The Great McNugget Protest 2009: PETA Takes on Jay Leno

Today, at the entrance of NBC Studios, PETA protestors answered the age-old question, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" They were protesting The Jay Leno Show after a recent McDonald's promotional campaign ruffled the fowls' feathers. The fast food institution has become the focal point of PETA's long-running McCruelty campaign for what the animal-rights group charges, per a recent press release, is "its failure to adopt more humane slaughter methods." Protestors dressed in fluffy chicken costumes held signs that read "McCruelty, I'm hatin' it" and, special for this occasion, "McDonald's Nothing But Cruelty," with NBC's peacock decapitated and turned upside down.

PETA members waved signs up and down South Bob Hope Drive, outside of the studio's audience holding area, while passersby frequently honked with encouragement. The occasional shout of "You're crazy" only made the chickens dance. To six-piece or not to six-piece? We'll let you decide.

Bob says:

Peta may be acting silly about this, but McDonalds really is a huge contributor of problems in this world. By saying your going to eat more McDonalds to offset the lost sales thanks to this picketing then your assuming that people will decide to eat or not to eat McDonalds based on news of these protests.
The real purpose (even though peta does a poor job displaying) is that McDonalds is cruel to their animals. By the way, most of the red meat in this country (excluding grass fed) is run filtered with ammonia... and you sound like an idiot in general, why don't you think before you type any of your thoughts to the world.

Financial priorities. My financial priorities involves farming chickens for sale of eggs and meat for my local neighbors. That is my "financial priority"

As a vegan for 10 years and a life-long vegetarian for 38, I'm always interested in reading the comments in blogs and stories like this.

I'd love to hear some kind of argument against what PETA is doing, and the cause they are representing.

Instead, I read the same drivel that gets posted over and over, talking about "People Eating Tasty Animals" and how commenters are going to go eat some meat after reading about the protest.

It's like eating meat is your religion...or your drug.

I guess the meat has made most of you stupid. That's the only reasonable conclusion I can come to.

Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 7 2009 @ 5:17PM
Abby Foreskin says:

So it sounds like you want us all to be vegans. Now if we were all vegans and didn't eat meat or anything of the such, what happens to all the animals? It's not like the cows and chickens and tasty lambs are going to stop humping. So, what do we do with all these new animals? We let them roam free like deer. They wander onto the highway and get hit like deer. They over-populate and get hunted like deer. Wow, that is a great life for them. Instead of a life of doing nothing except eating and shitting until a minute or two of uncomfortable death, they get a life filled with searching for a dwindling food supply, horrible drivers, and crazy hunters. Bravo animal lover! You should be ashamed.

EricM the issue is simple: Humans are omnivores, and no I don't want to read any propaganda to the contrary. (Stick your fingers in your mouth, those sharp things are called canines. Three guesses why they are there, first two don't count) It does not matter whether or not you think we were created this way or evolved this way. Humans are designed to eat meat. What comes off as crass mocking of the PETA protesters is simply a visceral reaction to the obviously flawed notion of humans going against their evolved/created natures. Sort of like people with Apotemnophilia. You don't have to think about how why it is wrong to have a visceral reaction to the wrongness of it. (look it up)

You guys are idiots, the comments boil down to:

I LOVE EATING CHICKEN. RED HAIR GIRL IS HOT. HORNY COMMENT AND SOME OVERLY MACHO REMARK THROWN IN TO SHOW I'M NOT A PANSY.

SIGNED PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS WHO ALSO QUOTE STUDIES CONDUCTED BY THE BEEF COUNCIL (PETAKILLSANIMALS.COM/FACTS/NOCITATIONS

It's sad that MOST people who are against animal rights never seem to put out their arguments cogently instead relying on some form of the argument I mentioned above. While things like this are more for publicity and I don't agree with it, I think people need to look into where their facts and food come from. I'm not against the meat industry, but just against the way they do farming these days. Factory farming is disgusting and people don't want the guilty conscience of having to worry about the fact that the chicken on their plate was viciously and brutally slaughtered. It's easier to just shrug it off and the people who are trying to draw attention (mind you I hate what PETA resorts to with these stupid spectavcles).

Humans may be omnivores, but there's nothing to suggest that we were active hunters of big game. Humans were never intended to eat meat everyday - no such claims say otherwise. The majority of our diet was to be plants and vegetables and fruit and in some case small rodents. Large game were a rarity and subject for celebrations or rare occasions when they could be hunted.

Today people expect meat everyday, and the sad reality is that is fueling the poor health. How many people could really hunt their own food or even carry out the attack - most would be incapable physically let alone mentally. The truth is that meat isn't going anywhere, but we could definitely do with some laws that ensure proper humane conditions for the animals, proper treatment while alive, enforcement and regulation to prevent steroids and other chemicals from being used, mandatory banning of disfigurement and bioengineering for the purposes of making animals without beaks and anuses etc.

The price of meat would go up if this was done, but the health ramifications would be worth it - obesity would go down since people couldn't afford to eat meat everyday, the health system would be less burdened, the environment would be slightly better off since the scale of production would be less, and the country would be better off for being amongst the first nations to actually give a damn about species besides our own.

The majority of people who protest about anything - be it animal rights or the genocide in Darfur, are just out there to protest for the sake of protesting without actually caring or being knowledgeable. I would never join PETA because of the public's somewhat unjust hatred of it, plus I disagree with how they carry out the msg. Personally I feel they make things infinately difficult for animal rights activists giving us a bad name and completely scarring any efforts.

I can safely say no other cause has been as polarized by the public as animal rights - since something like 90% of the planet eats meat.

PETA needs to be wiped from the planet. They are ANIMALS. They are here for us to EAT. Not to mention the president (or one of the former ones) is a diabetic. How was insulin developed?? Clinical trials on dogs. FFS Being a member of PETA is hypocritical in itself. These people are completely ignorant and blind to the plain truth. They will argue that you can get proteins from soy and whatnot. There are two essential amino acids for healthy growth that you CANNOT get if you dont eat meat. And not to mention soy protein is NOT good for men. A clinical trial showed that some men who eat soy protein vs. real protein had as much as 7 times the estrogen vs. that of a normal female. Get your heads out of you *ss PETA members, and do something worthwhile with your lives.

RusYoak says:

Actually Josseaume most anthropologist would suggest that the megafauna of the Holocene extinction event may have largely suffered from the effects of stone age over hunting. We know from the aboriginal folks of the Americas that large game was always, in fact on their diet. Moreover the Native Americans of the great plains used sophisticated game and land management techniques like controlled burning of the plains grasses and mass herd kills of megafauna like the American Bison. While I agree that the modern American overdoes the red meat intake, and having lived in chicken county in Eastern West Virginia I can agree with the notion that we all need to rethink our meat intake. (can you say "free-range" or "organic") I do take exception to being lumped with folks who want to hump the red-head. And for future content, do a little fact checking.
