School Board Saves 2,000 Teachers' Jobs With Fed Money

School Superintendent Ray Cortines and the school board today announced they were saving about 2,000 elementary school teachers' jobs, thanks to federal stimulus money. It sort of reminds one of the finale of Threepenny Opera, when Macheath's bail money arrives to save him from the gallows -- or, as the lyrics put it: "Once the cash is not a problem/Happy endings can take place." Unfortunately, there was not enough cash for happy endings for the remaining 5,000-plus teachers who'd been previously pink slipped. As of now, they stand to be sacked July 1.

Joseph Mailander, on Street Hassle, notes that "In the end, they voted to rescind some utterly rescindable layoff pink-slips to elementary teachers."

The L.A. Times reports on pleas heard by the L.A. Unified School District board to find ways to close its nearly $600 million shortfall without slashing its teaching ranks. Reporter Howard Blume writes that today former school board member Jackie Goldberg addressed the board and lamented her own vote to cut jobs back in the 1990s:

"If I could do it again, I would not have done what I did. I am asking you to be audacious. I am asking you to be irresponsible."

Although I am fan of Jackie, she was not a stellar board member. She just never understood educational policy. She was a better council person.

I think the Board President, Monica Garcia, has neither of those qualities.
As President, she should lead. Instead, she takes her orders from the Mayor and Mr. Cortines.

Please give someone else a shot at leading this Board.....Please.

I wonder which version of 3PO you saw/heard? The German version (with Lotte Lenya singing Jenny) ends with the Royal Messenger coming which includes a royal pardon, a title and money for MacHeath....
I confess I do sometimes hear either the messenger music (when something has been rescued unexpectedly) or Call from the Grave (when I am particularly upset about something that shouldn't have happened.....
If you haven't heard the 1958 version (I was so thankful when it came out on cd), do listen.
But the 'royal' (Feds) messenger is saving them....but as in 3PO, how and why have things gotten as bad as they have?

Alas, I inartfully tried to mix some sources. I chose the quote from the 1976 New York Shakespeare Festival (translated by Ralph Manheim and John Willett), over Guy Stern's translated text of the Lotte Lenya version. In my first blog I was referring to the bank surety mentioned the 1931 Georg Pabst film as a "bribe" -- although, yes, it's correct to say Macheath is reprieved with the arrival of a royal messenger.
