Sean Penn on Prop 8: Shame on Mormons, Blacks

Last night's L.A. Times Gold Derby blog presented a video clip of a somber Sean Penn at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, where his portrayal of gay icon Harvey Milk had won the Best Actor Award. Penn did not look to be in the mood for a political discussion, but when asked by Tom O'Neil and Scott Feinberg about the passage of Proposition 8, the anti-gay marriage initiative, Penn didn't hold back.

"The Proposition 8 thing was a fiasco in California. Mormon movement should be ashamed of itself, the black constituency that supported Prop 8 should be ashamed of itself." Penn was less certain of whether or not a pre-election day release of Milk would have helped beat Prop 8.

Defender says:

Sean Penn Is a prime example of why I go to fewer movies every year. He is an uneducated moron, closet communist, and I sense that there may be a forthcoming "closet outing" for him...

Sphinctersayswhat? says:

Sean Penn is just a idiot who believes his own over-blown self-importance.
What a friggin' peacock. Shame on him for being the closed-minded person who can't accept the opinions of others.
I think his character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High had a higher IQ.....
What a moron.

Michael says:

Does anyone else find it funny "Sphinctersayswhat?" blasts Sean Penn for not repecting the opinion of others while not practicing what he preaches? Ironic, no?

Spicoli Must Die says:

Yeah, like it was only Mormons and African Americans that had anything to do with getting Prop 8 passed.

Penn was raised Cathilic by his mother, his Dad was Jewish. Not a peep about those two religious sects, even though they were both instrumental in passing Prop 8. Kind of obtuse on Sean's part....

Thanks Sean,

I'm hoping your brilliant performance of Harvey Milk is rewarded with Best actor, Best director and Best Film.

Floppy Dog says:

Mostly excellent posts. Maybe it is time that intelligent Americans start boycotting Hollywood. I for one continue to wean myself from TV and movies. It's mostly garbage anyway. Mr. Penn just helps me make it more of a priority to reduce my consumption of Hollywood trash.

Frederick Willman says:

Penn is the best film actor around and "Milk" should get the best film award.

RightCoastToast says:

meh...What's he going to say just after releasing a pro-gay film?

Though, he may very well actually feel that way.

Good for him either way, I couldn't really care less what Sean Penn has to say.

KC says:

Sean Penn is one of the greatest actors alive. You may disagree with his views and actions in real life but to deny he's a great actor is just being a delusional hater.

Penn sucks. Bollywood rules now. Burn Hollywood.

Dave says:

Thanks Sean: I am ashamed. I mean, to oppose someone's behavior? That's unconstitutional! I just changed my mind about pedophiles and murderers. I mean its just a tendency they have, they don't choose it, its just what they were born with...I shouldn't oppose them. Just let em do it...right?

Oscar Espada says:

Sean Penn is a great actor and should get an Oscar for hiw portrayal of Harvey Milk; but most of all he is a brave individual for expressing his views openly and he's right: shame on Mormons and blacks for supporting a proposition that denies people of this country their rights!!

bugthecat says:

Lots of haters out there.
Shame. And shame on discrimination. There were plenty of those people around during MLK's time too.
We have a long way to go.

Rex Hump says:

I think Sean Penn should open up the "Sean Penn Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too"

Just because you played a gay politician dosn't mean you are a politician.

susie says:

Sean Penn is a prime example of an actor who will take any role for money! How disgusting!! Harney Milk was no more than a homosexual who was shot by a disgruntled coworker. He was NOT a martyr. He was NOT a hero in any sense. He is NOT someone who even deserves a second thought.

Linda in California says:

Some of you Anti Prop 8 people need to get a clue. I am so sick of hearing that Prop 8 is a civil rights issue! The Gay community has EXACTLY the same rights as opposite sex couples do! California Legislature passed AB 43 which granted that to them. Look it up! All they want is the union to be called marrage! They are making all this fuss over the word marriage! Let it go and move on Please! You took the title Gay from Happy people, (teehee) now let us married people alone!

Johnny says:

Sean Penn demonstrates again that he's one of the biggest jackasses ever produced by Hollywood.

It's a shame he has so much access to the media - because he's got nothing to say that's worth hearing.

Celebrities are itiots. They are not educated. I am sick of hollywood and stupid Californians. Mormons are superior to these itiots.

muhammed atta says:

Penn is a homo, but so what. All that matters is that he has errored in extrapolating his role as an entertainer... into anything else. Just another hollywood simpleton, there to entertain us..... WAIT A MINUTE, I clearly remember him making an ass out of himself waxing wise on that alaska twit he portrayed... "Into the wild". Can't wait for him to do a timothy treadwell.

hopefully penn will die soon, and not make a sound when he does it.

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 13 2009 @ 12:50PM
skyler says:

What is the average education of a celebrity verses a Mormon? Mormons are more educated than celebrities. It is a fact. About the only religious groups with a higher I.Q. than Mormons are Jews, Episcopalians, and Lutherans. Why is that relevant? Well if Mormons were less educated and had a lower I.Q. than it would be relevant wouldn't it? Ignorant hypocritical California idiots.
