Categories: NASA

After months of preparations--tree cutting, power line lifting, street sign removing--the day is finally upon us. The space shuttle Endeavour left LAX on its final mission to Exposition Park late last night. And it's traveled a few dozen feet so far.

There will be rolling street closures to accomodate the shuttle throughout today and tomorrow, but spectators who can navigate the labyrinthine maze will have the chance to view the shuttle at three designated times and locations.

Moving the space shuttle could be a real Challenger.
The Endeavour is scheduled to begin its excruciatingly slow steamroll through South Los Angeles tomorrow afternoon... but the move will likely be delayed if rain remains in the forecast. (The space shuttle's fragile tiles absorb water like little sponges, adding to the shuttle's already considerable 170,000-pound weight.)

That's just as well, though, because there are a lot of things that could go terribly wrong on the shuttle's mission from LAX to Exposition Park.

We count them down here, beginning with the collapse of the Manchester Boulevard bridge.

Your glioma tumor doesn't stand a chance.

If you're one of 20 lucky adults to participate in the trial (only requisite: a need for open-skull tumor surgery), picture this:

The space sombrero.
It turns out the so-called Sombrero Galaxy -- shaped like the Mexican hat -- is now two.

Ay Dios mio: Leave us Latinos alone for two seconds and -- boom! -- we multiply.

Well, not exactly. The Sombrero was two all along, NASA Spitzer Science Center researchers at Caltech said recently:

Dragon.
The Space Shuttle might be a relic of the past, but that doesn't mean America isn't still going to space. More and more, it's becoming a private affair.

Elon Musk's Hawthorne-based SpaceX was given a preliminary green light by NASA today for its second space mission. This one will be special, though:

The SpaceX Dragon capsule will be allowed to ...

Red Moon Rising Tonight: Rare Lunar Eclipse Comes to L.A.

Too bad this didn't happen during Halloween season. It's spooky nonetheless.

So break out your favorite medicinal herb, put on a good jacket, and howl at the moon until morning, because a rare lunar eclipse is coming to Los Angeles. And not only that, but as the sun rises the moon will appear to be red.

And ...
