Octuplet Mom's Publicist: "There's Nothing Left to Defrost"

Categories: community, general

As a press representative for Union Pacific Railroad, Joann Killeen has plenty of experience with train wrecks, which may explain why she is handling publicity for Nadya Suleman, the Whittier mother who gave birth to octuplets last month. You might say Killeen is the 47th member of the maternity triage team that tended to Suleman, whose in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy has generated the worst blowback against a mother since Casey Anthony reported her young daughter Caylee missing. Killeen is quick to point out that Suleman, who had six frozen embryos from her previous conceptions implanted in her, did not set out to have a multiple birth. Judging by a conversation with her, Killeen and her partner, Michael Furtney, have certainly had their work cut out for them in the pro bono case.

"There's another side to this whole story - the impact on me!" Killeen says. "I've been in seclusion - the media are parked outside my house in Brentwood and paparazzi follow me, thinking to use me to find Nadya." So far, she said, she's received 500 phone calls from media outlets and her company's Website crashed for four hours last week from the volume of emails it was receiving. Many of them were death threats against Killeen or Suleman and her family.

"You're nothing but an ambulance chaser," one man called. "I'm going to put you in my wood-chipper."

"I'm going to cut you up in pieces and leave you at the bottom of the ocean, where you belong," offered another. What stuns Killeen is that her attackers take the time to fill out email forms on her company's Web site, nonchalantly leaving their names and email addresses behind, just as they call Killeen at home to brazenly leave messages on a machine that records their numbers. Killeen is used to this kind of stuff, having had angry letters slipped under her hotel door in Ithaca, New York, when her client, Walmart, was pushing to build a store in the collegiate town. Besides, dealing with this is nothing compared to the job of rehabilitating Suleman's image.

"This was not an entertainment story - it was crisis management," she recalls. "I had to put a gag on Nadya's mother, who sold her out to RadarOnline. They paid her $40,000 to sell [Nadya] out and she can't talk about her daughter for three months."

Nadya Suleman has become a lightning rod for public anger - not only because of the fact that she is an unemployed single mother with, now, 14 children, and receiving welfare. She's also become a magnet for nativist and racial fears - a woman who might be getting an easier ride if her name were Sullivan and not Suleman.

"I think there are multiple issues involved here," Killeen says. "This is really about a woman's right to choose, about what she does with her body and how she creates her family. Nadya and IVF run against the American paradigm of a married couple with 2.5 children - there's no man involved here, no bank account." Killeen also believes the current uncertain economic times are making people feel nervous about a phenomenon like Suleman.

For now Killeen, who's appeared on Dateline and Dr. Phil, is focused on turning the tide in her client's favor. "This story has arms and legs," she says without understatement. She also believes Nadya Suleman's days in maternity wards are over.

"There's nothing left in the frozen vault," Killeen says. "There's nothing left to defrost."

Killeen's attempts to inject "a woman's right to choose" into this story strikes me as blatant baloney. I have a Bachelor's in Women's Studies, i'm a card-carrying feminist and nobody supports a woman's right to choose more strongly than I do. This is NOT about choice. This is about a selfish, entitled brat who thinks that the state of California has an obligation to pay for the fruits of her obsessive/compulsive disorder. Churn out all the brats you want, Suleman, just don't expect taxpayers to give you a DIME to support your bizarre experiments in littering up this state with your unfortunate progeny.

And publicists like this woman make me sick to my stomach. Perhaps Killeen and Todd Black/Gil Gabot can get get together sometime and discuss how difficult their lives have become since they made decisions to take on clients that the world rightfully finds distasteful.

It must have been this publicist or her partner that injected the whole Envy angle in the media Yesterday. People were "envious" of the 14 broken children right at birth of the welfare mom. Here I notice the suggestion of race. Like there could be no legtimate reason to see pure evil in what has happened here. I am a minority. No I am not a Uncle Tom or Aunt Jemina... I think this is criminal behavior on the part of the Doctor and the "Mom". Some Mom...

Steve, it doesn't matter whether her last name is Sullivan or Suleman. What matters, and what most clear-headed people know, is that Suleman has few live brain cells and that 14 kids unfortunately will grow up in a dysfunctional home with a twisted, selfish, irresponsible mother. The kids don't deserve that upbringing. They need to be put up for adoption.

Shannon McCarthy says:

Are you people crazy? This isn't about the mother and her dysfunctions! There are 14 children out there now, what's done is done!! If you can't prove she is neglectful or abusive, then shut up!!! Would you rather see these children on the street, with no health care, no security at all? If you're not directly having to pay her money then don't worry about it! Why don't you spend your time writing harsh words toward the people who abuse and neglect their children and towards drs who abuse and neglect their patients?!? I don't see you on the blog about the abortion clinic that killed a live baby!! And I am pro-choice, by the way. Get over it, what's done is done, these kids deserve every chance, don't punish them because of their mother's issues.

akashana@bigstring.com says:

