Parole Anyone? Chilling Details Emerge from Susan Atkins’ Last Prison Hearing

The LA Weekly recently nabbed the gory details of Susan Atkin’s last parole hearing on June 1, 2005 at the California Institution for Women in Corona. It turns out that the 250-page report is a blood-curdling reminder of the carnage that occurred in the summer of 1969 when Atkins, then 22, stabbed to death a pregnant Sharon Tate a gruesome 16 times at Tate’s Benedict Canyon mansion.

After killing Tate, prosecutors said Atkins tasted the actress' blood and used it to scrawl “PIG” on her front door. On that dreadful night, the Manson Family also killed Abigail Ann Folger, Voytek Frykowski, Steven R. Parent, and Jay Sebring. The following day, on August 10, members of the Manson family bludgeoned to death Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary at their home in the Los Feliz hills.

During the 2005 parole hearing, a panel of prison commissioners asked Atkins a variety of questions concerning her family relationships, work history, social skills in prison, and plans if paroled.

Highlights of the transcript includes Atkins admission about her long-lost son and her plans to move to the Los Angeles area where she hoped to work with her husband in his law firm.

According to the transcript, Atkins was a model prisoner who worked as a clerk receptionist, teaching assistant, art teacher, peer counselor, and one-time actress who starred ironically in a comedy about dysfunctional families during her 37-years behind bars.

During the hearing, Atkins blamed her role in the murders on a misguided sense of loyalty she felt towards the Manson family. At the time of the murders, she claimed that she was seriously disturbed, mentally ill, delusional and suffering from chronic LSD use. She also alleged to be fearful of Charles Manson.

Manson had preached of an apocalyptic race war he said was predicted in the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.” His followers including Atkins believed they would eventually control the United States — if they performed heinous crimes for Manson.

In addition, Atkins acknowledged that she hadn’t seen one of her brothers since her 1969 arrest. She wrote regularly to another brother and her two nieces but hadn’t seen them in two years. She met her husband 17 years ago, a year after he began writing to her in prison. They wed two years later.

Atkins told the board of commissioners that she hadn’t any contact with her son in 37 years, since the courts took parental custody away when he was 1 ½ years old. According to Atkins, her son was adopted, his records were sealed, and his name was changed.

“I’m very grateful for that,” she said. “And I have no idea where he is. I am just grateful that he hasn’t been touched by any of this.”

If granted parole, Atkins planned to work as a paralegal for her husband and live in the Los Angeles area.

A psychiatric report concluded Atkins was no “immediate threat” to the community if released.

“The inmate has a favorable risk profile for release to the community, conditional on her continued abstinence from alcohol and/or illegal drugs,” it read.

Not everyone was impressed by Atkins show of remorse or good work ethic in prison including Sharon Tate’s sister Debra, and Jay Sebring’s nephew Anthony DiMaria who stated that “because of Susan Atkins, I know that anyone, anywhere, anyone in this room can be slaughtered with their families in the middle of the night.”

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Sequeira called Atkins a manipulator who minimized her involvement in the crimes, and while in prison attempted to sell artwork under the guise that it was going to the victims’ families when it really was “to satisfy her own personal judgment.”

The parole board ruled that even though Atkins served her time in prison wisely, they were denying her parole due to the “gravity of the offense.”

Currently, Atkins, now 59, is asking for “compassionate release” because she is dying from brain cancer and has less than six months to live. Maybe this time the parole board will concur.

Download the parole transcript here.

Poor Susan! She is really a disturbed individual who happened to choose a wrong path, to use a wrong drug, and affiliate with a wrong family (Manson). That was insane. That was horrible. That was destructive.

But now that is dying anyway. Just let her out and have her family pay for all of her medical bills. Make sure Mr. Whitehouse cannot file personal bankrupcy.

I think it is a shame how these things turn out. On one hand you have a crime so horrible, so devastating, that no matter how awful and how much Susan may want to apologize, there is really no way you can do that. You can't blame the families of the victims for not wanting her released, but with no left leg and paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak most of the time what kind of release is she really going to have. You can't honestly say that she is going free. She is bedridden now. And if that is in a hospital or at a families residence what is the difference??? You can't honestly say you're afraid her potential threat to anyone. Her life is ending. And no matter what anyone decides now, she must prepare herself to explain her life to a much higher power. Like maybe the real Jesus Christ. But no matter what. She is already free people out of jail in a hospital under gaurd. So what's the difference really.
But I sincerely hope that she gets a chance to apologize to the people killed when she finally expires.

Susan was right in her Sawyer interview. There is no apology strong enough for such hidious actions. And I believe her when she says she is grateful that her son was fortunate no to be touched by any of this.
I sincerely hope she gets a chance to apologize to her victims soon.

