Over the Weekend: Jacuzzi Parties, Animal Collective, David Lynch and Danger Mouse's Dark Night of the Soul, Pro-Gay Marriage Rally in Fresno

While some might argue that the most exciting thing that happened this weekend was Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno" sitting bare-assed on Eminem's face at the MTV Movie Awards, there was more to take in (and take off) in Los Angeles this weekend that didn't involve well-played publicity stunts. Friday night we joined Kevin Roderick of LA Observed to celebrate the news Web site's 6th anniversary at a rooftop party at the Formosa Cafe. The party was packed with varied media types and journalists from across the country and, needless to say, good times were had by all.

Over the weekend, Angelenos said goodbye to May and welcomed June with a jacuzzi party, Animal Collective at the Wiltern, David Lynch and Danger Mouse's Dark Night of the Soul opening at the Michael Kohn Gallery, and the "Meet in the Middle" pro-gay marriage rally in Fresno. Read on for more of what we did and who we saw...

As summer approaches in LA, the nights get warmer, the drinks get cooler and the clothes get looser. This week Cobrasnake photographed a jacuzzi party, Cinespace, and a couple of hot girls in a hotel room. View more photos in the slideshow.

Saturday's Dark Night of the Soul opening at LA's Michael Kohn Gallery, featuring the work of David Lynch, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, wasn't just the hot event ticket of the weekend, it was one of the greatest save's in music history. Read more in Liz Ohanesian's West Coast Sound review,"The Great Music Save: Dark Night of the Soul Opens at Michael Kohn Gallery."

Desperately seeking tickets
Animal Collective returned to Los Angeles for a sold out night at the Wiltern on Friday. The line of fans and those looking for extra tickets stretched down Wilshire Blvd. so we took a walk down towards Denny's and snapped their photos. View more in the Animal Collective slideshow.

Meet in the Middle: Pro-Gay Marriage Rally in Fresno

Meet in the Middle
On Saturday, May 30, gay marriage advocates--straight and gay--from around California drove to Fresno to protest the California Supreme Court's ruling on Proposition 8, which officially banned same sex marriage in the Golden State. The event, called "Meet in the Middle," was organized by the many grassroots groups that have sprung up since Proposition 8 was passed by voters in November. The lead organizer, Robin McGehee, asked the more than 5,000 people who attended the rally to knock on doors, talk with their friends and neighbors, and create a new grassroots movement to pass a pro-gay marriage ballot measure in 2010. Some of the speakers included Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, longtime gay rights activist Cleve Jones, the Rev. Eric Lee, and, of course, Robin McGehee, a mother of two children who's married to her lesbian wife and lives in Fresno. When the day was over, McGehee, who challenged President Barack Obama to stand up publicly for the rights of gays and lesbians, had become such an inspiring figure that many people were already considering her the new face of the gay rights movement in California. View more photos in Patrick Range McDonald's "Meet in the Middle" slideshow.