It's not about her ethnicity. It's not about her marital status. It's about her not having the means to support her children without sucking at the government teat. It's our tax dollars paying for the extensive medical care these kids will need, just like the government is subsidizing the healthcare of the childrens she already has and can't afford. I don't give a whit if her name is Sullivan or Suleman or if she has no husband or 10. What I care about is the irresponsibility of her being allowed to implant any more embryos at all when she already had 6 kids at home. This was an extremely high risk pregnancy. What if she had died giving birth? What of the children who would have been orphaned? Shouldn't doctors consider them also before they perform a risky procedure? I'd like the government to subsidize my health care too. I haven't had blood pressure medicine in over a year. I have no insurance and can't afford a doctor visit, yet my tax dollars are going to subsidize these folks' health care. I am a liberal Democrat, and I have HUGE problems with this. Somebody needs to be held accountable here, and it's obvious it's not going to be the mother.

lynnie says:

I am embarrassed that Killeen and Furtney are in my profession. For their own self-interests, they have taken as a client a clearly mentally-ill woman (it's curious how they might've crossed paths with her to begin with, since Suleman is quite a change from Walmart and Western Pacific). And they have thrown every timeworn spin against the wall to see what they can do to prolong this ride for themselves, while permitting Suleman to keep rambling through her illogical, glassy-eyed opinions. If these publicists had values and morals, they would be working with Suleman's family and friends to get her the help she needs and enable her to gracefully bow out of the spotlight so that these poor innocent babies can have a chance at shaking the lifetime "freak" label. Of course these two publicists took on this project pro bono: the exposure they've personally received - I had to re-read the article since I thought I'd misread that Killeen herself had appeared on Dateline and Dr. Phil - will make them tantalizing to future troubled hangers-on and wannabes seeking representation, fame and endorsement deals.

it takes a lot of money for IVF so if she is already on public assistance who paid for that? This whole thing was a poor lack of judgement on the MD's part, and her part. Now the government and the tax payers like you and me will pay for all the care from start to end for these children. It makes me angry to think that she expects that people will just give and help and had no thought to the outcome.

jodi says:

The media has misled the public delibertly on this issue. I heard early on that this woman was using 6 cells each time she tried to get pregnant. Most times the result was one child and a set or 2 of twins. Therefore the doctor and patient working from her history would have good reason to believe that only one or two babies would result for this woman. Given her history, I am sure she was surprised when 7 babies were seen but at that point it was her decision to decide if she was willing to kill some off making more room for the survivors. She sounds like a woman that just could not abort any for her own personal reasons..........and that is choice she is entitled to make for herself.

This woman doesn't seem insane or illogical to me, I've seen her speak, your slander is ignorant, I love to see you people on here whining about society providing for its next generation while at the same time ignoring how much the FEDERAL government takes from you and spends on nothing of value to you, your family, your community, your county, your state, your country, but yet... you choose to whine about a few dollars while our Government does nothing about a financial system that pillaged our nation to the highest level of debt ever achieved by any nation in the history of the planet. Whats done is done, anything threatening this woman's life or well being is threatening the mother of these same children that will one day be adults, see your comments and want to KILL YOU for your threats against their birth giver. You sound like you would have rather have had her murder her babies when it was discovered there were so many, and for that you're monsters, what if your parents had decided it was inconvenient for you to exist, think about it, does it fill you with rage? It should. God bless these children, and all of you ignorant life hating excuses for humanity.

GG says:

You "had to put a gag" on Nadya's mother. That sounds rather threatening, Ms. Killeen. Let's hope that's just a figure of speech and you're not actually threatening this poor woman.

lxi says:

"Nadya and IVF run against the American paradigm of a married couple with 2.5 children - there's no man involved here, no bank account."

no, see here's where you don't get it, Ms. Pro Bono Publicist. first off no one cares that there's no man. single women have IVF all the damn time. Lesbians have IVF all the time. There is not a lack of a man, there is a lack of a WAGE EARNER!!!
And there WAS a bank account to purchase an obscene amount of IVF, obscene given the lack of resources and mental health of the mother. There's only "no bank account" when it comes to paying to raise the fruits of those very expensive IVF procedures.... Why? Because the government is always there to make ends meet.

And this issue exists with or without the 'fluke' of octuplets. She willfully went back for another artificial impregnation despite knowing she had no means to provide for even 1 more child, since she didn't have means to provide for the 6 she had already created. She willfully went back to create more babies, while already receiving "government help" (and then had the audacity to lie about not receiving that "government help" on national TV.) SHE LIED. You can't blame that on the economy.
Also, who does she think is going to hire her as a "counselor" when she is obviously not dealing with a full deck of cards herself? She's not competent to be anyone's counselor!!!!!!
she has ADMITTED that she has unresolved childhood issues on national TV...and yet instead of seeking THERAPY she chose to spend insane amounts of money creating babies she cannot pay for.

planejane says:

The right to choose in this case is a joke, obviously the girl is mentally not all there. The mother was right to talk about her daughter and getting paid for it was a nice benefit, the daughter brought her mother into it by saying she had a lonely childhood.
I am NOT watching any TV show including TMZ that will report on her, and I will write to the other advertisers of these shows that I will not use their product. This woman should NOT be on TV flaunting her big belly and exploiting her children for money.
When is someone with responsible authority finally putting an end to this. Oh, and get the doctor to pay for child support, he knew that her chances of multiple birth were high.

