UPDATE with photo of LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus. Accused of murder, she was featured in LA Weekly People Issue

Weird happenings in our grim, big city: Accused Los Angeles Police Department detective Stephanie Lazarus, who police today said killed Sherri Rae Rasmussen, the wife of her lover, and got away with it for more than two decades until getting tripped up by a DNA test, was featured this year in LA Weekly's popular April 23 People Issue.

In the Weekly profile of LAPD cop Don Hrycyk by writer Mark Groubert, Lazarus is described as an art expert and ringer for Tyne Daly:

Alongside Hrycyk is protégée Stephanie Lazarus, a 25-year veteran of the force and a serious Tyne Daly look-alike à la Cagney & Lacey. This mother of a 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter has been working alongside her mentor for the past three years. I ask if she knows anything about art. "Hangs on the wall," she shoots back jokingly. "After working here and seeing all the phony art, I said, 'I can do that.'"

So she started taking oil-painting classes.

"I've been to Florence several times," she adds on a more serious note. "I started to love art when I went to Europe at 18."

Police are holding a press conference right now to provide further details on this 1986 cold case murder. This is a shocker.

A shock? This should come as no surprise. There are good cops; there are bad cops. Just because you have a badge and a gun doesn't mean you are an angel. She is not the first cop to be charged with murder; she won't be the last.

Woah. Looks like she went to Simi High, unless there's another 49yr. old Stephanie Lazarus in SoCal.

Kim Jones says:

The only thing stolen from the home at the time of the attack was the marriage license. Apparently, the struggle lasted for quite a long time, more than an opportunistic robbery, but more like a personal grudge-type situation. Yet the police at the time did not bother to check into the husband's ex-girlfriend history, maybe because the ex-girlfriend was a cop. Now all the cases Lazarus has overseen or been involved in in the last 20 years are to be reviewed.

From News Editor Jill Stewart:
Thanks for your comments. We like to make note of the victims in notorious murder cases, which too often get tagged with the name of the alleged killer -- and the victim is forgotten. Please check this blog site, LA Daily, for Christine Pelisek's post on Friday night, June 5, 2009, about victim Sherri Rae Rasmussen. She was a critical care nurse in Glendale when she was murdered. And thanks to our friends at KNX 1070 Newsradio for supplying us with family photos of Sherri Rasmussen.

Disgusted says:

Wow what a bitch is right for doing that to the mans wife!!! I hate to say this but she may be a bit of a sociopathic personality.Look at Drew Petersen He can sleep like a baby. The arrogance of her to walk around protecting and serving. Did she ever think about the womans face while she was beating her and took her life with a gun What bitch is all I can say!
Why didn't she diect her anger to the guy.

Did she sleep soundly for over two decades or was there even one night that was haunted by the pain of her family? This is just creepy. There are many good hardworking cops so I hope people don't let this ruin their image of the department.

Sometimes that sociopathic personality is so clever they slip throug allot of loop holes!!

Wow,she walked around for over twenty years with this secret. That womans eyes are scary.I thought about this aswell.

If she isn't without conscience how did she sleep at night? What I find troubling is she beat her before hand before shooring her. Thats cold blooded no matter how you look at it!

I saw the victims picture and it makes me sick. She walked into her home to be confronted by a crazy woman sleeping with her husband. If she's found guilty I hop they put her away FOREVER!!

The only other person I've seen with that look and those eye was Charles Manson. I say we should all push for youtube or tv media coverage of her execution. If she doesn't get the death penalty we all need to petition for it! This will set a good example for criminals, bad cops, and everyone else. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!

Stephanie was a friend of my brother some years ago. When my brother died in an accident Stephanie and her family were very kind to us all. We are so sad that Stephanie has been charged with this crime and hope that it is not true. She has only been charged witht his crime not convicted. Remember that folks.

I met her a few times almost 10 years ago, but I still remember her. As soon as I read her name in the news reports I recalled what she looked like and my impressions of her: she was nutty and had intense eyes. Now I know that it's because there was something sinister hiding in there.

