Surprise, Surprise: City Council, All Stoner-Like, Postpones Pot Vote

If you're concerned about cats, the Los Angeles City Council is a fast-acting, legislation machine. But if you're worried about those unregulated pot shops that outnumber Starbucks in some neighborhoods, you're going to have to wait. Again.

The council today postponed its hearing on an ordinance that would finally attempt to provide some framework for the medical marijuana dispensary business. The council has been looking at proposed laws for more than a year, during which time the pot-shop business has blossomed and seems out of control according to some critics.

The problem with voting this week is that the council was not happy with City Attorney Carmen Trutanich's by-the-book language, which essentially would have deemed all retail-type pot shops out of order. (State Attorney General Jerry Brown argues that there was never any provision for for-profit dispensaries in the medical marijuana Prop. 215, and Trutanich agrees).

Councilmembers want to add their own spin and essentially water down the ordinance, which would have limited pot-dispensing collectives to non-profit, members' only, virtually cash-free transactions. And, indicative of where the council's coming from, one proposal would reportedly reduce a distance limitation from 1,000 to 500 feet for dispensaries near schools, churches and rehab centers. It's indicative because the 1,000-foot provision alone would have wiped out a lot of the dispensaries in business.

So, it's a pro-business council, and they want to get it right. But Trutanich and county District Attorney Steve Cooley argue that there's no wiggle room for this kind of commerce: Selling pot to anyone off the street with a doctor's note, they say, is against the law regardless of what the council eventually ends up doing.

Dennis,

I love your work and link to it at Mayor Sam, but I have to call you out for this,

"So, it's a pro-business council"

Hmmm, tell that to the bosses at IBEW, AFSCME and SEIU 721.

Besides that, keep up the fine work.

I think that the council is right. We can't forget that we live in this Society and can't do any thing that may harm our society.

Maybe they want to deliberate. Maybe someone should stop and think. For a minute, for a day, for a week perhaps. Think about the fact that NO ONE HAS EVER OVERDOSED on marijuana. Yet alcohol kills 43,000 people in this country ALONE in traffic accidents.

But I don't see you "concerned citizens" protesting the bars, and liquor stores in the city, which outnumber pot shops 3 to 1.

BE LOGICAL WITH THE RHETORIC, YOU CONSERVATIVE GENIUSES!!!!!

I'm glad you cut to the chase in the first paragraph. Showing your ignorance is a great way to start an article. I say that because it allows readers to realize that the article will be a waste.
Where you get off comparing debate over an a cut and dry animal cruelty issue to more important issues of human rights is beyond a need for explanation.
Let's think about this, do we let the table stay cluttered or knock out the lesser issues to allow for more time on more important subjects. Especially when you are talking about something that directly effects the citizen.
Fact of the matter is that be it a licensed shop or not , the owner is far more likely to still follow the rules than take a step back across the line to true illegal activity. As a result the whole argument of kids walking past a dispensary is of no baring on the argument. You may as well step back to the days of prohibition of alcohol (though in reality you stand in the same situation today). As well what of the countless alcohol vendors that dot the streets, to use your reference, out numbering the Star Bucks. All those chances for kids to think about using a substance that will stand a real chance of causing true harm to them and society.
I think it is a wonderful thing to have more Dispensaries than Star Bucks. First and foremost let's look at the number of deaths that are caused by the caffeine in their drinks, now thats only one aspect. Let's look at the number of people who cause accidents when drinking that beverage and driving, doesn't take a genius to realize that there are many more accidents from that cause than from people going to a dispensary.
Now to touch on the numbers issue, guess what, the numebrs only do one thing, and that is prove where there is a demand there must be a supply. so what does it all mean , more patients want cannabis than coffee. which in my view is a good thing especially when in reference to a company with the moral values held by Star Bucks.
At this point I feel to continue putting this article and consept behind it in it's place. to do more would only serve to waste more of my day.
Please in the future try to save some respect for yourself as to write like this is serving no purpose other than to have readers lose it for you.
Peace
PA
