"High Desert Rapist" from Los Angeles gunned down in Ohio -- Grim but not the Grim Sleeper

Updating our blog from yesterday, a team of FBI and Columbus, Ohio cops gunned down the alleged Los Angeles serial rapist who cops here had dubbed the "High Desert Rapist." It all went down in a bizarre series of events after he was released from Los Angeles County jail on a huge bond -- $3.4 million. (He was way too young to be the Grim Sleeper, we now know.)

Suspected High Desert Rapist Abram Bynum

Besides the truly strange way in which Abram Bynum died -- shot to death after he careened down the I-70 freeway in Columbus and smashed into a big-rig -- was news that cops in Columbus spent time following Bynum around and finally got hold of some bit of his DNA, possibly from a paper coffee cup or the like, sending it for DNA testing in L.A.

That's truly in the category of Weird Police Work. Bynum was right here, in Los Angeles County, jailed with a huge bail amount of $3.4 million, according to the NBC affiliate in Columbus. Two questions: Why on earth did a judge even set bail if prosecutors thought he was the horrific High Desert Rapist (believed to have raped four or five women and teens in the Antelope Valley area)? Why didn't L.A.-area cops get a DNA swab while they had this apparent creep behind bars? What on earth went down?

Here's what we know from WYSX-TV, the ABC-Fox affiliate, and other media in Columbus:

The report from WSYX-6 TV is especially troubling, with reporter Jake Whittenberg interviewing a pleasant woman who lived in Bynum's pretty, columned brick apartment building. She was never alerted about Bynum and let him inside her apartment.

Here's her direct quote:

Bynum and his roommate, believed to be his brother, who lived together in Franklin County, Ohio, were, the neighbor says, "nice quiet guys, kinda shy really. ... I mean he's come in my house...I would never have thought he possessed a gun."

Somehow, Bynum yesterday caught on to the fact that he was under surveillance by local cops and the FBI -- yet another bizarre twist in this FUBAR incident. Even as L.A. authorities were flying in to the Columbus airport with his DNA test hot in their hands, Bynum jumped in his white Cadillac and sped away.

Somebody in Columbus screwed up. Somehow, Bynum knew he was being watched. We'll hear why later. But the question now is: why was a guy worth $3.4 million in bail allowed by Los Angeles authorities to blithely travel back and forth between Los Angeles and Ohio, to innocently visit inside an unsuspecting women's apartments, and to so on?

He's now being linked to rapes in Ohio. Big surprise!

Bynum's final moments, as described by 10TV News in Columbus, went like this:

"He was under surveillance when the pursuit began, which led to his white Cadillac colliding with a tanker on I-70 near State Route 256 around 4 p.m.

"According to police, the chase started in the area of James Road and later continued eastbound on I-70. The Cadillac apparently crossed the median and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes before striking the tanker.

"Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said officers opened fire on the man as they approached the wrecked Cadillac.  Six officers fired their weapons, he said."

I am upset that they chased this man and put others at risk! If he would have crashed and killed someone it would leave a bitter taste in everyones mouth.

Right...shame on the cops for taking this guy out. They should have just waited until the rapist got tired of raping people and turned himself in. That would minimise the risk to the public right?

What happened to word alleged? Innocent until proven guilty? If all this were true about his bail, do you really think he would be allowed to leave the city, yet alone the state? I've been reading the blogs, articles, etc and the only thing which is clear...a young man, husband and father is dead and we don't know if he were innocent or guilty - why? He wasn't given the ability to stand trial. By all indications, the reports I heard and read said he moved and appeared to reach for a weapon, so they opened fire. Why did it take six officers to shoot one man? If Abrahm was guilty then most definitely he should have paid for his crimes, but...what truths do we truly know.

Despite what he may or may not have done, he had a loving wife and children who are ultimately devastated as well. The victims, if they are his victims are...I am saddened for them. I hope they seek the counseling they will definitely need and pray the Lord provides comfort.

Here are questions I have: How did they get the dna sample? How was Abrahm alerted to the surveillance? How does a man with $3.4 million bill afford that type of bail without being a Rockefeller and how does he travel at will from state to state?

It makes one wonder will ever know the truth and whose truth is it anyway?

