Corrected at the bottom: Turns out he was only half-naked. Headline has changed.

Getting naked is always a great way to kick of the weekend. But not if you do it in public.

A man climbed an eight-story electrical tower in North Hollywood today and stood off with officers for nearly four hours before they got him to come down, police said:

Los Angeles is a vast city, nearly 500 square miles worth, on the edge of the sea and nestled against a national forest that could swallow some states.

Strangely, however, when it comes to parks, we might as well be New York or Boston. Scratch that: When it comes to parks, New York, Boston. and dozens of other cities outrank L.A. by far, according to the latest ParkScore index:

Los Angeles is America's City of Cars, the town built around four-wheeled transportation, the birthplace of custom-auto culture and couture.

But what if our traffic were so bad that it actually encouraged some of you to walk, bike and take the train? That just might be the case as L.A. has ranked as one of the top 10 "Best Cities to Live Practically Car Free." Really:

Updated at the bottom with the billboard taken down. First posted at 12:27 p.m.

It's been a bad year so far for JC Penney. It had a CEO, Ron Johnson, who worked as a top executive at ultra-cool Apple, Inc. But he didn't get this kind of retail and proceeded to alienate the chain's customers by eliminating sales and downsizing the number of brands the stores carried.

Then came an apology commercial (and Johnson's ouster). Now comes Hitler:

Robert Colt Wilson Had Bombs, Meth & Gun In Westside Case, Prosecutors Say

You know what we really need more than a man with 16 or so pipe bombs in his Westside apartment? A man with 16 bombs, an explosive device in his car, a gun and meth.

Because we want people with destructive materials to be extremely edgy and violent. We kid, of course, but the allegations against Robert Colt Wilson, 29, are serious and chilling:

Among our many fine distinctions -- smog capital, traffic capital, douche capital -- is a new one:

The U.S. Postal Service this week ranked Los Angeles No. 1 among big cities where carriers are attacked by dogs. The USPS released the list of top dog-attack cities, based on the number of incidents, as part of the upcoming National Dog Bite Prevention Week. Grrrr:

When a 15-year-old girl died from a drug overdose after she attended Electric Daisy Carnival at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 2010, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was quick to question whether raves should be even be allowed at such a publicly owned venue.

Steve Aoki, along with will.i.am and other DJ luminaries, performed at that event. And last night Aoki was at the side of the man who wants to fill Villaraigosa's City Hall shoes:

Rendition of Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' Diverts LAX Flight (VIDEO)

If you sang Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" on a shrill, nonstop loop during a flight from LAX to New York we'd beg for an emergency landing and then dial up the nearest SWAT team.

Fortunately for this crooner, the weekend flight was merely diverted to Kansas City, where the woman in question was apparently detained by Kansas City International Airport Police:

Law To Stop L.A.'s Broken-Meter Parking Tickets Moves Forward

The city of Los Angeles always seems to find creative ways to tax that ass, from $234 moving violations to broken-meter parking tickets.

An area state Assemblyman, Mike Gatto, is working to block the city from issuing the latter. Previous state legislation outlawed broken-meter tickets, but it allowed cities to opt out of the rule, and the L.A. City Council did just that. So, yes, you can get a ticket for parking at a broken meter in Los Angeles. Gatto's bill, AB 61, confronts that head-on:

Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild fame has been accused of hitting girls in the past. But this time the charges stuck.

The L.A. City Attorney's office triumphantly stated that Francis was convicted by a jury today of "three counts of false imprisonment, one count of dissuading a witness from reporting, and one count of assault causing great bodily injury":

49 'Assault Weapons' Turned In During LAPD Gun Buyback

The gun debate in this country can probably be defined by two kinds of people: Those who think having fewer assault-type weapons around means safer streets, and those who think such a thing would be detract from the fight against criminals. (Because bad guys get ripped to pieces by legit homeowners with assault weapons all the time).

City Hall and the LAPD seem to agree with the former concept. Today they announced a weekend gun buyback program netted ...

Southern California's Scripps Ranch is one of the wealthiest communities in the nation (median income: $144,438 -- much higher than Beverly Hills'). At 71 percent Anglo, it's also one of the whitest 'hoods this side of the Santa Clarita Valley.

So it was a little surprising to us to see an awesome video (after the jump) of mostly white girls from the local high school twerking their asses off, yoga-pants-covered bottoms in the air like they just don't care. The San Diego Unified School District also was surprised:

Eastside vs. Westside: 5 Ways of Looking At It

Categories: Crazytown

What you think of as the Eastside or the Westside of Los Angeles might not necessarily be the same as others: Latinos, African Americans, gangs, history and the actual map all have different perspectives on where the Westside ends and the Eastside begins.

Indeed, few crosstown rivalries involve such ingrained (and often wrong-headed) notions as L.A.'s Eastside-Westside divide. It's as if self-proclaimed Eastsiders are from Venus and Westsiders are from Mars.

Here's a way to look at the Eastside and Westside through different lenses (filtered, of course, through our own biases):

We've witnessed people come to Los Angeles from the U.K., the Midwest and all over Asia only to declare they've found true paradise.

What's not to like? We've got the beaches. We've got the red carpets. And we've got the pretty people.

But for many, L.A. will always be Hell A, as some folks in San Diego call it:
