Animal Rights Group Targets 'The Jay Leno Show'

Categories: Hollywood, politics

Those pesky, and controversial, animal rights activists at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will dress up as chickens and attempt to protest a taping of The Jay Leno Show tomorrow in Burbank, City News Service reports.

Talk show host Jay Leno

PETA's peeved at Leno for shilling for the fast food giant McDonald's, which PETA claims has failed to adopt more humane chicken slaughter methods.

Leno should use his influence to "benefit the millions of frightened birds who end up as McNuggets," PETA member Amanda Fortino tells City News Service.

Kevin Eubanks, Leno's band leader, just happens to be a vegetarian, but no word if he's planning to dive into the middle of the brewing controversy.

PETA has become a favorite cause of Hollywood celebrities over the years, with such stars as Alec Baldwin and Alicia Silverstone giving them public props.

It's doubtful any major celebrity will take a stand against Leno, but PETA members will arrive in their chicken suits at NBC Studios in Burbank at 3000 W. Alameda Ave. at 2:30 p.m., according to City News Service.

No word yet if Leno will try to turn the protest into one of his famous man-on-the-street gags.

Anyone who has seen Leno eat, knows the corpse-munching comic has a bottomless pit of a gut. If Leno would go vegan (not happening in this lifetime as he is too selfish) thousands of innocent defenseless beings would be spared his ever-hungry corpse-hole. Rock on PeTA!

And yeah, Kevin is a sell-out and won't pursue the issue - but he is always willing to plug his "sexiest veg" award from PeTA.

Selfish pousers rule the airwaves. Get in line ... stand-up straight and salute

How dare Jay Leno exercise his rights and endorse who he wants. Idiots. Yea, PeTA wearing chicken suits is going to make everyone take them seriously.

Who the hexx do these PETA people think they are trying to force anyone into giving up meat or prevent them from supporting another cause just because it is not their own? I am so fed up with PETA and HSUS trying to force us into veganism. They would rather see children be malnourished and people starve than to eat chickens. They would have us think all farmers abuse their livestock. How ridiculous! Why would anyone abuse their investment and means to their making a living? There may be some isolated instances, but the majority of our American farmers and ranchers do an oustanding job of humanely raising our food animals! BOO to PETA and HSUS for pushing people around! Enough!

Dr. Rosset says:

These people who believe that humans do not need the protein from meat to be healthy deny the biological needs of human beings. There are inherent dangers in eating strictly vegan for babies, children and pregnant women. Long term studies show that maintaining a strict vegan diet causes irreversible damage to one's internal organs. It will also affect the ability of the brain to think rationally. This is one of the reasons that many cults restrict the diets of new members so that they can turn them into followers. Do you eat a vegan diet and use vegan products? If so, you may be harming your health and the environment in ways you are unaware. Consider the vast amount of products consumers use and demand that are necessary for the vegan lifestyle - foods containing grains, corn, and soy such as food, personal care products, and household items - and you begin to get an idea of just how widespread the use and consumption of vegan foods and products really is.

Proponents of the vegan diet claim these studies are invalid and that vegans are often healthier than meat eaters, but these suppositions fail to take into account the following factors:
The majority of soy eaten in developed countries such as the U.S. is processed, altered, and highly toxic to our bodies and the earth. The same is true for many grains and corn.
Claims are continually made that Asian people have consumed soy for centuries and enjoy robust health. What is seldom mentioned is the fact that Asian people consume fermented soy (miso and tempeh, for example), and in much smaller quantities than people in developed countries (such as the U.S.).

Human beings need healthy meat to obtain proper nutrition from a clean source grass-fed meat from animals. Traditionally, vegans rely heavily on soy foods to supplement protein in the diet. Research reveals that soy consumption has a negative impact both on human health and the ecosystem. The majority of soy produced is grown with farming methods which use genetic modification, chemical fertilizers, and toxic pesticides. Soy farming is also responsible for the destruction of important pristine lands such as rainforest area in the Amazon.

Another commonly used food in vegan diets is grains. Like soy, the majority of grains produced use farming methods which have a negative impact on the environment. Since the market explosion over the last several decades of vegan and vegetarian foods in food stores, a proliferation of processed soy and grain products requiring packaging materials are now available which also contribute to more garbage and toxins in the environment. Corn is in the same category, and is found in many vegan foods as well as thousands and thousands of other food, household, and personal care products on the market. It could even be construed that anyone not supporting sustainable farming agriculture for production of food, even those who don't eat meat, are directly contributing to the increase of more pollution and destruction to our environment.

Diets void of meat proteins and replete with plant variety proteins are lacking in many nutrients necessary for optimal health. Soy can inhibit absorption of vital nutrients in the body, and can cause or contribute to deficiencies such as Vitamin B. Parents who impose a vegan diet on their growing children are also believed to commit a gross disservice to the health of their offspring. Professor Lindsay Allen of the U.S. Agricultural Research Service stated, "There have been sufficient studies clearly showing that when women avoid all animal foods, their babies are born small, they grow very slowly, and they are developmentally retarded - possibly permanently." Lindsay is particularly pointed toward those who eliminate fats from children's diets such as meat and dairy foods. "If you are talking about feeding young children, pregnant women, and lactating women, I would go so far as to say it is unethical to withhold these foods [animal source foods] during that period of life. There's absolutely no question that it's unethical for parents to bring up their children as strict vegan."

For more information about the health risks associated with eating a vegan diet, read Death by Veganism by Nina Planck from the New York Times.

For more information on the dangers of eating soy, visit the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Research says:

@ Dr. Rossett

I urge you to research "The chine Study" the most comprehensive nutrional study ever conducted.

What this team discovered is completely contrary to what you have referenced. In fact, high protein and animal based diets are the leading causes of diabetes and heart disease.

“People who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease … People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease. These results could not be ignored,” said Dr. Campbell.

In The China Study, Dr. Campbell details the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and also its ability to reduce or reverse the risk or effects of these deadly illnesses. The China Study also examines the source of nutritional confusion produced by powerful lobbies, government entities, and irresponsible scientists.

The China Study is not a diet book. Consumers are bombarded with conflicting messages regarding health and nutrition; the market is flooded with popular titles like The Atkins Diet and The South Beach Diet. The China Study cuts through the haze of misinformation and delivers an insightful message to anyone living with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and those concerned with the effects of aging. Additionally, he challenges the validity of these low-carb fad diets and issues a startling warning to their followers.

“After a long career in research and policy-making, I have decided to step ‘out of the system.’ I have decided to disclose why Americans are so confused,” said Dr. Campbell. “As a taxpayer who foots the bill for research and health policy in America, you deserve to know that many of the common notions you have been told about food, health and disease are wrong.”

“I propose to do nothing less than redefine what we think of as good nutrition. You need to know the truth about food, and why eating the right way can save your life.”

Early in his career as a researcher with MIT and Virginia Tech, Dr. Campbell worked to promote better health by eating more meat, milk and eggs -- “high-quality animal protein … It was an obvious sequel to my own life on the farm and I was happy to believe that the American diet was the best in the world.”

He later was a researcher on a project in the Philippines working with malnourished children. The project became an investigation for Dr. Campbell, as to why so many Filipino children were being diagnosed with liver cancer, predominately an adult disease. The primary goal of the project was to ensure that the children were getting as much protein as possible.

“In this project, however, I uncovered a dark secret. Children who ate the highest protein diets were the ones most likely to get liver cancer...” He began to review other reports from around the world that reflected the findings of his research in the Philippines.

PETA kills says:

Seeing as how PETA has killed every animal brought to it by people who could no longer care for them, I highly doubt they are ethical at all. Their leader is a money hungry hyprocrite who abuses the thick headedness of her followers to control and munipulate them (sounds an awful lot like a cult).

And for the record, I have several friends who work in free range chicken slaughter houses, and chickens are some of the stupidest animals that have ever lived. The peck the f**k out of each other and stick their heads in holes and try to push their way through until they starve to death.

If PETA wants me to stop eating meet, convince the bears and other omnivors to do it and then MAYBE I might listen. Don't count on it.

It is not a "personal choice" when you are eating my friends and you are ruining my world. When you made your "personal choice" did you ask the animal if you could confine, torture, and murder him or her? When you made your "personal choice" did you ask me if I mind all your pollution and devastation? My tax money subsidizes your "personal choice." Just because we personally make selfish choices does not make them "personal choices."

Xian Do says:

To all PETA-People:

If you are all hysterical about what happens to the chickens, just follow the same tactics utilized by others of your like-minded ideology:

Deny that chickens are "viable life-forms" and claim that the men & women in those slaughterhouses are merely performing "abortions".

Hey...I like McNuggets, and I'm simply exercising my Right to Choose!
;-)

Xian Do says:

OR...try this:

Humans have the binocular vision, the canine and incisor teeth, and the gastro-enzymatic digestive processes of carnivores...thus humans are born carnivores.

Many of those who share your ideology claim that homosexuals are born that way and that it is morally reprehensible to demand that they be forced to live as heterosexuals, since they weren't born to be heterosexuals in the first place.

So why is morally wrong to demand that homosexuals, who are (allegedly) born that way, live a heterosexual lifestyle...

...yet insist that it's morally right to demand that carnivores, who are (indisputably) born that way, live a herbivorous lifestyle?

At least be consistent with your bleeding-heart zealotry, would you?

Bob Roberts says:

Have any of you PETA morons ever seen a pack coyotes when they hunt down chickens (or any other animal)? They start tearing the chicken up and eating it while its still alive. They each bite on different parts and tear it to pieces. There is blood and feathers everywhere. I guess nature is so much more "humane" than "humans." Don't you realize that human beings are Omnivores? Have you ever seen videos of chimpanzees when they find monkeys to eat? They tear them to pieces while they're still alive and devour them. I've read all your propaganda to the contrary, and it's nonsense. Our ancestors were hunters and gatherers. I can think of several indigenous people groups that eat mostly meat. The Inuit (seal, walrus, fish, whales, etc.), Native Americans on the Plains (Bison - which is beef, albeit leaner than what we eat), Native Australian peoples, Native peoples of Oceania (they seem to eat about everything), primitive Europeans, etc. Humans had to adapt to survive in ecosystems outside of the rain forests. Animals are not people, but if people are animals, we are in good company because so many animals eat each other.

John.H.M. says:

PETA has no credibilty.

They had a program where they convinced pet owners to turn their pets over to them to be freed into a "preserve", but were actually killing the pets and throwing them in the trash.

As a life long pet owner, I can guarantee that my pets would rather live, play and travel with me than be put to death.

I have raised farm animals, and they too have happy lives, albeit short at times. But the reality is, many animals eat meat. This is how the planet is kept in balance. If you remove the preditors, then the ecosystem colapses.

Peta euthensizes animals that are thrown away, have been torn up, that have no chance in the world. They do it with compassion, because so many people abuse, overpopulate and abandon animals. If you think this is wrong, go to your local shelter and adopt a loving pet.
Compassion shown by humans is returned 100-fold, Be responsible, spay and neuter your pets, and the shelters across the country would not be overwhelmed with the unwanted, abused or abandoned.
Kindness, compassion, reverance for all living creatures makes all of us better people.
Be kind to animals and all living creatures.