How in the world did the cops know he was reaching for a gun ? Common since would seem if you rammed into a tanker you might be a little jarred -you think? and maybe his body was just falling forward or sidewards -How can the police see into the car and know there was a gun from a distance ?.It sure was not mentioned earlier in reports about a gun .I think the police officers should have approached cautiously but not to shoot too KILL!Wrong! Yes ,and others were put in harm!

This whole situation is full of holes which truly will never be resolved...I knew abram and needless to say we all really only know the person that they want us to know...however the information surrounding the shooting is extremly questionable. Also the bail issue...come on 3.4 million their is no way that any state would allow that type of situation just fly...I believe Abram may have been a victim of his past juvenile record...either way peace to his family and friends...first Jason and now Abram...man...

I also knew Abram. I just can't believe what they are saying about him. He was a nice man and we need to know the truth and not just what the media is saying about him. As we know, the media says whatever they want to to sell a story.... Rest in Peace and I send my prayers to his family.

In reply to July 8Th 3:40 post

This man had 8 aggravated rape warrants. Why? Because Columbus Police had a warrant to take a DNA sample from him which matched the DNA rape kits from the rapes in the LA area. Its also funny how you say innocent until proven guilty and that the cops didn't give him a chance. I think they gave him a chance when they tried to pull him over. The "chance" was refused by him not stopping and he was fleeing!!! The truck driver stated that the man had every chance in the world to avoid his truck, and even after he took advasive action the Cadillac change coure with him. Hmmm I wonder what he was trying to do?

give me a break....all he did was saved the tax payers a bunch of money. If he wasn't guilty he then there was no reason to run. If he wasn't trying to end his own life why head the wrong way down a busy highway & then swerve at a tanker truck, not to mention I'm quite sure they did just open fire for no reason. I honestly feel for his family, but there is One less rapist off the streets!! Oh yea...Ted Bundy was nice guy to his friends & neighbors too

When I heard the news, honestly I wasn't shocked to hear he was wanted for rapes. Now shooting at the cops I wouldn't have expected that.

Keep your comments to yourself, you insensitive bastard.
Meanwhile, I'm comforting the father because you idiots are exploiting a story and slamming his name. Remember folks, innocent until proven guilty. Can you imagine how his family feels? My god, show a little respect.

Recordstraight says:

This news story is completely inaccurate. All the other news accounts have it correct for the most part. He was not out on bail at all and had never been arrested for rape. He was simply being looked at as a possible suspect and his DNA had been obtained voluntarily one week prior. He was simply a "person of interest" until the results came back. The results came back the day before he ran and did the suicide by cop thing. The 3.5M warrant was issued after the results came in the day before also. He did not know about the warrant. He must have guessed the DNA was going to make him on all the previous rapes he committed, which it did. He panicked and ran when he saw the Columbus cops watching him.

i knew Abram extremely well and his twin brother aaron as well. I would say Aaron needed to be looked at. Mistaken identity. Twins do have the same DNA.

this is to his family members excluding his mother, i am deeply sorry for your loss. for his victims...seek help now. to his mother, i am sure you feel a burden for his confusion. well like his victims you should seek immediate help, ok-deer one, (not a typo.) hopefully no one of his family will read this.

but to the guy who suggest to check out aaron-well to my disappointment 35 years ago-it was proven that they are faternal twins not maternal twins. they are just regular brothers...either whole or half, but not identical twins. so they do not share the exact jeans or genes or jeens or geens or cheens. well enough of the jokes. aaron's dna is different from the rapist.

News Editor Jill Stewart responds:
Thanks to Recordstraight, commenting above, in correcting the timing and circumstances surrounding the $3.4 million warrant issued by the courts shortly before he bolted and was killed. We got that information from the Columbus TV reports, which were indeed inaccurate. To the friends who have been commenting above, please let me know who the LA Weekly can interview about Mr. Bynum. We would like to understand how this could have happened, and what he was like. It seems that until his death, he was popular and even beloved. Please email me at jstewart@laweekly.com.

I as well knew Abrahm or who I thought he was, we met approximately 6 months ago and had been seeing each other casually. During the time I was around him, he never tried any type of sexual advances towards me. I was shocked to hear of this incident, because I had just talked to him an hour before the chase and he acted as if all was well. I live in Central Ohio where a lot of his family is. I've been so baffled as to what to believe. I don't know whether to be mad at him or sad for his death. Either way I'm sorry for his families loss. Abrahm had told me his wife and him were having problems and that was the only reason I was even considering a relationship with him. He told me he loved me daily and even wanted me to go back to LA with him. Again I don't know if this was a case of a man who lived a double life. But I myself am thoroughly distraught. The man that I knew and cared for was kind, soft spoken, and always wanted to know what he could do for me to make me feel better. From what I knew of him he was a good man. I clearly could've been a fool as well. I guess I will never know...