How does a publicist get a gag order to prevent the grandmother from telling her own story, expressing her own opinion, about her own experience providing for her grandchildren?

Crazy people have a way of attracting other crazy people into their sphere. I think the publicist's mental health is a bit off, too. She seems to see herself as a rescuer of lost causes. First Walmart and now Nadya Suleman. Who's next? Bush and Cheney?

nano says:

Jane,

I was wondering that, too.

Exactly how does a publicist get a gag order on someone who supporting her client and taking care of the woman's children?

What is the underlying case which would allow this "publicist" to keep the grandmother from selling her story?

I mean, the whole point of the PR angle is to pimp Nadya to the paying media,,

what is just justification here.

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 13 2009 @ 8:12PM
Kathleen says:

I think Ms. Killeen is missing the point, , the anger is not about a single mom choosing to have a big family. The anger is caused by the fraud her client has so obviously committed. Nadya does not have a back problem or she wouldn't have been able to tolerate carrying a baby because of the stress to her back, yet she took money for disability, spent it on IVF (instead of giving money to support her children), took money for SSI for three of her children ( which ANY difference in income would disqualify her), and I'll bet SSI didn't know about the disability payments or money in the bank or student loans, as that would have disqualified her, along with the food stamps, from receiving it. Her mother has said, Nadya has only bought some toys for her children, THEY have supported them, NOT Nadya. She isn't even paying medical bills for delivering her children, she just passed the bill to the people in California. That is why people are so furious, , and we keep hearing more and more where Nadya expects everyone else to foot the bills and responsibilities for her wants. Should everyone make a list of what they want and forward it to Nadya and expect a check in the mail? That's exactly what she's been doing to everyone else!

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 13 2009 @ 11:25PM
Ravan says:

Nadya's mother needs to:
A) Slap Killeen upside the head for daring to "gag" her
B) Move out, leave, with no forwarding address, and not give another dime or hour of her life to slave for her narcissistic b**** of a daughter
C) Write a book about the train wreck, and how she enabled it by not throwing Nadya the brat out on her ass

Killeen needs to find a new profession - perhaps the world's oldest one. It's the same thing that she's doing now, just more honest.

Right to chose? Nonsense! No one has a "right to *chose*" to stick their hand in my (taxpayer) pocket for 18 years times 14 kids, which is what octopussy has done.

Racism and nativism? Horse pucky! The obsessed idiot looks like just another American mutt to me, no racial issues here. If anything, I might consider her white trash.

Seriously, both Nadya and her publicist are disgusting bottom feeders, out to make a buck at the expense of the public.

IE says:

Its definately not about a woman's right to choose nor is it racism. Its about expecting taxpayers to foot the bill. Its about lying on TV and saying there is no welfare. Did she get any plastic surgery while pg with the other children? Could that be why 3 of them are supposedly disabled? If she was unemployed for so long, who paid for all the plastic surgery and the IVF? GRIFTER!!!

Richard Leelman says:

PRO BONO? The only reason it was pro bono is because Killeen got nothing, therefore it is pro bono, you know when she signed up she was counting on 20% of millions. Sorry it didn't work out. Also this racial thing is solely in Killeen's mind, people are outraged over the self-absorbed, irrational baby machine's handing a 4 million dollar bill to the state of California.

Carla says:

I am in shock. First of all, my parents if they were alive would never have thrown me under the bus in this fashion no matter what. Family comes 1st!!! The threats that are flying left & right are childish & quite mental on there own level. I know she is getting assistance from the state. Everyone has told that one over & over again. If any of those kids need SSI because of any mental or physical problems then let her have that kind of help for them. If you raise the roof on a great deal of other homes in the US, there are other families in the same situation, but that is alright if they get help butr not these children. What is the difference ? She said she didn't expect all the eggs to develope and in most chances they do not, but no body wants to here that. Judge her for all of them fertilizing, threaten her, make her feal that her children are next. How adult is that ??? There are people out there that beat there kids everyday, allow them to be hurt by other adults, and make them grow up broken inside. But, you all focus all your time on a woman that does love all of her kids. Then her ex comes into the picture for his 15 minutes of fame just so he can profit from not Nadya, her babies. Grandma sounds a little unbalanced herself, but no one is even focusing on that, just her daughter. If everybody wants to make this woman suffer, congratulations you are all on the right track, she is scared for her life & all of her kids. Does it feel good to those of you out there maybe there Mom needs some help to find out why she felt she wanted a large family. But those of you who have leveled threats need more help. Every TV show wants to get there 15 minutes to to pick up there ratings, and guess who with? The nutballs who like to threaten women & small children. There isn't an argument in the world that justifies doing that. If there is a response to my comments, it will be just to complain about food stamps, SSI for children, 14 inocent babies, and a young lady that didn't ask for any one of you to stick yuor noses into her personal business. There are 8 babies in the hospital still being cared for, how could anyone threaten the only parent that is going to be taking care of them? GROW UP PEOPLE !!!
