Peter Murphy, the legendary Bauhaus vocalist arrested over the weekend on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run and meth possession, had barely a trace of alcohol in his system, his handlers say.

Which begs the question: What then, was he allegedly on? Because a witness was so terrified over the Brit's driving in and near Glendale Saturday morning that he tailed him and boxed him in before cops could take over.

Murphy's handlers said this on his Facebook page this week:

All charges that were originally filled as felonies were lowered to misdemeanours and Peter was released with with no bail or restrictions.

Even on the lower charges Peter has pleaded not guilty.

Cops said the goth pioneer was behind the wheel of a Subaru Forester that rear-ended a Mercedes before Murphy allegedly drove off about 11:48 a.m. Saturday in Glendale.

Authorities alleged that, once in the back of a patrol car, he tried to discard a bag of meth.

DUI can involve substances other than booze. But his handlers are playing up the singer;s lack of blood-alcohol content, stating:

The amount of Alcohol in Peters Bloodstream was measured at 0.01 way under the 0.08 which is legal. This is the lowest amount of alcohol that is able to register on a breathalyser.

Most importantly, Murphy's people say he'll hit the road for a tour in which he's scheduled to be "performing only Bauhaus material" next month as scheduled:

Brits are boozers and users. Well-known fact ...

Don't do absinthe and get behind the wheel of a Forester in Glendale!

Tweeker. He probably fell asleep at the wheel, or his mind wasn't focused on driving. Hit-and-run anywhere will get you in trouble if you're caught. Glendale isn't the issue.

Barely any trace of alcohol ... yet on prescription meds & meth. Regardless, he was still guilty of being under the influence of drugs. Duh!
