'Weekend At Bernie's'-Like Scene Unfolds in MDR

Authorities called to an apartment complex in Marina Del Rey last night discovered the body of a man slumped on a third-floor balcony. The deceased, said to be about 75, had suffered a gunshot wound, thought to be self-inflicted. The twist: Neighbors had seen the body, in plain view, over the much of the week but dismissed it as a Halloween prop.

Austin Raishbrook, director of RMG News, said he heard the report of a body broadcast on a Sheriff's frequency about 5:30 p.m. yesterday and went to the scene at 13914 Bora Bora Way to shoot stringer video himself.

A man's body was slumped on this balcony; neighbors thought it was a Halloween decoration.

"One neighbor said he saw the body on Monday but didn't do anything about it because It looked like a Halloween prop," Raishbrook told LA Weekly. "You could see the body in plain view on the third floor. It did look unreal."

He says someone finally did call authorities -- likely because "blood had dripped from the third floor to two balconies below. It wasn't a pleasant scene."

"It did look like a dummy," he says. "I do have some gruesome video."

Officials told Raishbrook, he says, that the fatal wound appeared to be self-inflicted.

"A couple of women walked passed with stollers," he said. "They couldn't believe it happened in the neighborhood. There was disbelief."

Oh, poor man. It would have been a funny story if the outcome wasn't so sad.

Carol H. says:

He may have killed himself out of loneliness. And considering how long he remained you can see why. Unfortunately most senior citizens tend to be ignored, forgotten, or given the most grudging attention even by families.

And since we all will be old one day, it might be best to remember this in our dealings with one another. It seems he had no one to check on him once in awhile. Not even an impersonal agency.

As for Eddie's comment, I am glad not to be related or dependent on him for emotional support.

They couldn't believe it would happen in their neighborhood? Do they know the difference between homicide and suicide?

This is probably the very reason he ended it all...know one paid him any attention or seemed to care. How sad.

Too Bad It Wasn't George Bush says:

Too bad it wasn't one of the Bush bastards. I'd pay money to see them shoot themselves. Or someone else do it for them.

Posted On: Saturday, Oct. 17 2009 @ 7:05PM
Are you kidding me? says:

Are you being serious? You'd pay money to see someone shoot george bush? You're an awful person. I'm not pro-bush or anything, but that is EXTREMELY ignorant and childish. You're the kind of extremist asshole that creates so many problems in our world. Did you ever think that people like you might be way worse for our country than you think bush ever was? That kind of hate towards anyone is what gets us into wars. I don't care if you're 15 or 54, please grow up, get on with your life, and accept that you're view isn't necessarily always right. Please respect others. Please act civilized. I beg you for the sake of humanity and future generations. Completely senseless violence

Hairy Carrion says:

What I don't understand is this man sat dead on his balcony for days. Aside from the naivete and perhaps the indifference of the locals, it would seem to me that the body of this man would begin to smell via decomposition. And what about bodily fluids and such draining down upon neighboring balconies?

We as a society are so divorced from participating as neighbors, community and citizens. Sad.

That landlord better clean that stink up, we are paying good money to live here. We should get some sort of refund for having to go through all this..

DAVID says:

Refund! maybe if the neighbors where more neighborly, this would not have happened or at least would have been found alot sooner
people just thinking about themselves as usuall!

He was to testify at the world court next month for a contract dispute. He was an accomplished architectural engineer and had worked on the library tower in downtown LA. This is one of the tallest buildings west of the Mississippi if not the tallest. He lived in the area for the last 35 years and was well liked in the community. Also, the area next to the building is on the water, so when a person walks by they mostly see the bottom of his 3rd (top) floor balcony. It goes w/o saying that he has a million dollar view in the Marina.
