Craigslist to De-list Erotic Services

Craigslist, the omnipresent Internet personal sales and services site, is taking down its Erotic

Services listings, following a spate of killings of men and women who had responded to Craigslist ads, reports the Minneapolis City Pages. The last of the present Erotic Services ads will expire in one week. Craigslist will create a new online entity called Adult Services, according to CBS News.

Craigslist suffered a public-relations black eye following the murders, along with mounting allegations by state attorneys general that its Erotic Services comprised an out of control Internet brothel, although not all victims connected with Craiglist had met their killers through Erotic Services. In 2007 Donna Jou, a 19-year-old Rancho Santa Margarita woman, died in West Los Angeles during a date with a man she met on Craigslist. (See L.A. Weekly story.) That same year, a young Minneapolis woman, Katherine Olson, were shot dead responding to an ad placed with Craigslist requesting nanny services. (See earlier story, "Caigslist Declassified.") Other cases include so-called Craigslist Killer Philip Markoff, a Boston University medical student.

The main differences between Craigslist's old and new sex-themed listings is that Adult Services ads will cost $10, will be vetted by Craigslist employees and will not accept nude photographs.

Frank says:

I actually participated in search for Donna Jou while her fate was not clear. While it is very painful for family and friends to lose a loved one I have to admit restriction on craigslist is not the answer at least not the way it is described here. Do not forget Donna Jou and Katherine Olson did not have an ad in Erotic services section of craigslist. Donna had an ad as math tutor and Katherine had an ad for baby sitting. In fact when there is an erotic section those who are looking for such contacts would not spill over to other sections to look for it. And do not forget these perpetrators were cut just because they were traced through craigslist otherwise thousands of crimes go unsolved every day and those who commit these crimes go unpunished.

Thanks for pointing out that Donna Jou and Katherine Olson had not been connected with Erotic Services ads. I had meant to underline that fact more clearly in my original post.

Reza Jou says:

Thank you Frank for clarification about my daughter, Donna Jou.

Donna is/was a simple, loving, giving person, an intelligent, artistic, hard working, and ambitious college girl. She trusted people and made a decision based on her trusting nature. It was a decision made out of naïveté but it was well intentioned.
She is/was a selflessness, kindness, generosity, and big heart. She worked as a volunteer in Battered Women Shelters and participated in other charitable works she came to love. She wants to be a physician and promised to be my personal doctor in my old age.

She was tutoring mathematics during her last two years of high school, donated many hours of her time to help her fellow students.
Donna worked full time as a volunteer in St. John Hospital's Pathology Laboratories under direction of Dr. Moore, summer 2005.
During her senior year in High School, she took a course named "Independent Study Mentorship (ISM)" Under direction of her mentor NASA senior scientist, she studied Neurophysiology, Vestibular System, Spaceflight negative effects on astronauts' balance upon their return to Earth. This was at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas.
Donna was admitted to the NASA's Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program or “SHARP” for Summer 2006.
Donna graduated form High School in May 2006, GPA 4.4, SAT scores of 1,570 out of 1,600.

She went to San Diego State University, planning to satisfy her pre-med requirements in 3 years and to attend Harvard or Johns Hopkins Medical School. She wants to be a neurosurgeon.
Donna completed her freshman year, was a straight “A” student and made it to the Dean’s List. I was always so proud of her accomplishments.

I was also very involved in her day-to-day life. We exchanged e-mails regularly and spoke daily; she used to call me every evening to wish me good night.

The chief reason why craigslist has gotten such a bad rap is because the media -- as usual -- didn't do their job in contextualizing the facts, opting instead to sensationalize them.

Add to the putrid mix opportunistic attorneys and law enforcement personnel and the result is the dishonest, ugly circus we've seen, in which people's horrific tragedies are used to help sell ads and propel careers.