Cyndiejean says:

I think Susan Atkins is exactly where she needs to be. She showed no mercy for Sharon Tate and her unborn child. As far as I am concerned, she received mercy when her death sentence was commuted to life in prison. If she is as ill as her husband claims, then one bed is as good as another for her to die in. She has had nearly 40 more years of life than Sharon Tate and the other victims of this horrific crime. Since her incarceration, she has married three times, used religion to manipulate her way toward a parole from prison, and shown no true remorse for her heinous actions. She claims to have been abused. Many people have suffered abuse and do not go out and commit premeditated butchery. Susan had a child, even though she lost parental rights, she did at leas see him. Sharon Tate never got to see her son on this earth. Susan's son is a grown man. Sharon never got to go to a graduation, wedding etc. in honor of her child. If Susan feels that God has forgiven her and she has made her peace with Him, then good for her. However, God forgives but He is also just, and Susan still is not finished paying her dues in this life. The only way she should leave prison is in a casket. Her family then can say their goodbyes at a private service and bury her in an unmarked grave. With her notoriety, a marked grave would draw curiosity mongers from everywhere, and due to the horror of what she has done, there would be a high chance of the marked grave being desecrated. Susan's family does not need any more pain. They, too, are victims of her crime.

Elliott Bettman MD says:

Yes, she did a terrible thing. She had a dysfunctional past. But I think ladies can change easier than us dudes. She felt weak, and killing made her strong. Now she is educated, clean and has self respect. I only wish I had written to her in prison and that she had been released in about 1993. That would have been sufficient time to rehab her and for societal retribution. I would like nothing more than to give her a remission from her horrible glioma which is WORSE than Charlie Manson! I would also like to give her a new cloned leg so that she does not have to be an amputee. Keep fighting, Suzie!!

Kelsi says:

Susan Atkins should die in prison. She is a dangerous criminal, and she shows no remorse for the horrific crimes she committed. Sharon Tate suffered through the worst death imaginable, as did the others, and Atkins is responsible for this. Tate's unborn child had no chance at life, and Atkins deserves to suffer in prison. Even if she is paralysed and can't speak, this doesn't even touch on the horror she put Sharon Tate through, and she deserves every bad thing that comes her way. She can't expect to have been able to commit those crimes, and not suffer consequences. If she had been released in 1993, and gone to rehab, who's saying she would change? I very highly doubt it. And even if she can't physically harm anyone, think about Manson, and the way he manipulated his "family" into killing for him. Surely she is capable of that to.

The whole situation is very sad. All of these lives ruined because of idiots listening to a madman. She got her parole in '72 when the death penalty was abolished. If she were truly remorseful, she would not be having parole hearings every few years, putting her victims' families through this over and over. She would instead stay in prison and stop complaining and trying to get out. God bless the victims and their families.

Rosie says:

I agree. The whole situation is sad. And it need not have happened but it did. All those innocent victims in their graves, all the suffering their loved ones are still going through. And I believe that Ms. Atkins family has suffered too but sadly it is Ms. Atkins that chose to take a knife and help butcher so many people. She said she is glad that this has not touched her son's life...in this day and age it is so easy to find who your birth parents are and I cannot imagine what that would do to a man or woman to find out their mother or father was a killer. I guess we can only hope none of this has touched that man's life. I cannot say if she has rehabilitated her life....I only know if it were one of my family members killed by her or anyone else, I would not want them released. But that is my feelings. If anyone should have a say it should be the members of the families who's loved ones were so callously butchered by Manson and his followers.

susan atkins is a cold blooded murderer. she said in her own words she was NOT high the night of the murders. Most people at least have remorse after 10 -15 years but not this monster. she deserves to die in prison of a natural death which is 100% more humane than how her victim died.

Crime victim's families who are able to forgive the murderer have been proven healthier, physically and mentally, than those who continue to punish and hate. Susan's release could be healing to all. Her continued incarceration will not bring the Tate family back to life. Susan's suffering accomplishes nothing, and there is no possibility she will endanger anyone should she be released. If the murder victims were not celebrities with the resources to prevent her parole. she would have been paroled years before. Ironically, there is a tiny grain of truth in the delusional depravity inciting the crime; the well-to-do have access to resources that lower classes do not. This is a multi-layered crime and Susan's incarceration re-victimizes the Tate family, in addition to all of us who read of the unrelenting inhumanity with which she treated the Tates, combined with Susan's continued mis-treatment by the system that is designed to protect society, but oversteps boundaries and becomes a powerful arbiter of moral justice.

