"We figured it was almost like giving music to the Army, or Exxon."
--TransAm guitarist Philip Manley
"At least I can sleep without nightmares."

A couple years ago John Densmore from The Doors was making waves for not letting Ray Manzarek sell Doors songs to everyone under the sun - especially car companies. Some great pieces on it ran in the Nation. (I hate the Doors, but man I admire Densmore)
Also Tom Waits just won another lawsuit in Europe from a company that ripped off his voice after he told them no.
And Nick Cave had some great quotes about not licensing his songs for products (which I can't find at the moment.)
Here's the Nation article:

And here's a letter Tom Waits wrote in support of Densmore:

"NICK CAVE was so appalled when GAP approached him about starring in one of their TV advertisements, he fired off a letter to the clothing store expressing his distaste.
The rocker refused to follow in the footsteps of MADONNA, MISSY ELLIOTT and WILLIE NELSON and star in a Gap commercial, and certainly didn't want to be seen wearing any of the shop's clothes.
Cave wrote: "Dear Gap, I might put on a pair of your jeans if you were to pay me $1 billion, but even then I would have serious reservations."
