Tape May Hold Clue to Identifying Grim Sleeper Serial Killer

UPDATE: Listen to the 911 call here.

Shortly after midnight, January 10, 1987, a Los Angeles Police Department dispatcher received a call from a man who said he was phoning from a pay booth. The mystery caller told the female operator that he wanted to report a murder. He claimed to have seen a man dump a woman's body out of a blue and white van -- covering the body with a discarded gas tank in an alleyway near 1346 East 56th Street. He even gave the license plate number: 1PZP746.

"Is that T like Tom?" asked the dispatcher.

"No, P like in puppy," said the deep-voiced man, somewhat casually.

When the dispatcher asked him for the killer's description, the man, after offering all these details, responded: "I didn't see him."

The dispatcher asked the caller for his name. He laughed nervously before responding: "I know too many people. OK then. Bye Bye."

The dead woman was later identified as 23-year-old Barbara Ware, the fourth victim of L.A.'s elusive Grim Sleeper, the longest operating serial killer west of the Mississippi. Ware was shot once in the chest and was found covered in trash. A plastic bag was draped over her upper torso and head.

The chilling recording of the conversation between the dispatcher and the mystery caller was played back at a morning press conference today at the LAPD's Metropolitan Dispatch Center, along with details about the 1976 Dodge van and the nearby church that, in a startlilng turn of events, later proved to be the registered owner of the suspect vehicle.

Today's press conference marked the first formal public appearance of Police Chief Bill Bratton regarding the Grim Sleeper. Bratton has taken hits from both the public and local media, including the L.A. Weekly -- which broke the story revealing that the LAPD had not not informed residents that a serial killer has been murdering women in South Los Angeles since 1985.

Police for the first time today also repeatedly referred to the serial killer as the Grim Sleeper, a name chosen by the Weekly last August before it broke the story. The Los Angeles Times has published several stories on the serial killer since that time, but has steadfastly refused to use this now-widely used nickname.

Pronouncing him the "Grim Sleepa" because of his Boston accent, Bratton said the killer is "the only still-outstanding serial murderer working in the city currently."

Bratton told a swarm of TV, radio and newspaper reporters that the suspect van was still "warm" to the touch when the cops found it less than 40 minutes after the 1987 call, sitting in the parking lot of the now-defunct Cosmopolitan Church on South Normandie Avenue.

A clue: The blue and white van

"This was prior to 911 and cellphones. This was prior to DNA," said Detective Dennis Kilcoyne, who was flanked by Bratton, Deputy Chief Charlie Beck and Captain Denis Cremins, as members of the 800 Task Force assigned to the case stood nearby. "All police had was a man on a pay phone after he put a dime in it."

The Cosmopolitan Church

That same night 22 years ago, the Cosmopolitan Church was having a sleepover for mothers and their kids. Church members told detectives that the van with the license plate matching the anonymous tip was used to shuttle people around until 11:20 p.m. Ware's body was found in the alley (four miles away from the church) one hour later, and Detective Kilcoyne explained that police think Ware was killed at least three or four hours before her body was actually dumped.

Kilcoyne said that the LAPD's scientific investigations division looked over the van, but because of the state of technology 22 years ago its members only took photographs, fingerprints and vacuumed fibers off the seat. That evidence, now considered far too basic, lead to no clues.

Thus the release of the dispatch call to the public. "We are presenting a mystery to the public," said Kilcoyne. "Personally, I think the answer is there."

DNA and ballistics have linked the Grim Sleeper to 10 women and one man who were murdered almost exclusively along a section of Western Avenue.

I do not think this is a great story as a matter of fact it is the most horrific story for several reasons. 1. Eleven people or more (and I believe there has been more) are victims further victimizing all of their families and communities. 2. All of those years and NOTHING! People are incarcerated without evidence so I know damn well something can be done with evidence, as in this case YOU HAVE WHAT IS CONSIDERED EVIDENCE!!! I thought evidence never went cold. So, you do learn something everyday well, try to learn who in the hell is killing our babies!!!

Looks to me like van was left in a mad rush...who parks past the parking stop and against the wall like that....especially at a church...? Is there any way to find an old list of church members and circulate their pictures to the surviving victim for possible ID? Maybe circulate just a picture of that custom orange pimped out pinto to original church members...I bet someone from that church membership remembers that custom car.!!..and I bet GS lives close to that church. Did Barbra have any connection to that church, or reason she may have been there that night?

hi
yes, that passenger van was driven from the cosmopolitan church at around 11:20 p.m.that cold january night and back to the church about 12:30 a.m..the driver didn't know he had been spotted and reported to 911 at 12:19 a.m.and he went straight back to the church with that van and returned the keys and joined the sleepin the church was having that night or went home. the police said that passenger van had been driven with the keys because they couldn't find any hot wiring to say it had been stolen.the grim sleeper is a member of the now defunct cosmopolitan church of los angeles (new name?) or attends it's meetings.the driver crashed into the church's parking lot wall because 1)he was tired or 2)he didn't know how to drive that type of passenger vehicle or 3)he was scared and lost control of the van for a second?they say he's a black man, over 50 years old now and still active(last murder was 2007)likes flashy cars, good clothes and knows his way around that section of los angeles. He thinks himself the boss and when he can he likes to prove it.the fight isn't over yet.

this creep thinks our Creator makes trash when creating some folks and its his job to kill and dispose. jov is right he lives nearby. cowards like that are afraid to venture too far from the hood. no doubt he is a member or participant in some nearby church. he has major conflicting issues with what constitutes good and bad people. he will be running soon to a hood near you once he finds out how hot his nearby area is becoming. someone in the old neighborhood absolutely knows who drove that whacked out pinto back in the day. this guy is now in his late 50's early 60's and realizing his life too is not eternal. either he is preparing to meet his maker clean and can be found in the church or/and needs to quell growing anxiety by finding some more "trash" and doing what he does. he demands to be thought of as smart. he knows he correctly sized up what seemed to be lack of interest in the authorities pursuing the case. he believes black people are not as smart as he, though he is black too, and hence his nerve to dump the body of the woman in clear sight of others in the neighborhood. lets hope the authorities and people in the neighborhood prove him wrong very soon.

I see that the Grim Sleeper moved to NC and is driving a truck now. He let one get away (again) who remembered a few details about the experience... http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/13/searching-for-a-serial-killer/ or maybe there are more thin, black serial killers that are active in the USA?