By virtue of California's recission of the death penalty, Ms. Atkins was shown more mercy than she deserves. Obviously the 6-month window has come & gone. Sounds as though it was just more "I want what I want" B.S. Give her nothing but a grave marker.

She has had life, she took the life a baby from the open wound she created by taking the baby from the mother by force. She killed the mother and father. Wrote pig on the wall with their blood. Remember this before giving her more treatments to keep her alive. Remember this before she has compassionate release. She is choosing to use money which she in fact is not earning, we support her. She is receiving better care than Steve Jobs, Teddy Kennedy and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg . This woman has round the clock treatment and took treatment, asked for the treatment. This is compassion. She has better medical care than more Californians.

Leave her there. Finish her sentence.

I have mixed feelings about Susan Atkins. Almost 40 years has passed. She can't hurt anybody now. I keep remembering what God said. We must forgive to be forgiven. This was just a drugged out girl, a hippy, during an era where hippies were hated. Sharon Tate and the others were druggies also. They were all famous, Susan was a hippy, that is why she has never been granted parole. If it had been another time and other people she would have been released long ago. Now Manson, Watson and krenwinkle should all die in jail, Houten and Atkins should be released. The girl gave up her life for what she did. True they took all those lives and Sharon Tate's baby died also. Susan lost her child too. Manson is an evil child of satan, he ruined many lives not just the dead. Susan did not cut the baby out of Tate, look at the online pictures, Tate is still very pregnant. The baby was taken out during an autopsy. Let God be the judge not us. If Susan is truely confessed her sins and asked forgiveness like or or not the God I worship will welcome her in heaven. All this hate is not hurting Susan, she did that to herself. Like it or not God loves her.

Susan has paid for her crime, she no longer poses a threat to society, it's time for parole. Much has been learned about cults since 1969, and she was left to "de-program" herself. It's amazing to me how many Christians preach justice and forgiveness but live for revenge.

I've seen the interview with Diane Sawyer. Saw the interview she held in 85'. She does NOT seem remorseful to me. The words are there, but so is the sympathy she enjoys milking from the audience. She emphasizes her so-called good works more than her remorse. Her focus is on herself, she put out an autobiography, tried to reap financial benefit from her notoriety, has been married twice, enjoyed conjugal visits...these do not speak of redemption for me. My God, LSD or not, she stabbed a pregnant woman to death. She tasted her blood and used it as ink. Not only that, but she laughed...LAUGHED...as she recounted Tate's horrific death and mocked her pleas for the mercy of her unborn child months after the fact and not under the influence of any drug by then. No, let her stay in prison. Truth be told, she should have been executed over thirty years ago.

Shannen says:

I agree....she is lucky to still be alive! And, that's more than her victims can say.

Susan Atkins should receive no mercy - and I agree with some others, she receives better care than most of us.

They ALL should remain in prison until they die. Simply because 40 plus years have passed, it does not mean the horrific nature of their crimes has been lessened.

The bottom line is, she was sentenced to death which was commuted to life in prison, so let her spend her "ALL" of her life in prison...not just most of it.

I'm sorry but she already had her reprieve when she didn't get executed and the fact that she's been constantly asking for more ever since only demonstrates to me that her remorse is NOT sincere because if it was she would KNOW deep within her heart that she is where she belongs.

Everyone has their own opinion as to the fate of Ms. Atkins. And hard as it is to respect some of them, that's the posters right. The Tate/LaBianca murdrs were horrible but some people fail to forget, not all the victims were celebrites...Steven Parent, aged 18 was simply visiting the caretaker. Gary Hinman, the first known victim of the manson family was a teacher who befirended and helped the Manson Family only to have them take his life. Shorty Shea, a ranch hand. The LaBiancas, a grocery store owner. Whether the victims were celebrities is not the point...the crimes were vicious, brutal and totally heartless. That is why the story will never go away. I feel for the victims loved ones. Ms. Atkins and her cohorts chose to kill and therefore in my opinion deserve to remain incarcerated until they die.

Ms Atkins is right where she belongs. She was shown all the compassion she deserves when her death sentence was commuted. She is a mass murderer. Her and her f---ed up family are responsible for the deaths of ten people. Do the math that is only four years per victim. That is not enough time. Since when do we even entertain the idea of letting serial killers loose on society. Yes I know life goes on, only not for Sharon, Paul Richard (Sharon's son), Voytek, Jay, Abigail, Steven, Leno, Rosemary, Gary, and Donald. She found God in prison so she claims. I hope it was the real one this time, because the last God she followed led her straight to hell.

