'No Kill' Goal Elusive For L.A., But Fewer Pets Put To Death in 2013

Los Angeles isn't a so-called "no kill" city when it comes to unwanted pets that end up in public shelters.

But it's getting closer, says the group Best Friends Animal Society.

The organization boasted this week that far fewer public shelter animals were killed in January compared to one year ago:

The numbers, based on city of L.A. Animal Services data, show that 227 fewer animals were killed last month compared to January, 2012, the group says.

The stats are even better when January, 2011 is considered: There were 324 fewer pets put to death last month compared to then.

Best Friends Animal Society says its immediate goal is to see that 9 out of 10 pets that end up in city shelters go to new owners instead of to the canine morgue.

City Animal Services general manager Brenda Barnette says the latest numbers are "reflective of the continuing great effort between private animal rescue groups and L.A. Animal Services."

Last year the City Council voted to ban retail dog and cat sales in L.A., a move that would force pet stores to push for adoptions from shelters and rescue groups.

Francis Battista, co-founder of the society:

We are exceeding our goals, but there is still much to be done.

I don't understand how anyone can possibly answer "no" to this question.

...I have taken my own advice for 2 decades and have seen dramatic, positive changes: population reduction, healthy pets and strays, clean neighborhoods. Everyone can do something to help take us out of the dark ages. Stop the barbarism and apathy. Let's stop paying for the extermination of healthy cats and dogs with our tax dollars. It all starts in your own backyard.

There are things we can all do to make LA no-kill: Spay and neuter all pets (by law), keep pets safe and secure, trap-neuter-return feral cats, and adopt - don't buy - pets.

They're just damm dogs (and cats) people! Get over it! There are so many of em'! They're are so many of em' that they're breaking the city and county financially! Do you want to pay for all of em'?! Then you take em' all home! You all act like they're going to go extinct! You want a, "No Kill"?! Then try putting all your damm energy into a, "No Kill" for endangered species! Hawks, Polar Bears, and Tigers need help too! Here's a good one for you all! Try putting all of your damm, "No Kill" energy into protecting the dolphins and whales! You know we live by the sea! Try supporting a boycott of Japan for hosting a future Olympic Games untill they stop killing dolphins and whales! Have any of you people seen the way those slant-eyed motherfuckers kill and slaughter dolphins?! It's very horriffic dispicable! Maybe this video will show you how good dogs and cats have it! http://youtu.be/uzuSULcqgxQ

@Oldschool RockerNo, they're not just damm dogs (and cats)! These are living beings that learn, think, feel, and solve problems. They are NOT disposable!!! Furthermore, many of us who work to save dogs and cats also put a lot of energy in to saving endangered species. I'm really disgusted by your comments and hope that you someday face the same fate so that you know what these animals face.

They would just end up sending animals outside of city limits
