L.A.'s 1984 Olympics via the IOC
We've done it twice, we can do it again.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today said he put our hat in the ring for the 2024 Olympics. "I am pleased to confirm our enthusiastic interest in bidding to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games," he wrote to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The bid to host the games is being endorsed by ...

... Magic Johnson, Tom Hanks, Anschutz Entertainment Group's Tim Leiweke, Disney chief Robert Iger and the L.A. Chamber of Commerce, among others.

Villaraigosa:

We are proud of our city's sports heritage and tradition and we stand ready to work with you to bring the Olympic games back to the United States.

The mayor notes in the letter that L.A. that there's already a 2024 Strategy Team under the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, which is chaired by Barry Sanders of L.A. Coliseum Commission fame.

You ready for this?

Yes, but only if they keep it in "The (SanFer of course) Valley" with all the ensuing traffic. They talk/act like (SNL's) The Californians anyway.. "let them lose their souls," as Danny 5-Angels/Pentangeli said in "The Godfather." J/k

LA can't afford the Olympics.... given the prices in the city, there wouldn't be a large enough turnout to make them profitable. More debt is just what the city needs....

The 1984 LA Olympics was truly a miracle - Decreased traffic and air pollution (without any rail projects in place) and the Olympic Committee finished in the black thanks to the excellent no nonsense management of Peter Ueberroth who made the cover of Time Magazine's "Man of the Year"

It was planned like clockwork and deliveries for larger private and government operations were shifted to the evening taking many big rigs off the freeways and highways.

Just get Farmer's Field fucking going already! Super Bowl, World Cup, Olympics are sure to follow once it's built.

It should be in LA it might give the city the balls to retrofit the coliseum it needs a update. Use staples, etc.

If they truly want the bid, they need to focus less on "hollywood" and more on a better approach. The 2016 bid was horribly executed. It needs to have more of a home-like approach, like the arts or something in those lines.

LA going bankrupt within a decade from now will prevent it from happening.

Don't do it. Im from Toronto but I know Montreal took 20 years to pay off their games. Love La weekly. There often.

It will probably cost the city more. The trickle down economy argument is bull crap, because the business will keep the money while finding ways to dodge taxes, while the citizens of LA pays for the actual cost.

Sure! We kicked butt in 1984. We did it before and we can do it again. This time, however, don't pass up the Valley for venues, dammit.

Well, on one hand, I don't watch the olympics. On the other hand, it'll probably force them to actually fix the roads...so hopefully they get the olympics here in LA...so the shitty roads will maybe be fixed.

Yep. Especially because I won't be living here then. It's going to be a mess.

Oh, sure. And all those who have been laid off when their jobs have been contracted out can work as concession workers.
