Phil Jackson: Learned in a late-night call that his services were not wanted after all.
It was the biggest "Screw You" in hoops history.

Phil Jackson is not coaching the Lakers today because Jimmy Buss and Jackson do not like each other and never have.

It's that simple and that complex.

Lakers management fired head coach Mike Brown today, just five games (and four losses) into the season.

The LA Times is calling it the earliest firing in Laker history.

On the bright side though, Brown is $11 million dollars richer, he doesn't have to deal with the team's notorious divas anymore, and rabid fans will no longer be tweeting death threats at his son, Elijah.

Categories: Lakers, Sports

A Lakers' championship parade this year? Don't count on it.

There are some crazy-ass Lakers expectations floating around town. The last time expectations were this high, USC had a No. 1 pre-season ranking and Matt Barkley had a premature Heisman coronation. How's that working out for Trojans fans?

No doubt the new-look Lakers will win a lot of games and go deep into the playoffs.
But they won't win the NBA championship. And anything short of an appearance in the NBA Finals will be considered a catastrophic failure for a Lakers team whose five starters have 33 All-Star appearances among them.

Fox 11 News
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has seemed confident in his defense of his acceptance of very valuable tickets to happenings including Lakers post-season games, the Oscars and the Grammy Awards. He says as long as he's attending the happenings in his official capacity as L.A.'s top dog, he's allowed to sidestep ethics rules that require him to declare the tickets as gifts, list the price, and say from whom they came.

But Fox 11 News has been all over Villaraigosa like a leggy TV reporter, and this week it reports that it got a hold of the mayor's calendar of official events and that nowhere does the document list such outings:

lakers bonfire.JPG
[Updated at 10:55 p.m.]. Some fans were starting to get out of control Thursday night following the Lakers' 83-79 win over the Boston Celtics. A few people appeared to have been beaten up as unruly men gathered at Flower Street and Olympic Boulevard near Staples Center. Some hooligans attacked vehicles, throwing cones at them and blocking their paths. At one point a late-model Lamborghini was rocked back and forth by fans. At least 20 people were arrested, police said.

It sounded logical enough. Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck warned ruffians to stay away from Staples Center for Thursday night's final game of the NBA championship series between the Lakers and the Celtics. So he implied that people without tickets to the game wouldn't even get close to the Staples Center/LA Live area. Problem is, there are other events happening there, including the Los Angeles Film Festival, which has screenings scheduled at the same time the game will be happening. [Update after the jump].