Anyone who believes the Helter Skelter theory about a race war and taking over the world doesn't understand Charles Manson the con man. Susan Atkins participated in the murders but did not kill Sharon Tate. Read her side of the story.. she has no reason to lie now, she has been in prison 40 years. Read her account of what happened and it makes sense. It paints Manson as the con man he was/is. The master manipulator. Susan deserved to go to prison for her involvement in the crimes but she has paid her debt to society, is no longer a threat and should be released.

I hope it's a painful death too- just like the pain her victims felt when they were being butchered. Yeah- here's to painful death and an eternity in hell bitch.

I do not believe in the death penalty, but California MUST NOT RELEASE Susan Atkins! What message would that send--she stabbed Sharon Tate 16 times while she begged for her life and the life of her child! She is a disgusting psychopath and is dying in prison as was intended in the original sentencing. Prisoners being ill or in pain don't become innocent. She is still guilty and should remain in prison. Cancer cannot absolve her.

Hey Susan? You miss your son? I remember a particularly vivid part in "Helter Skelter" where you happily discussed the fact that you had been giving him fellatio since he was 1 month old. Too bad your "poor, sick, manipulated" self can't just be thrown in a jail cell to die. Save the taxpayers some money on your medical bills! really is a shame they elimnated the death penalty, man i would have paid to watch you die.

These murders were so brutal and I think that matters more to the parole board then who she murdered. I know it matters a hell of a lot more to me.

Sorry Susan. I understand your difficulty, but the 6 month window has passed. Improving? Hmmmm. Not many people improve with brain cancer. You received mercy when you were not put to death. That is what all of you deserved. The crime was bad enough, but your attitudes displayed an essence that cannot be forgotten. God may forgive you, but he will not ever forget what you did. I think you should remain right where you are. All the tears and words in the world will never make up for your actions. I truly believe the only way you should leave prison is in a casket. You may have changed over the years, but that will never erase the memories many of us still have of the horror of the summer of 1969. You have what you deserve.

To anyone out there who may support any of the Manson Monsters... Here is what I have to say to you...

Let them stab you or your child 16 times then tell us how you feel about them!

Then and only then do you have any right to support them!

So many people still today are followers or fan, I mean, WTF, these MONSTERS have even been married and become parents all while in jail.

They all deserve nothing an eternity of hell!

My other thoughts, why on earth does she get medical care. Let that bitch suffer from cancer. We have innocent children being denied medical care and dying from cancer as well..

Let her suffer and give that money to the innocent children!

She deserves no mercy!

Also, shes blames this on drugs... Um woman, you were still proud of your actions months and years after being in jail. No excuses. You are nothing but a monster who should not ever been allowed to live.

I am a Christian and believe at some point in our life we must forgive, Susan Atkins has paid her debt for her misjudgment at a younger age, only God can forgive and help us not the Tate family or any of the others families. I feel there is a major problem with all envoled when a person is on their death bed and has excepeted what she did is wrong and that God has forgiven her, then so should we, we may never forget but we must forgive to be excepted by the Lord with open arms.

although its hard, because Sharon Tate was pregnant, we should all try to remember every victim in this case...
Sharons child who never got a chance at life
Jay Sebring
Abigail Folger
Steven Parent
Voytek Frykowski
Leno LaBianca
and Rosemary LaBianca
sadie, as she loved so much to be called, will never see her husbands home...she will never be allowed to live her life as she wants...she will never see her child
this is the same for all those she brutally murdered...and it is all due to HER actions...well, now she can live by them...and be mocked by them...just as she mocked those she killed...and she still has hell to look forward too because there is no forgiveness for her...no redemption...only hell for eternity...
however...at least her victims have peace...
the world has not forgotten what was done by her...and im glad to see the victims families still fighting for justice...let sadie and the rest of the "family" rot in jail...i hope her death brings more suffering to her than anyone of us can imagine...
and no, god does not love her, as one poster stated...there is no god for susan denise atkins
there is a reason for everything, some say...i think the reason susans death sentence was stopped was due to "someone" upstairs knowing the future, knowing what hellish death was waiting for her...cancer
what goes around comes around, sadie, and it has finally found you...
but dont worry...sadie...youll be reunited with your "family" in HELL! its now just a matter of time...very very little time
my heart goes out to every victim in this sad case...and to their families
im glad to see the parole board found no mercy for this heartless creature who now likes to call herself susan...may they reach the same decision with all the family members on every parole day they have in the future...its just sad the victims have no future

She asked for compassionate leave?? she had no compassion for her victims, or their families that were left behind to think everyday of what happened to their loved ones. When do these people receive a compassionate leave from the pain and heartache they must feel everyday.
All the Manson scum deserves to stay in jail till the day they die, end of story !!
