Grim Sleeper Serial Killer Sketch Released

The Los Angeles Police Department released a composite drawing of the Grim Sleeper, a serial killer responsible for the murders of 11 people in South Los Angeles between 1985 and 2007.

The drawing was re-released by the LAPD after 21 years. The killer was described in 1988 by one of his victims as a man in his 20's, between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 inches tall, around 160 pounds, soft-spoken, articulate, with neatly trimmed hair and a pocked-marked face. The sole survivor told the LA Weekly that her attacker was driving a 1970s two-door orange, white-striped Pinto hatchback with tinted windows.

DNA and ballistics evidence connected the killings of 10 women and one man between 1985 and 2007. The killer attacked most of his victim's between 1985 and 1988. After 1988, the Grim Sleeper seemed to stop and didn't commit any known homicides until 2002. He last struck on Jan. 1, 2007 when the body of 25-year-old Janecia Peters was found in an alleyway dumpster along Western Avenue by a homeless man looking for recyclables.

Last February, the LAPD released a 911 tape of a call made by a man who allegedly witnessed the Grim Sleeper dumping the body of Barbara Ware on January 10, 1987 in an alleyway before he drove off in a blue and white 1976 Dodge van. The caller told the dispatcher the van's license plate (1PZP746). The police found the van about 30 minutes later at the now-defunct Cosmopolitan Church at 6075 S. Normandie Ave.

The LA Weekly broke the story in August of 2008 that the Grim Sleeper was on the loose. A week later, the Los City Council issued a $500,000 reward for information leading to the killer's arrest and conviction. Last year, an LAPD sex crimes detective named Diane Webb began looking for the Grim Sleeper in the city's registered sex offenders. Webb didn't find the Grim Sleeper. Instead, she found alleged Westside Rapist John Floyd Thomas. Thomas is believed to be responsible for the murders and rapes of at least 20 elderly white women in Los Angeles dating back to the 1950's.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call detectives at (213) 473-0346 or (877) 527-3247 evenings and weekends.

The heading of this sketch needs to say "from 1988" as a quick glance would make you think you were looking for a match to this sketch now. I think you should also post the 21 year progression drawing also (found here: www.thegrimsleeper.com ) as that might be more on point with what the GS looks like today. That or LAPD should come out with their own computer enhanced sketch (I will check back for that in 21 years...grin). I am glad this site posted the sketch and hope this brings much needed attention to this case and they get him.

Christine- above you say, "The killer was described in 1988 by one of his victims as a man in his 20's, between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 inches tall", but in your Original Sole Survivor Article you say, "From inside, the driver, a black man in his early 30s, asked her if she wanted a ride." 10 years seems to be a big error. Also above you show the Pinto and detail it as "green interior and tan seat covers". In your Sole Survivor article you say, "Margette was impressed by the car’s interior. The gear-shift handle was memorable, pimped out with a ping-pong-sized marble ball. The inside was all-white, with white diamond-patterned upholstery. She liked what she saw.." Also the surviving victim says on AMW video, "white dimond tux seats". I saw that Fox news video just released this same Pinto detail of green interior with tan seats (and understand that is wrong). So did the story and details suddently change or is this an error (can it be corrected? others are using your wrong details posted here). The Devil is in the details...someone likely remembers that car, but only if you have the right details.

"Don't worry lady.
We here at the LAPD will get right on the case in 20 or 30 years. Never fear. We're on the job."
