In the Los Angeles City Council District 11 race, frontrunner Mike Bonin, the longtime chief of staff to outgoing District 11 Councilman Bill Rosendahl, is expected to win big. But just how big? Will he grab more than 50 percent tonight and avoid a May runoff?

With more than 30 percent of precincts reporting, Bonin continues to run away with the race with 10,007 votes or 60.43 percent. Rivals Tina Hess has 3,238 votes or 19.55 percent, Fred Sutton has 1,926 votes or 11.63 percent, and Odysseus Bostick has 1,388 votes or 8.38 percent.

When Rosendahl announced that he was not running for another four-year term, Bonin quickly jumped into the CD 11 race and grabbed numerous major endorsements from politicians, neighborhood groups, and labor unions.

He also raised $357,000, far outpacing his rivals Odysseus Bostick, Fred Sutton, and Tina Hess. None of them raised anywhere near $100,000.

Bonin is one of several gay candidates across Los Angeles who has made a solid showing. Others include L.A. City Controller candidate Ron Galperin and L.A. Council District 13 candidate Mitch O'Farrell. Underdog mayoral candidate Kevin James is also gay.

All you talk about here is percentage of votes, campaign money and gayness. Would it be so hard to tell your readers something about what makes these candidates distinctive? What is their experience? Anything they stand for? You could have been writing about any race in any district and your readers walk away knowing nothing more than statistics. If you dug just a tiny bit deeper, you'd show everyone that there's one one of these candidates with the background and experience to adequately represent CD 11, and he's the one who won. We need major representation from someone who knows the ropes and the process, who can carry some weight, and who's willing to stand up for his constituents. Mike Bonin has that experience and background as well as the fire in his belly. You make it sound like money and gayness won him votes. The neighborhood activists gave great impetus to his campaign, because we are the ones who know that a cute face or flashy campaign flyers won't get us diddly Downtown. Please throw in a bit of substance. We need all the help we can get educating the uninformed public about LA's political process and the players involved.
