4 a.m. Last Call For Alcohol Proposed For Calif. Clubs By Sen. Mark Leno

Young tourists seeking a taste of Los Angeles nightlife are almost always in for a bitter pill.

Expecting Hollywood glamour and all-night partying on a world-class level, revelers from out of town are more likely to get kicked to the curb at 2 a.m. because of California's strict alcohol laws.

It's embarrassing. State Sen. Mark Leno today announced that he has introduced legislation that would change our party pooper ways:

He wants to allow local governments to extend drinking hours until 4 a.m. Woot-woot?

Leno:

This legislation would allow destination cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego to start local conversations about the possibility of expanding nightlife and the benefits it could provide the community by boosting jobs, tourism and local tax revenue.

His bill, SB 635, would allow only nightclubs and restaurants to go until 4 a.m. (Stores that sell alcohol would still be subject to earlier hours).

Leno's office says it would help bring California nightlife in line with that of such after-hours beacons as Las Vegas, New York, Chicago and Miami.

The legislation is supported by the California Restaurant Association.

Some have argued that having all the drunk people leave bars at 2 a.m. puts pressure on communities and police, and that later closing times might actually spread the burden and allow some to sober up if they so chose.

Matt Gray, executive director of Taxpayers for Improving Public Safety:

Uniform closing times put significant stress on public transportation systems and the law enforcement agencies tasked with managing and dispersing large crowds of patrons when they all leave the clubs at 2 a.m.

But the big argument here is money. Lots of it. Leno's office notes that nightlife in California is worth billions and that we're home to 1 out of every 4 top-grossing nightlife venues in the nation.

However, the top 10 venues are in late-night-serving cities like New York, Vegas and Miami. Leno:

Many cities in California have dynamic social activities that are vital to their economies, but they lack the flexibility to expand their businesses.

Are you for this? (We know you are).

Stop the booze at 2 AM, but let the bars stay open until 4 AM.  Extending the drinking hours guarantees that when people leave the bars, they will be more drunk and two hours more tired. Driving while tired and sober can be as dangerous as drunk driving.  Thus increasing the number of very drunk, very tired drivers is reckless.

Two hours with no booze between 2 and 4 would result in a considerable number of people going home in a more sober condition that when they must leave at 2:00 A.M.

Subways are no answer in LA.  Even if the bar sits on top of a subway station, the subway system serves only 5% of the city.  That means for 95% of the residents, the subway is useless.

2AM just makes people drink faster, sooner. Drinks for the road!

Extending last call may help greatly in a cultural sense, more than it may harm other aspects.

Great, then the drunks will mix in when traffic is just starting to get heavy, making the morning commute for millions all that more dangerous. I will put money on the my speculation that fatal traffic collisions in the morning will increase, and for what: so that a few trendy nightclubs can squeeze a few more bucks.

24h BART access and no alcohol curfew would make the Bay Area way more fun, and profitable.

2 is just fine. Look at it this way, if you are at a bar or club past 2am, you aren't getting laid. Go home, call a cab so there are no drunk drivers and try again the next night.

It used to be until 3AM and then they changed it in the late 90s. Nothing new.

4 am is a good time (you CAN end your night earlier than that, of course), and a lot of public transportation routes are just getting started in the 4th hour (others start in the 5th hour). Plus taxis are available 24-7. Of course, I'm also amenable to 24 hour bars, too. :D

People in LA can't even handle 2am what make you think they will survive 4am lol. It just means more drunken chaos. The buses and metro rail would have to extend their hours of operation too. Wouldn't want these idiots out driving drunk.
