water tank. She called that "a weird place to end up," unless Lam went their involuntarily.

She says those under the influence of MDMA ...

... can wander off to strange places in their hallucinations. Even if someone drugged her and her behavior went off the rails, it would be a strange place

She did say that PCP "has a tendency to 'attract' people to water."

The L.A. county coroner's office is investigating the woman's death and will conduct toxicology tests to determine if drugs were in Lam's body, an official told the Weekly.

Results usually aren't made public for 4 to 6 weeks.

Meanwhile, those Cecil Hotel guests downtown who were drinking water from that tank Tuesday and perhaps for days? They were offered a 25 percent discount, according to a caller on a local AM radio station yesterday.

I guess the "club-drug expert" has never taken LSD; because when I was young, I took LSD as well as MDMA and this has all the hallmarks of an LSD or mushroom trip.

MDMA / Ecstasy is nothing like this. She's obviously having disjointed hallucinations, not some sort of pleasure-tacticle trip.

Also, why does everyone keep saying she looks "scared" or "fleeing an attacker" when she enters the elevator? Those weird gestures happen afterward.

Look closely; she enters in a kind of bored-looking stupor, and her arms splays a bit loosey-goosey before she starts pressing ALL the buttons. She presses the buttons is a calm sort of dreamlike state, not even waiting to see if the first button works.

She's either tripping or has experienced a psychotic break.

Either way, poor creature.

um hello, what are they, retarded? Bath salts! Ever heard of them??? My husband's cousin died at 26 yrs old after taking bath salts and trying to get into a friends apt via the AC vents/ducts. She got stuck there. It seems ridiculous this drug isn't being taken into account.

Common sense would say that this poor girl was trying to escape from someone but that busted elevator in the broken down Hotel wouldn't work properly.  She's clearly scared and trying to hide from someone but gets exasperated that the elevator won't move like it should.  Sadly, that person obviously did get to her and murdered her, and threw her body in the water tank.  Hopefully the LAPD will be somewhat competent and find her killer.

This is a bizarre coincidence, there was a Japanese movie made called 'Dark Water' , where a mother and her toddler daughter move into a sleazy hotel and the little girl ends up climbing into the hotel water tank, and throughout the movie they have elevator trouble with people having funny tasting water etc. Extremely strange coincidence. See the trailer of the movie here

There is something weird going on with that hotel.  Night Stalker serial killer Richard Ramirez lived on the 14th floor, problem is , it was the 13th floor , because the 14th floor is ALWAYS really the 13th floor, as the builders refuse to put a 13th floor in all buildings.  There is never a 13th floor button in an elevator. The physical 13th floor is named the 14th floor.  NEVER live on the 12th floor of a public apartment building because satanists will often live on the floor directly above you and keep you awake all night with harassing noises.  Two serial killers lived there, and now this strange crap going on happening to Elisa Lam, and her parents refuse to say why she was really in California. I bet she was mixed up with some cult that her parents are involved in like the moonies or Scientology or something.....Some sort of coverup is going on here maybe. ...watch this on the Nightstalker, he was obviously a patsy for a cult behind the murders.

The Christopher Dorner Case happened just after she disappeared, I remembered hearing about this young girl missing. While the entire city was in an uproar over Dorner, there may have been some foul play during those 3 weeks when every law enforcement person attended to Dorner. Maybe a  hotel cover up (only 1 video camera?) or an employee involvement. Evidence within those 3 weeks may have vanished. Killer still at large.

She's not "petting something" invisible, she is either explaining to someone that the door won't close or she is trying to make sense of the seemingly broken door sensor. Then she makes a motion like 1,2,3 as if she's counting or listing something (grabs one finger, then two, then 3). She does seem either confused, panicked or high, but not sure why someone would point to Ecstasy of all possible things. I think there was someone else there but it may have just been a passing guest - in her impaired state it's possible she encountered someone elsewhere in the hotel murdered her.

@Pomegranate33

I totally agree with you!!!  I though the same thing.  I disagree with all of the other assumptions.  In my thoughts, I was thinking the same thing.  did you watch the video careflly?  In the door's reflection, you can see a shadow.  At first, I thought it was my imagination, but when Elisa sleps out of the elevator, you can see her shadow /reflection on the right hand door.  Look at the reflection on the right hand elevator door bfore she steps out in thebeginning of the video.

