Roger Mahony Heads To Rome For Pope Vote Despite D.A. Priest Abuse Review

Categories: WTF

If you thought Roger Mahony being stripped of his "duties" was a cop out intended to make you think the church was doing something regarding past priest abuse and the Cardinal's strategy to transfer bad clergy away from the prying eyes of the law, you're probably right.

It was a mild, public slap in the face (and Mahony responded by slapping back, if you'll recall). Now the disgraced former leader of the L.A. Archdiocese is rubbing it in your face:

He gets to go to Rome and vote on the next pope. Yep, he even blogged about the honor today.

Stripped of administrative and public duties? Doody.

Today he gave a shout out to retiring Pope Pope Benedict XVI Mahony and notes he had a say in his crowning (or whatever they call it):

It was my privilege to participate in the Conclave of April 2005 when Pope Benedict was elected.

At the bottom of his blog post, Mahony hits you with the gold-ring hand:

I look forward to traveling to Rome soon to help thank Pope Benedict XVI for his gifted service to the Church, and to participate in the Conclave to elect his successor.

Going to Rome? After church documents show he essentially strategized to hide priests accused of unspeakable sex acts against children? After the L.A. District Attorney's office said it would review the church's files to see if there might be a case against certain church officials?

Heading to Italy? Wouldn't law enforcement officials be concerned that during a D.A. criminal review Mahony is leaving the country?

Just sayin.'

Most of the criticisms about Cardinal Mahony and (then) Msgr. Thomas Curry state that they

played some sort of "shell" game in transferring priests, and in being negligent of the victims who

were abused by priests.  They have admitted to errors, apologized, sought to redress wrongs,  and

went through a learning curve.  The catholic church as an institution has no more and perhaps less

sexual abuse than other denominations and/or public institutions.  That a person makes a decision within the limits of the law does not always mean that the person is wishing to evade the law completely.  (for example, in the secular world the director Roman Polanski faces charges of child abuse: he has been warned that if he sets foot on U.S. soil he is liable to arrest).  That priests discuss ramifications of the law in their personal memos  and consequences of actions taken

does not always mean that they are obligated to seek  maximum consequences, provided that they act within the law.  The law is a two edged sword, it can cut both ways.  In many instances, the forest of lawful protections have been cut down to expose the catholic archdiocese of los Angeles

with more prejudice that other institutions, which begs the question : if cutting away legal precedent in pursuit of Mahony/Curry then--what law will be left standing ? or is it arbitrary in the catholic church's case?  That is why perhaps both Cardinal Mahony and Bishop Thomas Curry walk this earth free men, albeit under scrutiny.  Indeed, some say that when a priest molests, or commits any crime for that matter, why is it that the Bishop and the" leader of the corporation sole"

(the archbishop of an archdiocese) be held to act like an investigative agency, police force, arresting agencies and experts in that particular crime?  I think it is a question worth asking.  After all, if a penitent in the confessional box tells a priest that he committed some act--say robbery, adultery,

would we demand that a policeman be an expert in matters of the Church and the correct penitence

administered?  As long as there is separation between Church and State the lines are not always clear.  Neverthess, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles now has guidelines and procedures that are

strict.  The author of this note here suffered sexual abuse as a child--not by a priest, but by a representative of a South American nation with diplomatic immunity.  I have sought to go on with my life, not dwelling on the past, but with a healthy respect for the power of justice tinged with mercy.  (I availed myself of  a church sponsored group that helped those molested in their

youth to go on with their lives independent and free from further feelings of somehow being

victimized by the abusive acts of others ).  If I should meet my abuser on the "other side" one

day, I shall hold my  head up high, look him in the eye, and  say "I'm glad you made it to heaven,we

are all in need of mercy."

Catholic Church Torture case in U.S. Supreme Court

Catholic torture of a political activist now before U.S. high court. Huminski v. Mercy Gilbert Mecical Center. Court papers reveal an unholy alliance between Sheriff Joseph Arpaio, Federal Judge Frederick Martone (both life-long Catholics) and a Catholic Church hospital network, Dignity Health, and their efforts to silence a critic of the racist sheriff with an attempted murder and torture at a Catholic hospital, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Gilbert, Arizona.

Court papers are at,

http://www.scribd.com/doc/122839590/Catholic-Church-Supreme-Court-Torture-Case

Filing in the U.S. Supreme Court of a case, according to undisputed court papers, of torture of a critic of life-long Catholic Sheriff Joe Arpaio by the Catholic Church affiliated hospital network, Dignity Health. Undisputed allegations in court papers allege forced drugging, forced nudity, forced unnatural restraint, conduct akin to water-boarding, forced irradiation and assault & battery. Life-long catholic federal judge Frederick J. Martone, U.S. District Judge (Arizona), refused to enjoin the torture and dismissed the case. According to court papers, the video surveillance data at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center in Gilbert Arizona that captured the events was destroyed by the Catholic Church. Court papers allege a pattern and custom of conduct by the Catholic Church and Dignity Health to cover-up criminal conduct in a manner consistent with the church's handling of child sex abuse cases.

Boo on the catholic church and all those child molestors. Disgusting. Let the freaking priests have sex and we won't have this problem. It's all so stupid.

Yes, I know Jeffrey. But a very loaded question. How about a more objective "How do you feel about ...?" And btw I'm an atheist, not a Catholic church apologist.

For 20 years files on sexual abusers and their known victims lay on the desk of Joey Ratzinger and little Joe never once gave the abused a penny postcard as to how we were doing. If the Cardinals can elect a pope, the people in the pews should be deciding their own church's future. Not the enablers and conspiritors in crime.

Yes, being barred from public and administrative duties in the Archdiocese would seemingly render him less than suitable.

Unless and until he is convicted of some crime (which he may be *if* he protected other criminals), then why not?

sutton.david15

@Eric Bacon Schenkelberg Agree--unless and until he is convicted of a crime than

he has the same rights as anyone under the law.  That prosecutors can't make any crime "stick" to him means even his most severest critics can't come up  with accusations that pass the legal litmus test.  Therefore the people in the galleries--or in the grandstands--are trying him in the court of public opinion--which is their right but does not pass legal muster.  There is a lot of conjecture as to his motivations--in many instances he is reading memos and we don't really know if the opinions voiced in the memos are in themselves definitive or providing  information and scenarios.  His Eminence Cardinal

Mahony has admitted mistakes, and has said that he underwent a learning curve; he

has apoligized for his errors and has sought redress: he has every right to carry out his official duties as Cardinal and he is carrying on with his life in the here and now, which

is realistic.  By the way, he himself could be elected pope! but that is another matter!

I don't see how he has any right to help choose our next pope. Talk about injustice!

Pope Benedict made several apologies to victims who were sexually abused by clerics within the Catholic church. Yet to this day, he has taken no decisive actions to punish any high ranking church official for enabling, empowering, and covering up sex crimes against innocent kids.
He should have fired Cardinal Mahony, for his horrific cover up of sex crimes within LA archdiocese, yet Mahony is still a cardinal and now he can vote for a new pope. This is extremely disturbing.

Thankfully the LAPD is getting involved. It is time for law enforcement to investigate these sex crimes against kids, and to investigate those who shield and cover up these crimes. Until high ranking church officials spend some time behind bars, nothing will change within this secret archaic institution. As long as they can still get away with it, they have no reason to stop.

Children are safest when child predators and those who enable and conceal their crimes are held responsible.