I knew her as well. Her nickname within the department was Spazerous! She was an ok lady, except if the shit hit the fan, she would spaz out. Man, never in my wildess dreams would I suspect her of this. Yep, those eyes were kind of freaky. Anyways, remember she is only charged, not convicted.

Tiffany says:

It cracks me up everyone always thinks cops aren't human. They don't walk on water. EVERYONE has the potential to murder under the right curcustances, even the church lady.

I must admit her eyes are really creepy.I saw that interview with her a few years back in her uniform and her eyes are shifting around. Eyes say ALLOT about ones mental, emotional state. You can KINDA tell something isn't full there AND she got a nickname in the department as 'Spaz" something. Thats fitting and speaks volumes.

It's to bad she ruined her life with a very stupid choice when she was young but we all do stupid things. If found guilty she'll pay dearly I'm sure. She seems to have become a good cop later in life making alllot of good causes for organizations. Her and her family get my prayers. She needs prayers too ,so she can come to some kind of revelation about this for her soul(if it was her)The only thing that would disturb me is if she hadn't felt anything about this over the past two decades. If she was haunted about this at times thats a good sign,if not the she's a cold blooded sociopath.

janet says:

Scary and disconcerting but typical that now that this woman is accused of murder, people who until now saw her eyes as sincere and intense in a good way now see in them Charles Manson's eyes and swear they can "see" the "eyes of a murderer." The power of suggestion and groupthink.

In fact if you were asked to choose between her and the man at the easel WITHOUT reading the background, you'd say it was him -- look at THOSE eyes. But instead everyone ignores his as the eyes of a brooding artist seeing deeply into things that regular people don't kind of stuff. Her fact looks pleasant by comparision. (The Tyne Daly connection, I don't know who that's supposed to flatter -- seen her lately? Though she actually looks better now with short white, spiked hair than in her middle-aged phase when she looked like Spazerius.)

I suspect the DNA and other evidence is pretty damning or the cops wouldn't have gone public with this. But there's nothing in the eyes that says she's inhuman, and a crime of passion isn't a pre-meditated murder of strangers like the Manson thing, don't even go there. It sounds stupid and a sign she was temporarily insane that she'd have taken just the marriage license, not even tried to make it look like a robbery when as a cop she'd have known that would have covered it up better.

I don't think any of you have the right to convict her just yet. As for the eyes comments - c'mon guys.....she is a police officer not a high fashion model!!!
You have to know Stephanie and I do. I would vouch for her anyday. She is a good person. I would trust my children with her anyday!! No one knows the circumstances or what really happened.

Kimmy says:

She doesn't look like a serial killer. She will be punished for this crime. I think her eyes look like that because she probably hasn't slept in two decades. She knew that there is no statue of limitations on murder. I bet she replayed it every day in her mind.

Brnmar says:

I don't know why anyone is suprised by this case. More murders have been committed by members of the police department than any other profession in America. All over our country cops have been killing people outside of their regular duty.

Joe says:

The DNA matches, the circumstances match, so she's guilty. So all of you imbecile asses who are saying she's so good and such a nice wonderful person and innocent can go phuck yourselves. Cops are pigs...they are all liars, and they are all of low IQ which predisposes them to crime. They are too stupid to get a normal job. They are in it for power, because their low intellects prevent them from getting it any other way. This kuhnt needs to be beaten severely, for several days, and then simultaneously hung by the neck and shot in the belly multiple times. And yes, her psycho eyes are a dead giveaway of her criminal psychopathy.

Mark says:

I am not an American and I do not live in the USA but to judge people from a simple photo you cannot be more than a moron. This is a tragic situation and a crime of passion. Her colleagues had the courage and the guts to investigate her and keep it concealed all the time. I hope that justice will take its course and she pays for what she did but not with the death penalty. I'm a European and if we accuse Iran of being an inhumane state and we western powers send people to the gallows then we better not point any finger at all. I hope that the family of the victim will finally find some rest.