First off, 25% off is ridiculous. They should be fully refunded for drinking human remains.

Secondly, DRUGS? Are you kidding me? There was clearly someone outside of the elevator!!! The person outside of the elevator stayed to the side so that they wouldn't be shown in the camera. It looks like she goes & pushes all of the buttons trying to escape, but the person outside of the elevator is pushing the call button so that the elevator won't budge for her to go up. She goes in the elevator to get away from him ...and to try to make her escape. He gets her to come back out of the elevator ...and at a certain point, he stops pushing the call button so that the elevator can resume it's route. He probably takes her up the stairs which is where he kills her & throws her in the water tank to hide her body. Are police really that dumb? It's clearly obvious what happened.

@kelikani420 She also pushes all the middle column buttons because she is blind and not wearing her glasses. For all we know, they fell off while running away or she never had time to put them on when she tried to get off the floor. It seems she may have pressed the door open button too, impeding the doors from closing before this other person kept the doors from closing from outside. Her darting in and out may also have set off motion sensors that keep the doors from closing. It would SEEM from her reactions when looking out the elevator that this other person may not have followed her or found her at that spot until the time she stepped fully out and jumped with surprise.

Trinka Porrata is a retired LAPD narcotics detective who has made a cottage industry of telling alarming lies about Ecstasy.    A "Mom on a crusade", she has succeeded in misinforming and terrifying a number of small rural police departments throughout California.

Calling Trinka Porrata for her "insight" on this is a bit like calling Orly Taitz for legal advice.

Come the hell on, Dennis Romero.
Cheap and lazy reporting.

Drugs does not explain why the elevator didn't move. It looks like she presses the call button. I will bet she was either victimized by someone staying at the hotel or working in the hotel. You press all the buttons in an elevator so a person doesn't know what floor you got off at if you are being followed. Sucks for her the elevator didn't work properly. Why?

She looks to me like she's just playing around. Buzzed and goofing off with someone.  Maybe she tends to use her hands when she talks, but it also looks like she could be finger spelling out words. Was she hearing impaired or with anyone who is?

lapdog87

I think she was talking to someone outside the elevator. She is probably taking about why the elevator is not moving. I think she is one of those people who talks with her hands. It seems the person she is talking to goes away and she stops talking and her hands quit moving. She gives up and walks away maybe to the stairs?  That is where you see her left foot as she walks away.

Unfortunately, there seems to be some misinformation about the drugs mentioned in the article.

First, Ecstasy is not necessarily MDMA. MDMA is usually the primary ingredient in Ecstasy, but not all Ecstasy pills contain MDMA. It is not uncommon for Ecstasy pills to be cut with other drugs, and it is also not uncommon for Ecstasy pills to not contain any MDMA at all. So using the terms MDMA and Ecstasy are not necessarily interchangeable.

Secondly, MDMA is NOT a hallucinogen. Very misinformed. If you take MDMA or Ecstasy and you hallucinate, then it's very likely that it was cut with another drug, or that it wasn't MDMA at all. Also, MDMA shouldn't cause paranoia, either.

iheartmoosiq
iheartmoosiq

@Andy Ecstasy IS supposed to be MDMA, but nowadays the "pills" kids unsafely take are filled with all sorts of other junk. Correct, MDMA is NOT a hallucinogen, but a lot of the other fillers in the "E" or "X" that kids get nowadays are. MDA is often used in place of MDMA as a cheap filler, and it is a hallucinogen. Their chemical structures are very close but not the same.

The article does mention that it could have been MDMA and a hallucinogen, but the quote from Porrata is just absolutely false.

First of all, she doesn't have her glasses so she's blind. Second of all, she's obviously freaking out (could be from drugs but from all other factors, doesn't seem like it). THIRD and most discerning of all, at 2:28 when she was against the wall outside the elevator freaking out, she steps forward before the doors close and you DISTINCTLY can see there's a hand or other appendage against the edge of the elevator. Whoever it is was intelligent and knew enough not to step in view of the elevator camera. From what I've read from many sources, the rooftop was only accessible by card/key and usually had a security alarm that sounds when the door is opened. Whoever took her up there knew there were no security cameras and had access. Then there was a long climb up the small water tanks. The opening for the tank through which her body must have gone through was so small the police had to break the tank open to access her body. Seems like a body dump to me. She was also naked in the tank. There's a lot pointing to foul play here, and only our own interpretation of what is "bizarre" or not to point towards drug use.

