First, we blasted our Hollywood and record industry entertainment across the nation. Then our Mexicans went to exotic places like North Carolina to work the tobacco fields. Now L.A. is shipping its pets to far-off American destinations.

Why? Because we're idiots:

A cat that had its snout and paws covered in red tape was having trouble breathing when it was abandoned at an L.A. area animal shelter today. (See a disturbing photo of the cat bound up after the jump).

Vets from the county's Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control quickly got the tape off,but officials are still astonished at the level of cruelty displayed by the animal's tormentor(s):

Labor and animal rights activists joined hands to fight a proposal that would leave cats and dogs home alone overnight at L.A. city shelters.

The proposal to end overnight supervision by animal care technicians was much-needed in the face of budget woes, said Los Angeles Animal Services general manager Brenda Barnett. But then she backed off in the face of opposition:

Busy day for rescues by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

And not a one of them, at least among the incidents publicized by the LAFD, involved a human in need of help. Nope, first the department revived a pair of cats following a fire, then they rescued a dog who had been stranded on the side of a Hollywood Hills cliff for nearly three days:

Updated at the bottom with a statement from Kmart and an assertion that PETA got it wrong. First posted at 7:09 a.m.

An independent investigation has been launched into the death of a shark that was being used for the filming of a Kmart commercial in Van Nuys, the American Human Association tells the Weekly.

PETA first revealed the death this week after whistle blowers let it know that the whitetip shark died in what AHA says was an above-ground, 60,000-gallon tank in Van Nuys that was set up as part of the commercial shoot.

PETA says the shark was flown in from New York ...

Los Angeles isn't a so-called "no kill" city when it comes to unwanted pets that end up in public shelters.

But it's getting closer, says the group Best Friends Animal Society.

The organization boasted this week that far fewer public shelter animals were killed in January compared to one year ago:

An animal rights group says it rescued 15 dogs from a Palm Springs home where unsanitary conditions and close quarters added up to a hard-luck life for the pooches. (See video of the rescue after the jump).

Philly The Dog Rescued By LAPD Cops; Funds Needed For Vet Bill

It always makes our eyes roll when a Beverly Hills debutante mentions her side career in dog rescuing, which is usually a much more self-congratulatory way of saying you paid too much for a used dog (shots and all that), usually one with breeding. Rarely do these "rescues" seem to involve Eastside Rottweilers or the South L.A. pound.

But what three LAPD officers did recently, now that's a rescue. Listen up:

The Humane Society is sounding triumphant today because, it says, 80 L.A.-area pet stores have signed a pledge to stop selling puppies. (The concern among animal-rights activists has long been that retail pooches come from inhumane puppy mills.)

The thing is, selling puppies at retail stores has already been outlawed in the core of L.A. -- in the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.

That didn't stop the Society, however, from ...

Elephants in traveling shows could join condoms and plastic bags in the list of things L.A. wants to ban.
Within the next six months, you will no longer be able to buy a pet from a pet store in Los Angeles. You won't be able to shoot a porn without the actors sheathing up. And plastic bags? The city council has banned those too.

So what's next?

Elephants. Specifically, circuses with elephants.

Spurred by the Los Angeles-based Animal Defenders International, or ADI, the L.A. City Council's Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee voted Tuesday to send the full Council legislation banning the use of elephants in traveling shows and exhibits that stop within city limits.

That's right, turkey abuse is a thing now. Is anything sacred?