To Louise of the 6/5 comments ~ She may have killed your brother, You'd better check to see if she was any where in the vacinity when your brother died in that car accident. To Elaine of the 6/7 comment ~ Vouche for her anyday, huh? Well, well, well......You just better hope she never ends up in a relationship with one of your kids. P.S. We do know that a beautiful & talented nurse was murdered. You need your brain checked! To Joe of the 6/9 comment. I like you and we could hang out any day! Can you say call the FIRING SQUADE? This is another example of why we needed Chief Darryl Gates OUT!

Susie says:

Any person who is so angry and jealous that they resort to repeatedly biting another human being and then taking out a pistol and killing that person should be executed. It is true, she hasn't been convicted; however, we all know that she is guilty ... dna doesn't 'fib' ... it is an accurate and telling technology ... telling the final truth about the frightening event causing the cruel murder of a seemingly perfectly normal and nice lady. This murderer simply has close set eyes ... having nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that she is clearly a sociopath who should not be free to perhaps become enraged over some other event and behaving in a likewise manner. It is appropriate under certain circumstances to execute a person ... as barbaric as it seems ... yet, I can't think of a more appropriate reason to do so. She doesn't deserve to be alive.

Let's not forget Sheri. I knew her when she worked at UCLA Medical Center. She was a wonderful and caring nurse and decent human being. Her murder was a horrifying shock. The world was diminished by her death.
If this woman did indeed beat, bite, and shoot her, then she deserves all that justice can serve.

A real shock to me. I grew up with Stephanie. Went to school with her. She was always a good kid: A-B student, active in sports, always cheerful. Knew her mother and sister well too.

frank says:

Reality. Quiet Joe. Stop calling people asses. What are you a control freak or a dictator of intolerance? She's guilty, period. DNA does not lie and she had the motive of jealousy and hate, opportunity and the cold heart. In my mind I have convicted her regardless of formality. Her life is basically over which is sad for her 2 yr. old and anyone who may love her. A cell is no place to be for even one hour much less the rest of your life.OJ is a living example of misery as he sits in Lovelock Prison in Nevada. The cops finally did the job that Gates did not. Still, most murders are not solved. Try and enjoy the day and be more tolerant and forgiving and think often of God.

Usioumo says:

Police arrogance, anyone? Some LAPD dicks that posted here have got to be joking. Or somebody is sociopathic themself or else completely naive! Sure! Right! Officer Lazarus merely used "Lawful lethal force" to "subdue an assailant". You can't be serious! Let's see. Romantically scorned two year beat cop, Officer Lazarus, was an armed and unwanted intruder in the residence of her romantic rival, who was a highly educated medical director with a regional hospital. An "assailant" who Officer Lazarus had previously openly threatened. As Officer Lazarus fought with and beat up this "assailant" while sustaining little damage herself, she needed to bite the "assailant" right on the ta ta's. And then she needed to pump at least three shots into that unarmed "assailant" in order to "finally subdue" her. However, Officer Lazarus also needed to remove the marriage certificate of her ex-lover and the victim from the crime scene! There's somebody around here that is not real! And all some others can say is that it's very damn obvious that someone is real concerned about something, and it's NOT truth and justice! Sure LAPD Detective Lazarus should, and will, get her "due process". But LAPD Detective S. Lazarus is as guilty as sin of capital murder in the commission of a felony. But some "Hollywood types" must live completely over the edge all the time! Detective Lazarus had the motive, the opportunity, the means, and additionally she has "the profile". And besides the overwhelming evidence in this case, one of the first things any self respecting Eastern "big city" detective would notice was the "crazy eyes". But maybe, since nuts is "normal" in L.A., somebody else wouldn't. And that Lazarus had convinced herself that she would never get nailed!

"I doubt if it was premeditated. Probably an argument which turned violent" Josey you're an idiot!

She shouldn't even have been in her house for an arguement to even transpire!!!! Yes it was premeditated big time. She may have been a good well behaved kid but as a women scorned with rejection issues she was fukkin nuts and relentless we never really know someone, what she did was COLD BLOODED!!

I really love how casual these people are about this.Yeah,an arguement after she BROKE into her condo.YEAH, LIKE GET THE FUKK OUT OF MY HOUSE YOU CRAZY CRIMINAL WITH A BADGE!! Thats as far as that arguement is going! You do know this is illegal just to break into someones house, most people wouldn't consider this an arguement. What even gives her the right to break and enter into her home and start an arguement in the first place. The victim was probably screaming for her life! Reality check!