She was blind, hence pressing all of the MIDDLE COLUMN buttons (out of 3 columns). She likely, in her blindness, was panicking and trying every button to get away from that floor, whatever worked. In her haste, she also pressed the most bottom button, door open. Hence the doors did not close. After she hid in the corner for awhile, she peeked out to see if the perpetrator had followed her there yet. Seems she didn't see anyone, and ducks back in the elevator. But her ducking PROBABLY ended up setting off motion sensors for the doors, resulting in the doors STILL not closing. She waits, darts out again in desperation, trying to see if the perp is closeby. She JUMPS noticeably all of a sudden, as if someone showed up. That's when she was (made?) to back into the wall outside the elevator, makes the strange odd gestures (panic? weapon pointed at her? last min attempt while wailing for her life?)... she steps away and that appendage lets go of the edge of the elevator. The rest is history. Poor girl.

If I were the cops, the first people I should already be questioning or done questioning by now are all employees of the hotel or any other parties they employ for maintenance of the hotel. It's someone who had access to the roof, knew the hotel well, and knew where security cams were.

@lu2x4ah Porrata is like John Gregozek. These LAPD detectives can't be trusted. They make a fortune pretending to know things that they know nothing about. Unless the public cries out in any loud enough way, they will blame Elisa and coverup for their laziness and incompetence. Nothing the LAPD touches can be trusted, unfortunately.

iheartmoosiq
iheartmoosiq

Regardless of what you think, look at the video at 2:28 and tell me who or what that was. Someone else was involved in the last moments of this girl's life. Murder, accident, or self perpetrated, someone else knows more about what happened.

@jurgs621 You're right.. I think it is her left heel after all. The first time I watched the clip, I didn't notice anything. Second time, thought it was someone's hand or something. Third time, realized it was likely her other foot.

capybara

she looks like she's playing hide & seek and hoping to scare someone at first.  And then that someone doesn't show up.  She looks just like my kids playing this game.  First they run and hide. When no one comes, they quickly peek and hide again, then they inch out to see, and finally they give up and stand out in plain sight.   She doesn't look at all crazy to me, just acting silly.

qqs129
qqs129

@capybara  yup, just silly acts to me. she probably was a naive and playful girl. under such situation of not being able to move the elevator, she was helpless. when she first entered the elevator, she appeared to be so normal, except she hit more than one floor buttons. I couldn't spot anything weird, but I believe it was not an accident.

ozmoses
ozmoses

@qqs129 the way she is pressing the buttons is so strange. Some speculation is that she is without her glasses so is bending over to press the buttons. It is so strange how she presses the buttons, almost looks like she's trying to enter some kind of sequential code and gives up exasperated. Someone said this takes place on the ground floor lobby. Would lobby staff have a security feature to hold the elevator and prevent intruders from going up? It could be she is arguing with lobby staff and was told she was not allowed to go up to her room intoxicated and they are locking the elevator.  She plays hide and seek with the staff and tries to 'decode' their lock on the elevator. Sounds like she's intoxicated. Maybe someone else arrives to use the elevator at that point so she gets out and begins arguing and gesturing to the staff in the lobby and is told to get away from the elevator.  At that point they release the elevator so that it closes and starts going to all the floors she pressed. Could I be right?

iheartmoosiq
iheartmoosiq

@ozmoses @qqs129 There would be no reason the staff hasn't told investigators of that happening or explained the video circumstances already by now. So, no, I don't think that's what happened.

tselliot_2000
tselliot_2000

She is hitting all the buttons because its an old hotel with the elevator floors that the elevator is on lighting up above so that if she were to go to one floor, her stalker would know which floor. By hitting all the buttons, the elevator would stop at all the floors and the stalker would not know which floor she got off on.

She is looking around because the doors won't close and she probably thinks someone on the outside is pushing the button to keep it from closing.

Where's the hallway video?