I worked with Abram years ago. I am still in shock to think that he could possibly have committed these crimes. He was one of the sweetest, most mild-mannered men I've ever met. I knew his twin brother briefly and also wondered if there could have been an identity mistake between them, though I don't mean to blatantly accuse Aaron. I can't imagine what could have happened to create such a change in personality.

I'm doubly creeped-out, b/c unknowingly, I worked in Palmdale and Lancaster when the rapes occurred. I didn't even know Abram lived there then, since I had only known him in Ohio.

Incidentally, living back in OH now, I was stuck in the traffic created by the wreck. So strange how place and time can match up so perfectly...

My prayers to his family and to the truck driver whom was hit, as well as to all of the families of the rape/kidnapping victims, whether this man committed them or not.

I worked with abram at a warehouse in the antelope valley and i never suspected him to be that way. this shows you never really know anyone. He was a cool person to me but all i seen was the guy that walked through the warehouse doors everyday. I didnt know what went on behind closed doors you know

having known abram since his move to ohio in 1988 i would not of expected him of being a rapist only because him and his brother never had any trouble with woman they were always persuing him and he always had a date his woman were happy that i noticed and he doesn't strike me as a guy that would do that sort of thing.you would think that a rapist would be some loner who blended into his suroundings, not a guy who liked attention.as for the shooting columbus is not a place for black men and altercations with the police.bynum had a record here both in the courts and with officers, not trying to excuse what they did but i understand the circumstances.they considered it a hostile situation given his background.but knowing abram i don't think he wanted to face the disgrace in the eyes of his peers and to the people he cared about.and to his family i am sorry for your loss, and to aaron remember your brother for who he was a talented musician,a good friend, and funny as hell.

The Two-Time Victim Of Bynum says:

I was one of his victims in High Desert area in 2004 & again in 2005. He broke into my home. A Lancaster Sheriff female detective came to "question" me about it. She was very harsh, made me go in a room/office in my home, not allowing my mom to be with me while she proceeded to basically accuse me of letting this man in. Her reason: "No Sign of Forced Entry". She then asked if I always dressed the way I did (which was just a summer dress with snaps just above my knees) which suggested some blame on my part in my own home..?? Then she went on to advise me of statistics; that about 80 something to 90% of women know the person who raped them. Grilling me hard, she stated that I must have let him in even when I kept telling her I always keep the door locked, deadbolt and all! I even had a locksmith out here soon after to prove her wrong about the "No Sign of Forced Entry"! He said the deadbolt was defective and someone could get in very easily, so he replaced all locks on doors. I called her ASAP to inform her of this and she only said she would put that in her file; her tone was as if she didn't care at all. Still she didn't take me serious. She did not believe me, which is why most women are reluctant to report rapes! I couldn't believe it. Finally, I couldn't take her wrongful interrogation of me any longer and insisted she leave my home now! When she was outside she asked my mother why I was so hostile. She should know anger and hostility are symptoms of Rape Trauma Syndrome, especially since she specializes in rape cases. Obviously she hasn't been very well trained in that area. What business does she have being a detective assigned to rape cases? So the Lancaster Sheriff Department claims she did nothing wrong; that she followed "NORMAL" procedures. That is not normal and they should be trained properly in dealing with rape victims. If she would have taken me more seriously that day in June 2004 and really did her job properly, the 4 or so girls (I believe teens) who were raped and/or beaten, which occurred after me, might not have been assaulted and spared from this trauma! I filed a complaint against that detective, to no avail, because we all know how police stick together. I tried everything for her to be disciplined or at least have training for them on how to deal with victims in an appropriate manner instead of accusatory. Unbelievable, they all said she did nothing wrong! I even confronted her at the station and I looked into her eyes, asked her about the things she said to me in interrogation and she straight-up denied it to my face. There is something definitely wrong and needs to be changed. Very sad to be victimized a second time by the people you think are there to "protect" you. Also, they blew me off when I called both her and the Lieutenant in charge of her, never kept me updated, never was in the office supposedly and never returned my messages....
