Parole Anyone? Chilling Details Emerge from Susan Atkins’ Last Prison Hearing

The LA Weekly recently nabbed the gory details of Susan Atkin’s last parole hearing on June 1, 2005 at the California Institution for Women in Corona. It turns out that the 250-page report is a blood-curdling reminder of the carnage that occurred in the summer of 1969 when Atkins, then 22, stabbed to death a pregnant Sharon Tate a gruesome 16 times at Tate’s Benedict Canyon mansion.

After killing Tate, prosecutors said Atkins tasted the actress' blood and used it to scrawl “PIG” on her front door. On that dreadful night, the Manson Family also killed Abigail Ann Folger, Voytek Frykowski, Steven R. Parent, and Jay Sebring. The following day, on August 10, members of the Manson family bludgeoned to death Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary at their home in the Los Feliz hills.

During the 2005 parole hearing, a panel of prison commissioners asked Atkins a variety of questions concerning her family relationships, work history, social skills in prison, and plans if paroled.

Highlights of the transcript includes Atkins admission about her long-lost son and her plans to move to the Los Angeles area where she hoped to work with her husband in his law firm.

According to the transcript, Atkins was a model prisoner who worked as a clerk receptionist, teaching assistant, art teacher, peer counselor, and one-time actress who starred ironically in a comedy about dysfunctional families during her 37-years behind bars.

During the hearing, Atkins blamed her role in the murders on a misguided sense of loyalty she felt towards the Manson family. At the time of the murders, she claimed that she was seriously disturbed, mentally ill, delusional and suffering from chronic LSD use. She also alleged to be fearful of Charles Manson.

Manson had preached of an apocalyptic race war he said was predicted in the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.” His followers including Atkins believed they would eventually control the United States — if they performed heinous crimes for Manson.

In addition, Atkins acknowledged that she hadn’t seen one of her brothers since her 1969 arrest. She wrote regularly to another brother and her two nieces but hadn’t seen them in two years. She met her husband 17 years ago, a year after he began writing to her in prison. They wed two years later.

Atkins told the board of commissioners that she hadn’t any contact with her son in 37 years, since the courts took parental custody away when he was 1 ½ years old. According to Atkins, her son was adopted, his records were sealed, and his name was changed.

“I’m very grateful for that,” she said. “And I have no idea where he is. I am just grateful that he hasn’t been touched by any of this.”

If granted parole, Atkins planned to work as a paralegal for her husband and live in the Los Angeles area.

A psychiatric report concluded Atkins was no “immediate threat” to the community if released.

“The inmate has a favorable risk profile for release to the community, conditional on her continued abstinence from alcohol and/or illegal drugs,” it read.

Not everyone was impressed by Atkins show of remorse or good work ethic in prison including Sharon Tate’s sister Debra, and Jay Sebring’s nephew Anthony DiMaria who stated that “because of Susan Atkins, I know that anyone, anywhere, anyone in this room can be slaughtered with their families in the middle of the night.”

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Sequeira called Atkins a manipulator who minimized her involvement in the crimes, and while in prison attempted to sell artwork under the guise that it was going to the victims’ families when it really was “to satisfy her own personal judgment.”

The parole board ruled that even though Atkins served her time in prison wisely, they were denying her parole due to the “gravity of the offense.”

Currently, Atkins, now 59, is asking for “compassionate release” because she is dying from brain cancer and has less than six months to live. Maybe this time the parole board will concur.

To quote Atkins herself, "Bitch, I have no mercy for you." Die behind bars. Good riddance.

Poor Susan! She is really a disturbed individual who happened to choose a wrong path, to use a wrong drug, and affiliate with a wrong family (Manson). That was insane. That was horrible. That was destructive.

But now that is dying anyway. Just let her out and have her family pay for all of her medical bills. Make sure Mr. Whitehouse cannot file personal bankrupcy.

