Airport Surprise: 1,200 Laptops a Week Lost at LAX

Last year Dell computers commissioned a study that found that 12,000 laptops are lost each

week at U.S. airports. Los Angeles leads the pack with 1,200 laptops reported lost or stolen at LAX weekly. Incredibly, most laptops are left behind at security checkpoints, with only 33 percent ever being recovered (17 percent before the flight, 16 percent after).

Now, part of our shock about these numbers comes from the absent-mindedness of  travelers who lose sight of a valuable piece of luggage -- and one that they probably need to conduct their business or lives at the other end of their flights. But another thought comes to mind: Why don't the TSA screeners call after people who have left their notebook computers behind -- are they themselves too busy? do they assume such left luggage is dangerous and immediately dunk the laptops in a bucket of water?

Calls to LAX and Burbank Airport's TSA offices went unreturned by posting time, but Sandee McFarland, who works for a private company that manages Burbank's Bob Hope Airport, says screeners do attempt to page passengers who become separated from their belongings -- then lists the most-often lost items.

"We get belts," says McFarland who works in Bob Hope's lost and found department. "Everyone leave their belts, cell phones, clothing items, thumb drives, keys, watches. I've read about the laptops, but I don't get those -- TSA has them."

A newsletter for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employees offers some advise for tech-lugging travelers. Besides geek-squad mantras to encrypt and back up data, the tips also include some very down-to-earth wisdom: Only take a laptop if it's really necessary to your trip and give yourself lots of time "to avoid mistakes made more likely by having to hurry. Airports are a physical and mental obstacle course."

One employee who works at a Southern California airport and who did not wish to be identified, confirmed how spaced-out flyers become -- especially those who show up half an hour before takeoff and think they can just walk straight on to the plane. This employee noted that TSA screeners will page travelers by name when their identities are known. Still, even here, the employee says, travelers will often later admit they heard their names on the public address system after leaving the security checkpoint -- but somehow didn't make the connection that they were being asked to recover lost items.

The Livermore Lab newsletter says the best way to ensure that lost laptop gets returned is to  leave your name and phone number in its battery compartment -- an area not available to prying eyes, but one that screeners are trained to quickly access. Either that, or take the train.

A.J. Levy says:

What about taking your bully pulpit to help prevent the laptop thefts at TSA sites.

The problem could be solved by designing a bin or a container that would hold laptops. However, there would be some sort of lock with either a key or some combination lock that would lock the top of the bin to the bottom of the bin. Then, only the holder of the key or the combination could open it.

The reason that this would work is that it would be obvious if someone walked away with the laptop that would still be IN THE BIN. The bin would be large and recognizable. People would therefore not steal the laptops because they would be in the bins. If people left their laptops, the laptops would still be in the bins. Then TSA could keep the laptops until the owner arrived.

Nico Melendez says:

Ponemon Institute released a non-scientific study, commissioned by Dell, stating that up to 12,000 laptops are lost weekly and 600,000 lost annually in U.S. airports. The number of laptops was derived from everywhere in the airport environment and do not include passengers that were reunited with their property. The study was done by extrapolating data from informal interviews at 106 airports.

The non-scientific study’s data does not accurately reflect laptops lost at TSA checkpoints and includes laptops lost anywhere in the airport environment including airline ticket counters, terminals and gates.

On average, TSA receives approximately 75 lost or missing laptop claims each month, nationwide.

The non-scientific study’s numbers do not include passengers that were reunited with their property.

TSA makes several efforts to reunite passengers with property left at the checkpoint. These efforts range from airport terminal announcements to contacting passengers to inform them we have their items. We strongly encourage passengers to affix business cards to laptops and other expensive items so we may contact them.

We have a complete list of airport lost and found numbers as well as our claims process posted to our Web site at www.tsa.gov.

For future inquries, please feel free to contact me using the email provided.

These people should check out Spiye.com and install the software. It runs in the background of the PC and take images every 5 minutes or so to upload to an account online. That way if their laptop gets stolen, you can see who stole it.

Joel says:

A few months ago, I was flying out of DFW and left my laptop at the TSA checkpoint. I didn't realize it until I reached into my backpack to discover that, after takeoff! The bag did fit under the seat in front of me a little easier than usual. The next 4 hours on the way to SEA were the longest ever. When I arrived in SEA, I had a voicemail on my cell phone (and also one on my home phone) from a TSA officer. I called him back and he said they had tried to page me (who listens to pages in airports?), but he had the laptop. I was relieved. They turned it over to lost and found and I had to pay $80 (as I wanted it overnight) and got it back. Since then I have been very careful to put it in the first bin. Luckily my name and phone number is on the bottom in 3 languages with phone numbers in China, Argentina, Seattle and Dallas which I frequent. Those are also on my cell phone.

Where do the unclaimed laptops go? I think LAX/TSA should create a program to give them to local schools.

H says:

I travel with not only one but two laptops and the best way to not leave anything behind is to allow yourself time (as said in previous posts) and be organized. I always send my shoes through in the first bin (with my jacket. belt, etc if I have one), then a laptop in a bin, then the second laptop in another bin, and then my carry on after that ... if you do this, then you will grab your shoes (put them on), then grab laptop and put it in the bag that is coming last. This system really works because you will always remember the bag that is last and your shoes that are first so you will also pick up the stuff in the middle!

Here's a comment submitted by Albert Rodriguez, from LAX's public relations office:

This is in regards to your article on lost or stolen laptops at LAX. The statistics from Dell stated that on average 1200 laptops are lost or stolen on a weekly basis at LAX.

Airport PD reports an average of 258 lost or stolen laptops PER YEAR. A good portion of these are returned to the owner. Please contact me for further information and stats. Thank you.

Dave says:

Judging by the comments on this blog, these numbers reported by mainstream media are highly suspicious. If there are actually that many laptops missing per week at one of the most secure public facilities in the world then there is obviously some major inside job.

Simon says:

haha

First, you're a complete moron if you lose your laptop at a security check point.

Second, 600,000 laptops stolen or lost a year in airports is complete BS. Thanks TSA guy for clarifying the stats.

Lastly, LL&L says take the Train... Airports are a million times more secure than a train station. If you are going to be "robbed" it is much more likely to happen at a train station.
