Marcy Winograd to Challenge Jane Harman in CD 36

Today at 4 o'clock Marcy Winograd will announce her second Democratic primary run against Congresswoman Jane Harman. Winograd's event takes place at the entrance to the Venice Pier, which is located near the northern edge of the 36th District. In 2006 Winograd, an English teacher at Crenshaw High School, took on Harman who, at that time, represented everything about a compromised Democratic Party that angered Winograd and her fellow members of the Progressive Democrats of America. Not only had Harman developed a case of Carpal Tunnel from repeatedly rubber-stamping repressive legislation that the Bush administration advanced in the wake of 9/11, but she was a reliable supporter for overseas military action and ticking-bomb-scenario paranoia. She was the mother of intervention.

With a mere three months to run, Winograd pulled in nearly 40 percent of the vote of what should have been an incumbent's cakewalk. Next year, of course, she'll face a different Harman, one who got pushed to the side of intelligence politics by Nancy Pelosi, when the Democrats recaptured the House in 2006, and one who now is fighting an aggressive defense against charges she helped the pro-Israel AIPAC lobby in its efforts to spring two of its agents from federal charges. Harman's phone calls with an AIPAC lobbyist were allegedly intercepted by the Justice Department under the same kind of eavesdropping rules of engagement Harman had cheer-leaded in Congress. Harman has fought back, ironically, on civil liberties grounds. (If they can do this to me . . .)

How a rematch between the two women would play out is far from certain. A Jane Harman cornered will be a far more dangerous creature than the reserved, Barbara Stanwyck figure familiar to her constituents. She would be, one suspects, a thing of claws and teeth, battling to the end to hold onto both her reputation in the AIPAC matter, as well as her coastal seat should Winograd pose an even larger threat than she did in 2006. Another unknown development is the Obama factor. His presidency has had the unforeseeable result of diminishing Pelosi's clout while, to progressives, has not translated into a liberal enough agenda. Would Obama really prefer, then, a Winograd victory, should Harman run again in 2010?

Don't count on Obama to do anything but endorse the incumbent Harman, no matter her politics. In DC, the loyalty to incumbents is greater than to party or ideology (at least among Democrats) - Obama's trying to clear the field for Arlen Specter, fer crissakes!

Harman will get vicious if a challenger gets close, and she's worth $500 million, so she'll be able to get her message out. By the way, did you know that she just voted recently in favor of cutting inheritance taxes as an amendment to the reconciliation bill? Funny, I don't know how many multimillionaires she represents in this district, but it's a tiny fraction of the population.

Nick Antonicello says:

Once again we have ultra liberal Marcy Winograd trying to take take advantage of illegally leaked conversations that are partial in content and scope, when in fact those charges have since been dropped.

Winograd claims to now reside in the district and while residence is not the issue, commitment to the residents you want to represent is certainly suspect.

The fact remains Jane Harman has been an effective member of congress since 1992 when she won the seat and then again in 2000 when she took the seat back again from one-term Republican Steve Kuykendall.

Democrats made a poor choice by not keeping Harman on the Intelligence Committee given the demographics of the district and her strong ties to the aerospace industry. A Winograd candidacy does little for residents of the district other than lose seniority and status for a freshman with no particular skill set that will create jobs or fix the economy.

Ms. Winograd is far to the left of most and presents herself as a peace at all costs candidate. That's a dangerous shift in position given the current state of the economy as well as our continued fight against terrorism and extremism in the Middle East as well our fight to contain extremists in Iraq as well as Iran.

But most troubling is Winograd's indifference to the security of Israel which hangs in the balance as seeks to shift American foreign policy even further to the left.

Based on this near socialist challenge, keeping Jane Harman in Washington as a strong supporter of the President's initiatives makes sense to me.

Jim says:

To Nick A,

I'm guessing you were for Jane Harman's office? Why is Winograd's biggest flaw that she doesn't openly support Israel spying on America?

Jane Harman is a crook that shows her disdain for her constituents by even trying to run again. She was the poster child for ILLEGAL WIRE TAPPING and supported them throughout the Bush years, and when a LEGAL wiretap is put on her, she screams about civil liberties! Jane Harman cared more about fighting a ware against Israel's enemies than preserving American civil liberties.

I hope Winograd wins. I align myself with the conservative movement, and I would rather a left-wing communist in a position of power than a lying crook that campaigns for another country's best interest over her own constituents.

Michelle says:

I totally support Ms. Winograd. I find her honesty and tenacity refreshing. She's willing to speak up for the rights of all people and is not in the pocket of big business and the military-industrial complex like Harmon. We need new reprensentation in Washington to work with the administration, not to undermine it.

Ted Lawrrence says:

Harman has called on the Feds to release the tapes, offering to sign an immunity agreement so she can't sue for a violation of privacy. Since she says it didn't happen and wants the tapes released, why are the charges (which according to the New York Times originated from an official in the Bush administration who was upset about a vote she made in committee) being taken at face value and not treated skeptically. Harman has been the most effective member in promoting the high tech industry and federal funding for jobtraining to support that industry. Her work is worth more than a promise from some woman moving in to our district to promote an agenda.

Stan West says:

I am a huge supporter of Marcy in this fight. Harman votes have made clear she wants to sit on the fence when it comes to spying on Americans and the war in Iraq. She is more concerned about appearing weak with the right wing than she is about the lives of our soldiers. I say no thanks to any Dem who wants to play politics like this. I know Marcy and know for a fact she will not be like this.

Larry Brown says:

Marcy says she does not advocate a 2 state solution in the Middle East and in the light of a couple of dozen Muslim theocracies where you can be put to death just for admitting you are Christian or Jew, she singles out Israel for contempt? I really don't get this. Maybe her group should be called "Jews for Genocide"! Like Madonna who made a career fo defaming the church, something personal is going on with Winograd but unlike Madonna, she wants to make policy for the US.
