Mike Menza, L.A. Weekly Circulation Director -- "Our Secret Weapon"

The L.A. Weekly took a blow where it hurts this week with the loss of Mike Menza, the longtime circulation director for this paper and our sister publication, the O.C. Weekly. Mike, who passed away last night after battling cancer, had been at the L.A. Weekly for more than 19 years. He was a sparkplug of a man -- quiet and reliable, and displaying an encyclopedic knowledge of where every one of both Weeklys' thousands of bundles of papers went, how well they moved in each venue and what kind of return rate on unread issues we could expect --  from the chaotic lobby of a Hollywood record store to a lonely news rack near City Hall.

Menza led a tireless staff in one of publishing's crucial but little-known fields, one requiring physical stamina, intimate demographic intelligence and a head for quick calculation. His efforts guaranteed an extremely low rate of return for L.A. Weekly issues -- 2 to 4 percent, versus an industry average of 8 to 12 percent among alternative newspapers and 35 percent for magazines.

"Mike was our secret weapon," LA Weekly editor-in-chief Laurie Ochoa said. "One of the big reasons we're still alive and kicking, even this economy, is Mike's genius at knowing exactly where we need to be on the streets -- and how to keep readers hungry for the paper. He kept a wait list of places that wanted to stock the paper, and if he saw too many returns at a particular location, he'd pull the papers without mercy and put them where he knew they'd disappear fast."

"In the seven years I've been with the company," said L.A. & O.C. Weekly group publisher Beth Sestanovich, "we always had 100-percent accuracy in our audits thanks to Mike, no matter what company we worked with. I don't know very many companies that can claim that. I always thought that was extraordinary."

It was a tribute to Mike's selfless personality that very few of us guessed the status of his health.

"Mike's way was one of being a very quiet soldier," wrote Sestanovich in a company-wide email.  "He forged on doing his job regardless of the fact that he was in a fight for his life."

Thanks for everything, Mike -- we'll miss you.

It's just too hard to describe how wonderful this guy was. He was a friend, a teammate, an amazing coworker. This is very hard. Generous, kind, decent, not too many like him. And for his friends and family, an indescribable loss.

I met Mike when I was about 10, 37 years ago.... In addition to the wonderful comments above, Mike was one of the hottest sax players around. From the early day of practicing in my cousins Downers Grove, IL basement, through Aureus and to his latest film and ad work, Mike was a gem. Best of all, he was one of the kindest souls you will ever have met. Mike, Connie & I are really gonna miss you...

I'm so glad somebody mentioned his uber rad sax playing. I loved shooting the shit with him about jazz-bands, albums, gigs and Chicago. He was an awesome guy.

Melissa Reaves-Wagner says:

Mike was one of the people you were just glad he was on the planet. I was the Ad Director and worked with him to launch OC Weekly back in 95. He knew exactly what to do out of the gate. We also played on the LA Weekly softball team together. More belly laughs than a human usually experiences in a lifetime could be had in one single softball game followed by a trip to The Formosa. He'll be missed by many forever.

Mike Sigman says:

I loved Mike. He knew exactly how to do his job, and he had this endearing quirk: He was so used to having near-total autonomy that when Leonard Stern bought The Weekly in the mid-'90s and corporate folks from NY tried to give Mike even the slightest direction, he'd always call me and ask, "Do I have to listen to these guys?" Mostly, the answer was "no."

Judy says:

Every Christmas, without fail, Mike would gift me with a box of Frango's from his beloved Chicago's Marshall Field. It was a kind gesture, from a kind man. In addition to being a rock star Circulation Director, he was a top notch jingle writer - we commissioned him to compose a ditty for the Weekly's 20th anniversary. It was memorable, just like Mike. I cannot imagine the depth of his family's grief and I hope they find some comfort in the knowledge that their beloved brother, uncle and son was a man who was respected and cared for by all who knew him.

Words can not describe the loss that I feel of my best friend, musician, teammate and longtime roommate. His companionship will always be one of my greatest gifts in my life. Rest peacefully my friend.

I knew Mike in the mid 80s, when I played drums and sang in his band Aureus. I was shocked to hear this news, and very said. I wish I'd known he was ill, so I could have said "Hi" after many years out of touch. He was a great guy.

I first met Mike when the OC WEEKLY launched. He hired me as a driver for the OC WEEKLY and then helped me score a job at the OC WEEKLY. It was an honor to know Mike, he was the King of Circulation for LA WEEKLY and OC WEEKLY . He loved his music and his sports and his golfing. We had great times at the meatball & ravioli parties. He was a great guy and a great friend. You will be missed by your family and all who knew you Mike. May you rest in peace.

Jeff Miley says:

I worked for Mike as a driver for the past 19 years. He was and a good and fair person to work for, and he totally had the newspaper circulation game down cold. Even more important than that, he was just a fantastic person. Kind, thoughtful, funny, intelligent, hard working. I always enjoyed talking music, composing, computers, and recording with him whenever possible. He is greatly missed by all.

Neal Weiss says:

So many images rush through the mind, from his mastery of circulation to his softball stroke, his love of music, his love of the Sox (if only i could properly express the correct Chicago pronunciation of "Sox" in the written word), and the sheer joy he shared upon hosting the annual Thanksgiving Eve ravioli and meatball extravaganza. I can't even recall how many beers we shared at the Formosa for our post-game "meetings," but those were simple, good times. I don't think there was a kinder man in the world.

Jane Handy says:

I am so sorry we have lost Mike. He 'took me under his wing' when I was a shy little flute player in the St. Procopius College/community orchestra in Illinois. He let me jam with his band, and taught me about the music business. He was a very kind man even as a college student back in the late 60's. I'm glad he had so many friends, kind people, and a good life in LA. Happy trails, Mike.
