Shepard Fairey Attacks 'Eastsider' Blogger

The Eastsider L.A. ran an interesting piece recently about renowned street artist Shepard Fairey having the brick walls of his Echo Park studio-gallery sandblasted and coated with anti-graffiti sealant. The post, "This is One Wall Shepard Fairey Wants to Keep Free of Self-Expression," noted that Fairey, the creator of the iconic Obama Hope poster illustration, had recently pleaded guilty to acts of vandalism in Boston. The implication was clear -- that Fairey was not practicing what he tagged. In an emailed response to a question for the piece, Fairey told Eastsider blogger Jesus Sanchez that the repeated tags of Fairey's Sunset Boulevard Building were taking a toll on the brick walls, which he wanted to protect.

The post ran Monday and Sanchez soon received a second email from Fairey. In the blistering missive posted on Eastsider L.A. today, Fairey went on the warpath, denouncing the story as "obnoxious" and "a cheap shot."

"I'm not mad at the graff artists who have hit our building," Fairey wrote, "I just like the brick unadorned. I think it is important for people to be able to speak freely, but if I'm watching a channel whose content is not my cup of tea I may choose to change the channel. It does not make me an opponent of free speech."

Fairey was clearly pissed and both impugned Sanchez's integrity as a writer and attacked him personally. Toward the end of his email, Fairey said, "If you have any integrity you will post my response along with your home and office address as an invitation for people to display their art there. Your attempt to portray me as hypocrite was thinly veiled incitement for people to tag our building."

Eastsider readers have responded with a large number of divided comments, with a discernable majority seeming to line up against Fairey.

John Sprayman says:

So did Sanchez provide his home and business addresses or was Fairey right: what was good for cooking Fairey's goose wasn't necessarily good for Sanchez' own gander?

Um Understanding says:

John,
Fairey is the hypocrite. He vandalizes property with "art", but gets upset when his property gets vandalized.

Why should Sanchez provide his address? He doesn't go around vandalizing other people's property. He is at least philosophically consistent.

Wrong, Um Understanding.

Fairey is Liberty Valance, and there is always a subset folks that want to take down the fastest draw. He's a target, and it's not hypocritical for him to want a taggers to move on to a place where their work A) is up longer and B) isn't thrown on the walls just because it's Fairey's; not because he's a graffiti artist, but because he's the most well-known.

Wait, does LA Weekly report on graffiti?

Does LA Weekly have graffiti removal on their buildings?

Wait, is this news?

If you are a tagger and your piece gets bombed than tag over it again and again and again until the other guy gives up. Or if you are in central LA shoot him. This is a general rule known by almost all taggers and it is a way of life. If you are tagging you will get tagged, period.

It only seems fair if Shepard Fairey is upset about what someone else wrote about him that he should write something back. This is one of the rules we live by, golden by it's name. If Fairy wants the blogger's address to be posted let him get it himself. Or did Fairy post his own info? No? Than don't tell others to do your work for you, Fairy.

As for the anti-graffiti cover of his building, this isn't news, no one wants their home bombed, but than again if you are a tagger this is part of the price you pay. Don't whine when someone finds out where you live and bombs your house, if you can't handle that stick to canvas.

James says:

What seems to be overlooked is that Fairey hits building which are not occupied businesses. When he does do a piece that is on an occupied building he gets permission from the owners to do the it. I don't think he's being very hypocritical at all. If you were in his position, would you want your home or business getting tagged all the time?
