Despite questionable data, the Los Angeles Police Commission approved a controversial LAPD report about the city's hit-and-run crisis on Tuesday.

The study now heads to the L.A. City Council's public safety committee, where Councilman Joe Buscaino will decide if LAPD Chief Charlie Beck is doing everything he can to curtail hit-and-runs after intense media scrutiny that was kicked off by the L.A. Weekly cover story "L.A.'s Bloody Hit-and-Run Epidemic."

Hit-and-runs "need to be prioritized," says Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition education director Colin Bogart. "This needs to be really addressed."

The Santa Monica shooter the SMPD says is John Zawahri.
It didn't take long for nutosphere to pontificate about the possible motives of alleged Santa Monica rampage shooter John Zawahri.

His family is from the Middle East, therefore he must have been an extremist -- a domestic terrorist with roots in a Western-hating world. Not so:

Is LAPD Chief Charlie Beck More About Spin Than Solving Hit-and-Run Epidemic?

Categories: Crime

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck
The Los Angeles Police Commission will receive a long-awaited report from LAPD Chief Charlie Beck on Tuesday morning about L.A.'s serious hit-and-run epidemic. Judging from a copy of that report, it looks as if Beck is more interested in repairing public relations damage than solving a major public safety problem.

"The report is all spin to get around the elephant in the room," says Don Rosenberg, an L.A. resident whose son was killed by an unlicensed driver and has been keeping close tabs on the LAPD's response to the hit-and-run crisis. "They don't have a good story on hit and runs, and tried to come up with something else."

L.A. Weekly first exposed the controversy in the widely read 2012 cover story "L.A.'s Bloody Hit-and-Run Epidemic," which caught the attention of L.A. City Councilman Joe Buscaino and California State Assemblyman Mike Gatto.

A custodian at Santa Monica College reports witnessing a gunman in military-like apparel shooting an elderly woman just outside the campus library today.

Click here for full details on the shootings around Santa Monica and Santa Monica College earlier today.

Jorge Saldana, 47, says that he was in the library checking fire extinguishers when he saw the Santa Monica College gunman -- who police believe shot five four people in three different crime scenes around Santa Monica before heading to the campus -- come down a staircase, toting his weapon. "To me, he looked like police," Saldana reports. He believes the man was wearing a bulletproof vest. "He was very calm, walking very slow."
