Howard Stern Fan's Prank Call about Dorner Shootout on CBS2/KCAL 9 Newscaster

Pranked again, but was Howard Stern involved?
Who is Ronnie the Limo Driver?

The part of the country that doesn't listen to Howard Stern and his pranksters learned the answer to that question when an unidentified Stern fan tricked CBS2/KCAL 9 Los Angeles into putting him live on the air as a "spokesman" for California Department of Fish and Game.

Breaking into a report from KCAL 9 reporter Carter Evans, who was within earshot of the firefight between sheriff's deputies and Dorner but was not hit, a KCAL 9 news anchor asks "Mr. Taugher" of "Fish and Game" a series of questions about the first person to spot Dorner.

The "spokesman" then claims that Ronnie the Limo Driver shot Dorner after getting caught in a "fightout" between game wardens and Dorner on his way to a "block party," then tells the anchor, "You know, you're a real dumbass! ..."

"...You still don't know this was a prank ...?"

Then the prankster is abruptly yanked off the air.

Here's a YouTube video with excellent sound, as the prankster lures in the anchorwoman:

TMZ reported that:

The caller got through to KCBS-TV moments ago claiming to be a State Fish and Game ranger named Mike Taugher ... and he was SUPPOSED to recap the events leading up to the shootout.

It started out pretty believable ... but when the caller name-dropped Ronnie The Limo Driver (a Stern regular) it was pretty clear CBS has just been hoaxed.

But only if you listen to Howard Stern on Sirius XM Radio.

The headline has been changed to reflect that an apparent fan made the call.

Really?  WTF... "The part of the country that doesn't listen to Howard Stern" - I'm actually offended.

I live in Orange County, CA and have listened to Stern since 1989.  F U, Jill Stewart.

Howard Stern didn't prank call anybody, and it wasn't "his" prankster.  Somebody pranked and made reference.  So, he was a fan, whatever.

I just know insensitivity when I hear it. Just because someone is free to "punk" the live newscasters like the guy did doesn't mean he has to do it. I don't live in a cave so I am aware that Howard himself did not make the call.

First off, like so many have pointed out. This isn't anyone who works for Howard. Captain Janks is a superfan, and has been pulling this off for years. What it does show is that the local news media wants to be so quick to put things on live and first that they rarely(if ever) do background checks and our often wrong. So I would blame this news organization over Captain Janks prank call and especially no Howard!

Completely inappropriate!! In light of the circumstances you should be banned from being on air, on Tv, and on he phone! R u that hard up for publicity that you have to capitalize on this tragedy? Get a life!

@ValerieAnne McDonald HAHA...no, its not.  If some Jack-hole gets onto LIVE tv with the producer double, triple checking the source, its not the guy's fault, but the stations'.  Whats "inappropriate!! In light of the circumstances..."  Video surfacing with cops; "let it burn."  What's inappropriate here, instead of being this guy in, they would rather let him die.

The real headline here should be "Media once again fails to verify their story"  This only reveals that the media does not care about the accuracy of what it reports. Producers need to be fired when they erode the credibility of their news sources.

You guys judge without knowing how his show works. Howard doesn't make these prank calls to the media & neither does his staff. It's his fans who choose to do this. Real Howard fans know this. Not one of these news prank calls has ever been Howard or his staff. It's a couple super fan idiots.

I was wondering what that story was about. I caught the news just as the call was going on and got confused about what the limo driver was doing shooting. Haha.

I'd much rather hear Captain Janx go off or Joey Boots yell "Baba boey, Howard Sterns penis" than listen to the Media speculate and postulate for hours and hours because they have nothing to say...

I LOVE the LA Weekly. I come here for news, entertainment and so on. I will continue to come here for all those things but please correct your headline, Howard Stern did not make this call and no one on his staff made this call.

All the Stern haters have probably never listened to the show. The things you stereotype him for (sex, immaturity, etc) are the last things true fans listen for. The show is so much more. And again, as Jason said, he didn't make the call and neither did anyone from his show. Stern is so relevant, that Sirius XM is going to lose 10 million subscriptions when he goes off the air - he's that relevant. And Lori, I'm going to guess that you're divorced.

Is it really the purview of journalists to report their own up-to-the-minute OpEds about tragedies? Sup kettle.

Whovever made the call belongs in the same room as Howard Stern. Period.

He's laughing all the way to the bank haters. I'm a huge Howard fan. Not always do I agree with him but he truly is a smart businessman as well as an icon. And yes he is still relevant.

It was Captain Janks who made the call, he's pranked COUNTLESS news programs and talk show hosts/guests over the years. He is not a Stern staffer, just a self-described "super fan" and once frequent caller who loves to be mentioned.

Stern is a infantile ass, a has been and who cares. That he thinks this situation is funny shows what an imbecile he is.

Stern is a douchebag. His schtick was funny 20 years ago, now it's just boring.

Did Howard really make that call? If not, you guys might want to change that heading.

I don't think it was Howard because the caller wasn't very funny or making sense until he told the reporter she was being pranced. That was the best part

I listened to Howard a few times. But it seems to me his show tries to hard to be over the top. Sorry Howard nothing is shocking anymore. Thanks to people like you. Enjoy satellite.

Love Howard. But I heard the prank on-air live, and it wasn't funny -- just stupid. The broadcaster who took the call was struggling to figure out what was going on with the situation on the ground at the time, so the gag's timing was really uncool. Save the pranks for those who really deserve them -- celebs and politicians.

Jason Martinez
Jason Martinez

You guys are idiots. It's not Howard Stern at the article claims. It's one of his superfans. He doesn't ask them to do it. They have made a name for themselves for doing it and playing them for Howard. Other than the ridiculousness of the call the other reason he plays the calls is to point out how quick today's media is to get the scoop before anyone else that they fail to fact check and search the backgrounds and validity of their sources. Similar to how LA weekly is speculating that Howard Stern is responsible for this.

Howard Stern's radio show has a hardcore base of fans that listen, and his Sirus deal probably is more lucrative, but his radio show is no longer part of the radio culture in LA. Very few people know the inane cast of characters that are part of his Sirus Circus.

I heard that interview. The reasons I have always hated Howard Stern is because of his total insensitivity...no...ignorance and disregard for the people in harms way. Gather all his groupies together and have a blast, fine, but not at the expense of the rest of us.

I'm pretty sure Howard didn't make the call. Other people who listen to the shows make the calls and Howard's staff chooses which go on the air. True, Howard often has final say over what goes out on air but not always.

Makes for great radio. And exposing the ineptness of the sensationalist hungry media. The world doesn't stop turning every time a crisis erupts. And get over yourself LA Weekly. Am so sick of hipsters imaginary moral high ground.