I may turnout that the two females got into a fight after the victim showed the pepatrator the marriage license to show that the ex and she are married. Might be the reason she did not go to work. The victim latter confronted the spouse about perhaps a still on going affair and he.......... or the victim was truly kill by burgalars after the cat fight...... what timing that would have been. In all cases everyone is a loser here!

I might turn out the two had a catfight because the victim showed the perpetrator the marriage license and she did take it from her. Could be that’s why she did not go the work that day. Perhaps latter that day the victim confront the spouse about perhaps about a still ongoing affair with the alleged perpetrator and he......... or she was truly killed by burglars’ what timing that would have been. I guess we will see what line the defense will be. This is a great tragedy and everyone is a loser here.

The original Detectives belong in jail as well. Their SHODDY and incopetent police work along with their callous treatment of the victim's family are enough for these "retired" scumbags to be in jail with her. Darryl Gates is also to blame, he as head of the LAPD in the 80's (for those of us who remember him) was a huge crook, liar and arrogant SOB who let many cops get away with murder. The only shocking thing here is that Det Lazarus was straight. She looks like a truck driver. Nothing stinks worse than a dirty cop and the cops that protect her. THE ONLY people to feel sorry for here are Sherri's family. I don't blame them one bit for being angry at the original Detectives. ANYONE who supports Stephanie or shows her support is a MORON.

Traci,

I'm not trying to be a detective and not sure if I read about the gun before or after but I know I did and do not remember if it stated the caliber of the bullet which most probably could be used in many types of guns. I don't know, I do not own a gun. Without the actual murder weapon the caliber I would think would be circumstantial. At this point everything that I have read or heard is circumstantial, even the DNA. They could have had a fight away from the condo, she took the marriage license from Sherri during the fight away from the condo, her gun was actually stolen which happens to be of the same caliber....perhaps by someone close to her at the time and actual used and so on. I am just wondering what the defense is going to be and the way it looks they can cast and argue reasonable doubt unless the actual gun is found trace to her or someone can place her in the general proximity at the time of the murder. I'm sure she will have albeit for that day and may admit to the fight.

Certainly I am not defending her but just wondering what is going to happen during the trial and if others will be charged.

What do you think Traci?

Barry Van Kleeck says:

What a cold-blooded b*tch. To have brutally murdered someone like she did, it is no surprise she looks as she does. Wild-eyed and soul-less. Is this the way all LA police officers are, that they could not read just how cold-blooded someone in their own midst was? I hope she draws the death penalty as a lesson to all that no one is above the law and justice.

Derek, you're the moron. See if you support one of your children if they kill someone. I always reserve hanging someone til after they have been found guilty. Not before!

DGW, Are you one of those naive ,gullable neighbors she made chocolate covered cherries for? What a bunch of dimwits. You guys are to polly anna to know just because someone has this prestine veneer that there can't be a sociopathic personality lurking beneath. BTW I know several peeps who knew her including cops and she showed people what she wanted to show them. She had many masks and wasn't that nice all the time. It's been said by more than one person.

It actually scares me how gullable people can be.

The evidence is overwhelming for godsakes, how can any MORON stick up for this cold blooded killer, unless their a sociopath themselves. Did she think once over the 23 years about this this womans family? What a ugly soul less bitch for doing that to a beautiful promising woman who's only crime was falling in love with and marrying her ex.What a bitch for tarnishing the badge of a police department with some amazing hardworking officers! It's going to come a time when these people with rose colored glasses on are going to have to admit and realize Ms,ultra phoney, soup making, chocolate covered cherry making lady is REALLY a sociopathic heartless cold blooded killer who has hidden a VERY dark sinister, jealous side of her nature for years and fooled many!!

Good morning. Misquotations are the only quotations that are never misquoted.
I am from Turkey and learning to read in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "After promoting tezuka's reaction to help, he plays a kick to cause tezuka's coach."

THX :P, Devi.