I think it is a shame how these things turn out. On one hand you have a crime so horrible, so devastating, that no matter how awful and how much Susan may want to apologize, there is really no way you can do that. You can't blame the families of the victims for not wanting her released, but with no left leg and paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak most of the time what kind of release is she really going to have. You can't honestly say that she is going free. She is bedridden now. And if that is in a hospital or at a families residence what is the difference??? You can't honestly say you're afraid her potential threat to anyone. Her life is ending. And no matter what anyone decides now, she must prepare herself to explain her life to a much higher power. Like maybe the real Jesus Christ. But no matter what. She is already free people out of jail in a hospital under gaurd. So what's the difference really.
But I sincerely hope that she gets a chance to apologize to the people killed when she finally expires.

Susan was right in her Sawyer interview. There is no apology strong enough for such hidious actions. And I believe her when she says she is grateful that her son was fortunate no to be touched by any of this.
I sincerely hope she gets a chance to apologize to her victims soon.

I think susan is a crazy ass bitch that needs to burn in hell for all the family's she hurt from all her actions.like killing sharon tate and cutting the baby out of her. She's just want's everbody to feel sorry for her because she's dying of brain cancer hell she's always been fucked in her head anyway's so what's now gonna hurt have fun behind bars for the next 6 months of your fucked up life. R.I.P BITCH!!!!!!!!!

No one can forgive Susan Atkins but Sharon Tate, and Sharon Tate is not here to do that.

I think Susan Atkins is exactly where she needs to be. She showed no mercy for Sharon Tate and her unborn child. As far as I am concerned, she received mercy when her death sentence was commuted to life in prison. If she is as ill as her husband claims, then one bed is as good as another for her to die in. She has had nearly 40 more years of life than Sharon Tate and the other victims of this horrific crime. Since her incarceration, she has married three times, used religion to manipulate her way toward a parole from prison, and shown no true remorse for her heinous actions. She claims to have been abused. Many people have suffered abuse and do not go out and commit premeditated butchery. Susan had a child, even though she lost parental rights, she did at leas see him. Sharon Tate never got to see her son on this earth. Susan's son is a grown man. Sharon never got to go to a graduation, wedding etc. in honor of her child. If Susan feels that God has forgiven her and she has made her peace with Him, then good for her. However, God forgives but He is also just, and Susan still is not finished paying her dues in this life. The only way she should leave prison is in a casket. Her family then can say their goodbyes at a private service and bury her in an unmarked grave. With her notoriety, a marked grave would draw curiosity mongers from everywhere, and due to the horror of what she has done, there would be a high chance of the marked grave being desecrated. Susan's family does not need any more pain. They, too, are victims of her crime.

Yes, she did a terrible thing. She had a dysfunctional past. But I think ladies can change easier than us dudes. She felt weak, and killing made her strong. Now she is educated, clean and has self respect. I only wish I had written to her in prison and that she had been released in about 1993. That would have been sufficient time to rehab her and for societal retribution. I would like nothing more than to give her a remission from her horrible glioma which is WORSE than Charlie Manson! I would also like to give her a new cloned leg so that she does not have to be an amputee. Keep fighting, Suzie!!

Susan Atkins should die in prison. She is a dangerous criminal, and she shows no remorse for the horrific crimes she committed. Sharon Tate suffered through the worst death imaginable, as did the others, and Atkins is responsible for this. Tate's unborn child had no chance at life, and Atkins deserves to suffer in prison. Even if she is paralysed and can't speak, this doesn't even touch on the horror she put Sharon Tate through, and she deserves every bad thing that comes her way. She can't expect to have been able to commit those crimes, and not suffer consequences. If she had been released in 1993, and gone to rehab, who's saying she would change? I very highly doubt it. And even if she can't physically harm anyone, think about Manson, and the way he manipulated his "family" into killing for him. Surely she is capable of that to.

The whole situation is very sad. All of these lives ruined because of idiots listening to a madman. She got her parole in '72 when the death penalty was abolished. If she were truly remorseful, she would not be having parole hearings every few years, putting her victims' families through this over and over. She would instead stay in prison and stop complaining and trying to get out. God bless the victims and their families.
