The LAPD's ridiculous-looking hazmat robot.
The Academy Awards in the heart of Hollywood make the perfect target for a terrorist. (Or an Occupier.) They're the ultimate symbol of Western culture, celebrating billion-dollar blockbusters and caught up in a media frenzy of nip slips/gown slits.

Of this, the LAPD is well aware. Thus the massive security detail deployed at last night's awards show:

TSA Officers Confuse Insulin Pump for Gun at LAX, Declare 'Security Breach'

Diabetes Mine
Visual guide: How to distinguish a gun from an insulin pump.
This morning's big TSA blunder at LAX was kind of the opposite of cupcakegate -- call it diabetesgate.

Here's what happened, according to the Los Angeles Times: A woman with an insulin pump on her person was screened with one of those privacy-infringing porn machines the TSA likes to call "advanced imaging technology" body scanners.

Officers reportedly interpreted the shape of the pump as a gun. But before they could search their target, she wandered off to find her gate...

Insane Superbreed of 'Vapor Wake Detection' Bomb Dog Now Patrolling LAX

They're here. And they're smarter than you.
Underwear bombers and Lieutenant Brodies of the future, beware.

The LAPD has recruited a new class of canine to help hunt terrorists at LAX, and their nose muscles are as hot and rippling as Schwarzenegger's biceps in the '80s.

Raised and trained on what we imagine to be a thriving puppy boot camp at Auburn University in Alabama, the dogs are a product of precise nature/nurture. By the end of their training, the university claims they can track down a bomb just by getting a whiff of the air somebody walked through...

Is the TSA on a Terror Kick at L.A.'s Union Station?

Categories: Terrorism

Trolling for terrorists.
Not any more than it has been for the last four or five years, says Nico Melendez, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokesman for Los Angeles. And not any more than at any of L.A.'s other stations -- Metro, Greyhound, etc.

He says the CBS LA piece today on increased TSA presence at Union Station is probably in response to an article the Los Angeles Times ran last week on the federal agency's expansion from airports (where their porn scans and crotch grabs have become something of a terrifying meme) to ground-level transportation, as well.

But it's not exactly a recent development, according to Melendez.

Tourists are the latest target of the federal government's domestic terrorism watch.

The "If You See Something Say Something" anti-terror campaign is now expanding to America's hotels.

Fair enough, but consider that the "See Something" initiative was originally launched in conjunction with the Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative, itself an outgrowth of the LAPD's own anti-terror guidelines, which include ...

9/11's 10-Year Anniversary Prompts LAPD to be at 'Full Strength,' Chief Beck Says

Updated at the bottom with news of a "credible" terrorist threat for the East Coast. First posed at 7 a.m.

Though we know that two of the 9/11 attackers spent time in Los Angeles before the events that changed the course of contemporary American history, our city is often though of as a low-on-the-list target for terrorists.

Even so, the LAPD will be on guard this Sunday as the nation observes the landmark 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Chief Charlie Beck told the Police Commission this week that ...

SoCal's bad little suburban boys (and girls) just keep getting craftier.

Most recently, two teens from Simi Valley (Zachary Jackson, 18, and a 16-year-old accomplice), apparently loopy off some heist-movie binge and bored as hell on summer vacation, allegedly brought out the voice decoders for a string of bomb threats that got them arrested on Wednesday --

Updated after the jump with appalled response from the L.A. County Board of Supes. Also, for clarity: The CEO only chaired the oversight board for this project. There is a giant roomful of folks -- especially county attorneys -- responsible for the mess.

We plebeians don't hear much about the suits up at the L.A. County Chief Executive Office -- their jobs are so bureaucratic and paperworky that it's hard to pin them for any specific failures.

Update, 8:15 a.m.: The sister's name is Elizabeth Breivik, and she lives in Century City with her family. KNX news radio is reporting that neighbors spotted the feds entering Elizabeth's home last night -- possibly for questioning -- and that the family left soon after. However, there does seem to be activity inside the house again this morning.

Witnesses told CBS2/KCAL9 that a Century City woman who might be the sister of accused Oslo terrorist Anders Behring Breivik was paid a visit by authorities over the weekend, though the purpose of what was reported as questioning wasn't entirely clear.

Anders Behring Breivik, alleged to have killed 93 people with bombs and bullets in Norway last week, mentioned Los Angeles in a "manifesto" that came to light after the attack.

Here's what he wrote about L.A. and the sister:

Reports abound this morning of a possible Al Qaeda attack plan against 11 officials at L.A. County's own AeroVironment Inc., a top drone manufacturer in the U.S. War on Terror.

Employees of the Monrovia company tell the San Gabriel Valley Tribune they were called into a meeting Thursday afternoon and warned that the FBI was looking into a terrorist plot against AeroVironment -- part of the retaliation effort against Osama Bin Laden's recent U.S. assassination. Creepy stuff.

After combing an Al Qaeda-linked jihadist hit list online, the Homeland Security Today blog confirmed:

U.S. soldier gone freelance vied for his $25 million head.

And in death, turns out, the Al Qaeda mastermind is still relatively popular:

Bill Warren, an over-the-hill (but very much still kickin') shipwreck diver from Oceanside, California, is planning a two-week mission to recover Bin Laden's bullet-ridden remains at the bottom of the North Arabian Sea.

However, unlike Faulker, after years of military experience in Korea and Iraq, Bruggink says his approach was a bit more sophisticated.

Will Obama's demise lead to more terrorism on U.S. soil?

While most Americans today are walking on cloud 9, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, ex- New York Times reporter who has covered the Middle East for seven years says we should be afraid. Very afraid.

Chris Hedges told a group gathered in L.A. Sunday night for a fundraiser for the news site Truthdig that the demise of Osama Bin Laden will only fortify Muslim extremists and inspire them to attack Americans on U.S. soil.

In other words, he argued, Sunday's triumph will only turn around to kick us in the ass. Here's what he said:

Assistant Commanding Officer Blake Chow, the department's counterterrorism commander, told the Associated Press that police will keep a close eye on intelligence chatter for any signs of L.A. connections.

The idea here is that Muslim extremists could plan reprisals in the wake of Bin Laden's death.
