In the Los Angeles City Council District 9 race, Latina candidate Ana Cubas is hoping to grab one of the top two slots in a field of mostly men -- and then head to the May runoff.

Cuba is facing African American politicos Curren Price, Mike Davis, and David Roberts as well as Asian American and LAPD deputy chief Terry Hara.

As of now, Price is leading with 668 votes or 26 percent, Cubas has 559 votes or 22 percent, Davis has 485 votes or 19 percent, Roberts has 345 votes or 13 percent, and Hara has 338 votes or 13 percent.

Cubas is certainly an underdog in the race, with Price receiving major financial backing by labor unions. Roberts grabbed a Los Angeles Times endorsement, while Hara has raised $235,000.

District 9 is another coveted City Council seat, which covers part of downtown Los Angeles. The council member will have tight connections to deep-pocketed downtown business interests, helping one's political future.

Current District 9 Councilwoman Jan Perry, who will be termed out, is running for mayor.

Along with the CD 13 race, District 9 is expected to be a nail-biter.
