Updated at the bottom: He says he didn't do it. First posted at 7:01 a.m.

Peter Murphy, the "Godfather of Goth" and the vocalist for legendary group Bauhaus, was in jail this week after he was arrested based on an alleged felony in Glendale, according to L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate data.

The musician, who was apparently set to launch "The Mr. Moonlight Tour Celebrating 35 Years of Bauhaus," allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in Glendale before being boxed in by a motorist and arrested on suspicion of causing injury while DUI, felony hit-and-run and possession of meth, reports the Glendale News-Press:

Murphy, 55, was arrested by Glendale cops Saturday at 3:20 p.m. and remained behind bars in lieu of $500,000, according to sheriff's inmate data.

He was due in court in Glendale at 9 a.m. today.

The News-Press says police allege his Saturday morning went something like this:

-A motorist in a Mercedes was rear-ended at Central and Goode avenues about 11:48 a.m.

-L.A. police responded and held the suspect for Glendale cops.

-Murphy denied drinking and said he was jet-lagged and had taken pills for depression, according to what cops told the paper.

-Cops said that they found a bag of meth and that Murphy might have been trying to discard it in the back of an LAPD cruiser near the Universal City scene.

Murphy, a Brit who moved to Turkey, says on his website that his upcoming tour would feature him "performing only Bauhaus material."

[Update at 4:05 p.m.]: The News-Press dutifully followed this story into the courtroom and reports that Murphy today pleaded not guilty.

The judge let him go until the next court date on the matter with the caveat that he not drive without the court's permission.

Other than the very regrettable hit and run, his blood alcohol level was .001. The "meth" charge will never hold. He was released without bail on his own recognizance. Chalk up another win for the LAPD.

Is every news outlet utterly incapable of mentioning the fact that Murphy has primarily been a solo artist for the last 30 freakin' years? Geez, I love Bauhaus, too, but no one even mentions "Cuts You Up."
