Bill Rosendahl drooling over Dianne Feinstein's U.S. Senate Seat

Residents of Bill Rosendahl's 11th City Council District who lamented that their Los Angeles City Councilman's cojones vanished after he won office can rest assured--they've been found.

Rosendahl tells LA Weekly that a really weird City Hall rumor that he's considering a run for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein's seat, should she step down in 2012, is in fact true.  "I care as much about world events as potholes," he tells us. Three factors would decide things: "If I become a force in Southern California and San Diego," and, "if the opportunity viably presents itself," and if he is seen as a "go-to, get-things-done guy."

His governing resume is excessively slim. Under his watch, the extremely troubled Los Angeles City Council has gained a reputation for its poor governance and its extensive oversight failures, including the forest of illegal billboards citywide, and the new, unprecedented proliferation of medicinal pot outlets near L.A. schools and homes.

Although the inveterate name-dropper touts his work on Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 presidential campaign, and he hosted the defunct Adelphia cable talk shows Week in Review and Local Talk, he has little political profile beyond the Westside.

Rosendahl cites as one of his accomplishments the installment of "state-of-the-art parking meters" in Venice, as if it was a major policy initiative. More substantively, he took on popular LAPD Chief William J. Bratton by recently voting for a cop hiring-freeze--leaving many wondering why he suddenly appeared to be a tough guy.

Now, maybe, they may have have an answer.

marcia says:

Ah-ha, so that's why he suddenly decided to take on Bratton. After hosting a town hall meeting in December where he helped get westside residents worked up against Bratton's statement that he had to move some cops out of westside bureaus AND other ones in order to staff the two new stations (Koreatown and West Valley) and keep cops "on the dots" of the worst gang hotspots -- he then voted with Parks and Smith on the council to refuse to spend the "trash fee hikes for cops" for cops as promised to homeowners by the Mayor, Bratton and Council including HIM when our trash fees were tripled. But instead of seeing himself for what he is, an inconsistent turncoat ("the flip-flopper" as he's known) he got all passionate and tried to turn himself into some sort of hero for opposing "the man."

Sorry Bill, but the two guys you joined forces with are the ones defrauding the taxpayers -- swiping money promised for one thing into a mismanaged general fund is NOT acting on principle, but justifying lying to the taxpayers and just plain incompetence.

The other "accomplishment," raising parking meter rates by 3 or 4X to $4.00/ hour in some places, just hurts small business and drives them to the mall. Remember how you flip-flopped on Pico-Olympic after doing photo ops with the Mayors of Beverly Hills and L A's Villaraigosa, because some constituents came to the Transportation Committee falsely claiming they hadn't been heard, and you wanted them to like you so you changed your mind? Well one main objection was that banning parking on the street an extra hour during rush hour to speed traffic would hurt small business. But what's really hurting them more is raising parking fees and parking fines so much at all times that customers are driven to malls. Haven't revisited that issue though, from what I see.

What about forcing the LAX-area hotels to pay living wage to their workers to pander to the SEIU union (planning on a run for higher office already then?) but giving L A a rep for being unfair to business, and inviting a lawsuit. What ever happened to that suit against the city (arguing they were singled out)?

And now flip-flopping on the support for the poor and downtrodden of Venice that you ran on, in favor of just another stiffer law forcing the homeless in vans to move out of your district. But that doesn't solve the underlying problems -- kind of heartless for an old hippie who ran on championing the poor, and does it when it doesn't affect him?

Point is consistency and following through with the consequences of your feel-good ideas BEFORE you open your mouth: it does no good to just play to the rafters and change your mind.

Jack Humphreville says:

Bill talks a good game, smiles a bunch, but he always votes against the DWP Rate Payers, whether on the misleading Rate Increases or the Rate Restructuring Plan. Remember his grandstanding with the broken power line in front of the Council. Remember his one sided performance at the Venice Neighborhood Council when he sat at the head table lobbing cream puffs at David Nahai? All the Rate Increase is going to the infrastructure! But has he followed up on that claim to see if it is true?

As for Measure B, he voted to put it on the ballot without any analysis. Then he told disbelieving Neighborhood Council members who were at a DWP budget presentation that he was undecided (you could hear the laughing in the background), but ended up voting for B and his union supporters without any consideration that the process stunk or any idea as to the economics or the impact on the Rate Payers.

A better understanding of the facts and figures would be advisable.

misterbee says:

Oh please! Smilin' Bill, the man of the Iron Whim? Senator? Um, higher office is for those who have fixed the problems they were elected to solve. Not for gladhanding opportunistic weathervanes. Get back to work, Bill.

Nick Antonicello says:

Well, at least no one can say Bill Rosendahl is in it for the money. As a US Senator, he'll take a pay cut.

Nick Antonicello says:

Well, no one could ever accuse old Bill for being financially greedy. Leaving the LA City Council for a seat in the US Senate is a pay cut.

Karen Kanter says:

As a constituent, I think Rosendahl IS the real deal. Is he perfect? No, but the bottom line is: he really, really wants to do the right thing AND he wants to represent the majority of his constituency. He is smart, he is open, he wants good things for people and he hasn't been bought.

And the problem is?????????

Janet Brown says:

Before Bill Rosendahl thinks -- even considers -- a seat of Dianne Feinstein's, he needs to take care of his District right here in Los Angeles. There are many of us with issues who have been waiting years for action.
I would be angry if he moves ahead without completing his work at hand.

Twenty years in Venice says:

Smilin Bill has truly earned his moniker. Misterbee is right on target. I can only conclude Smilin Bill actually believes his own smoke and mirrors propagandized dribble and is therefore delusional with respect to even remotely entertaining a run for the U.S. Senate. Honestly, I find it laughable.

Smilin Bill has told the Venice community repeatedly he is "conflicted" on how to deal with the public health crisis of the homeless in Venice. It's simple Bill, property owners who pay taxes get priority, not panhandling, substance abusers, and so-called free spirits who pay no taxes. Diane and Barbara our senators understand that, but Bill remains conflicted.

What would Bill do with North Korea, sent them daisy's for their guns barrels? Oh please, I'm in tears laughing so hard, poor Bill is not spineless, he's boneless!
