Coroner Reports Lily Burk Died from Neck Wound

The Los Angeles County Coroner reports this morning that 17-year-old Lily Burk died from an "incised wound to neck." In other words, her neck was slashed.

Burk, whose father is well-known music writer Greg Burk, also suffered traumatic injuries to her head as previously reported in local papers.

Burk was abducted outside Southwestern Law School in the mid-Wilshire area on July 24 after she picked up papers for her law professor mother, Deborah Drooz. She was later found dead in a parking lot on Fifth Street and Alameda in downtown Los Angeles.

Her alleged attacker, Charlie Samuel, was picked up less than an hour after the attack for drinking a beer in public. He was arrested for being in possession of a crack pipe. On Sunday, detectives matched the fingerprints found in Burk's Volvo to Samuel, a parolee from state prison.

The San Bernardino career criminal was charged on Tuesday with Burk's murder. He is eligible for the death penalty for the daylight attack on the well-liked teenager.

Burk was a student at Oakwood School in North Hollywood. She was about to star in her school's production of David Mamet's The Boston Marriage.

CP says:

There is a bit of irony to this tragic even. Deborah Drooz, the victim's mother, does legal work for LA CAN (Los Angeles Community Action Network). LA CAN is a skid row activist group that opposed the gentrification of downtown and the "harassment" of the downtown "homeless." They also oppose the enforcement of "quality of life" crimes by the LAPD, like DRINKING IN PUBLIC. The very crime that led to the capture of the murder suspect! GO FIGURE!

Fern Baum Williams says:

I too was a victim of a botched robbery (by two shoreline crips gang members in Venice) and I also have a 17 year old teenage boy. However, I was not hurt physically during that robbery and I am alive today. My heart breaks for the parents of Lily Burk and I can only say how sorry I am for their loss. All of this brings back the terror I experienced that awful night and the sorry I feel for Lily and the terror she must have felt those last few hours of her life.

Observor says:

Society has ignored the blight of the criminal element amongst the insane homeless. If they have criminal histories, they should be permanently interred in camps. They are the fall outs of a capitalist system that looks the other way until a tragedy occurs, such as the brutal and senseless murder of Lily Burk.
Don't bother pursuing the death penalty for this guy; he'll never see the gas chamber/lethal injection table. The death penalty is just a ruse for politically connected, contracted defense attornies to soak the State for millions in fees for phoney appeals.
Throw this animal in a dungeon and let him rot.

ruination says:

Fallout of a capitalist system? More like fallout from the existence of organizations that promote and normalize social dysfunction and pathology like the ACLU and LA CAN and people like Carol Sobel and Gary Blasi.

It turns out that Prof. Blasi lives about a three-minute walk from where Lily did. I wonder if they ever met.
