Marijuana Lingers For A Month; Zero-Tolerance DUI Would Ensnare 'Sober' Med Patients

Categories: Marijuana

There have been a few attempts to establish zero-tolerance DUI limits for weed smokers who get behind the wheel. The latest proposal by state Sen. Lou Correa would give you a DUI even if you had a trace of pot in your system.

The problem with that is virtually all regular medical marijuana patients would be subject to DUIs, because pot stays with your for weeks even if you're otherwise sober. That much was laid out ...

... in a recent study published in the journal Clinical Chemistry.

The research looked at 30 men who smoked weed daily. Despite cutting off the marijuana, two out of five remained positive for THC tests as many as 30 days after lighting up, according to author Marilyn A. Huestis of the National Institutes of Health.

According to a summary:

These results demonstrate, for the first time, that cannabinoids can be detected in blood of chronic daily cannabis smokers during a month of sustained abstinence.

This would make being a medical pot patient and a driver difficult if a zero-tolerance DUI law was passed in California.

The author, however, is all for cracking down on dope drivers, even if they haven't smoked in a month. The summary says the research ...

... suggests that establishment of 'per se' THC legislation might achieve a reduction in motor vehicle injuries and deaths. This same type of 'per se' alcohol legislation improved prosecution of drunk drivers and dramatically reduced alcohol-related deaths.

In 1972 a Presidential commission's report recommends that marijuana be legalized. The Commission concluded that marijuana users "are essentially indistinguishable from their non-marijuana using peers by any fundamental criterion other than their marijuana use." They found that, "Neither the marijuana user nor the drug itself can be said to constitute a danger to public safety." The Commission recommended "Decriminalization of possession of marijuana for personal use on both the state and federal levels."
Dick Nixon condemned the report, and threw it in the trash. He needed tools to harass the war demonstrators and keep the militant black man down.

Nixon's Treason

In late October 1968, Beverly Deepe, a 33-year-old Saigon correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor, came upon a story that could have changed history. A six-year veteran covering the Vietnam War, she learned from South Vietnamese sources that Richard Nixon’s campaign was collaborating behind the scenes with the Saigon government to derail President Lyndon Johnson’s peace talks.

@grayzip  If you had a single brain cell in your head you would probably explode......marijuana has extreme healing powers and can even cure cancer and has been proven recently in several studies...... Inform yourself before you make a bilithering fool of yourself.....

@grayzip You are a misinformed idiot. My father is dying of ALS and cannabis helps reduce saliva (which could choke him to death) without the terrible side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and it also helps him sleep and keeps away some of the anxiety of the disease. Learn before you talk, and remember that weed is far safer than alcohol (as all studies have proven) and it was made illegal for racist reasons (to get rid of mexicans, many of whom were poor farmers who grew weed), due to the power of the alcohol industry (and more recently due to the pharmaceutical industry as well), and also because Harry Anslinger (who was losing influence after the end of prohibition) wanted to gain power so he started the propaganda and war against marijuana as a way to make himself important/powerful again (which worked with the help of people like William Randolph Hearst). You obviously knew none of that history nor the actual affects of cannabis. Please refrain from making comments until you are informed (likely never with someone as stupid as you).

@Information @grayzip If your father has a terminal illness then alright, I don't agree and have not seen any serious study that would say Cannabis is safer in any way to alcohol, nothing that is inhaled or smoked is, in the other hand Cannabis take to 100% terrible addiction and is a tragedy well documented in desintoxication clinics around the world. Cannabis is a powerful drug and there is no reason whatsoever why a normal person with some slight problem would need it and never mind for long time.

Cannabis also is produced today in many industrial ways and some types equals or surpass chemically 20 cigarettes per spliff making it a very sure way of damage your health fast, deep and permanently being also a very secure way of dying of Cancer.

Is 21st Century, there is no place for the dreams and the lies of the 60s, I know many people who can drink a beer once a month and go home, I have never met in 20 years a weed smoker able to do that at all.

In 5 years most of weed smokers do so everyday and many of them all day, loosing their families, houses, health, jobs and the life as they knew it.

Smoking weed and have a "great, normal life" never has been seen, you can be in denial all you want, still facts are the same and not backed up for some bizarre "studies" but for 50 years of solid, consistent and Universal statistics.

In any case, if you smoked weed, don't drive, you can do whatever you want with your life but don't put our lives and our children's in peril just for fun.

"Smoking weed and have a "great, normal life" never has been seen,"

Many extra ordinary people smoked weed like Carl Sagan, Michael Phelps, Willie Nelson and Louis Armstrong. I would say these people live great lives as do many "normal" people who choose to smoke marijuana recreationally.

Marijuana has the lowest addiction rate of any drug. A recent study by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science found these rates...

"32 percent of people who try tobacco become dependent, as do 23 percent of those who try heroin, 17 percent who try cocaine, 15 percent who try alcohol and 9 percent who try marijuana"

The assertion that smoking weed...

"In 5 years most of weed smokers do so everyday and many of them all day, loosing their families, houses, health, jobs and the life as they knew it."

is just wrong. Sure if you are an airplane pilot smoking weed could seriously affect your career but apparently doing crafts, art,  sports and astrophysics can be done extremely successfully.

@sasfa @Information @grayzip  How does it feel to be so pathetically ignorant and a tool of false propaganda.  Almost everything you said was wrong and just plain stupid..... You probably have never smoked a joint in your life and have no experience.  I for one cured myself of Hep C...and survived a liver transplant due to marijuana.......  And if you bothered to inform yourself you would see that there are some very important studies out of Switzerland that shows cannabinoids killing cancer cells....  So, I suppose you are one of those Tea Bagger constitutionalist who cry all day about the rights to own assault rifles and bla bla bla........ nothing but a hypocrite.....

@Jesse Bluma    First of all....marijuana is not a drug.....its an herb......second of all it is liberating if you were such not  a fool and experience some....... better and safer than your alcohol......but you probably don't even drink judging from you cookie party on your link..... and third it has extreme healing powers..... and that is the reason the pharmaceuticals don't want it available...... pot treats many many problems......from gaucomma to alshiemers.....

This is really a scare tactic... The keyword is IMPAIRMENT - and if cops cannot say "BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT" dude is impaired at the time of stop/accident...Case dismissed.  This is a matter of established law and case law that goes back decades. There are many things that can cause impairment and they cannot have a different standard for pot.
