Smith Waives Public Hearing, Trutanich's Pot Ordinance Moves to City Council

Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith, who chairs the council's Public Safety Committee, has waived a public hearing for L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich's draft ordinance on medical marijuana dispensary regulations. Smith hopes the matter will be heard before the full city council in early November, according to Smith's spokesman Matt Myerhoff.

"In Councilman Smith's estimation," Myerhoff writes in a prepared statement, "the ordinance could wipe out the 400 pot shops that opened during the moratorium, and could wipe out many of the 176 other ones" that registered with the city before the August, 2007, medical marijuana dispensary moratorium.

Today, medical marijuana advocates are gathering at City Hall to protest Trutanich's and L.A. County District Attorney Steve Cooley's positions on existing medical marijuana dispensaries in L.A., which the prosecutors have deemed as "100 percent illegal."

"Cooley and Trutanich are re-creating reefer madness and are out of step with the will of the people," writes Dege Coutee, a leading medical marijuana advocate, in a press release. "We want acceptable rules not raids. Los Angeles has created a dangerous situation and patients want to let our officials know that."

Trutanich is now working hard to generate community support for his draft ordinance. In a recent email to neighborhood activists, special assistant city attorney Jane Usher wrote that "marijuana advocates" who are only looking to make a buck from medical pot shops have turned out "in force" at city council hearings.

Usher writes that it's "critical that you and your neighbors be heard. The downside risk is too great that this city will continue to be the lawless Wild West for unregulated marijuana shops and their attendant crime and social ills."

Remember kids, Creator made man, man made religion and religion made the drug war, so don't blame Creator because of man's religious mandates, which is of course and always has been to legislate morality.

Steve Elliott ~alapoet~ says:

I hope Trutanich and Cooley read the polls that came out this week.

77% want the dispensaries regulated, not eliminated.

These clowns will get voted out of office next election.

Trutanich is shown himself to be just another lying politician.

He actively courted the medical marijuana community during his candidacy, promised a 'legal safe access and safe regulation' position, happily requested and raked in their campaign donations, and gladly filled his phone banks with their help.

Then once in office, having profited from their support, he turns on a thin dime.

What does that say about the character of the city's new top 'moral cop'?

Which was the lie? His position before the election or his reversal now?

right on, 10:10: that utter lack of character and callous intent to use people he plans to throw under the bus all along (whether it's the medical cannabis community, Controllers Laura Chick and Greuel, the gang intervention "compassionate" treatment of youth advocates, etc.) should really, really bother ANYONE.

This guy is showing himself to be exactly what he's been his whole professional career, that the media helped him with perpetuate this deceit on the public because of their wanting to stymie the Mayor and saddle him with some rightwing enemy, is a disgrace.

We now have a dysfunctional City Hall with this goon not only seeking to humiliate the mayor and citizens at every turn and harass business and LAPD, but also threatening to jail and sue everyone from his boss and alleged clients, city councilmember Perry to the head of Building & Safety to AEG, which provides thousands of jobs. He vowed to sue volunteer members of the planning commission before he even took office, and last week bullied and intimidated a cancer survivor who "dared" question his transparently bogus pretext of using "toxic pot" to close down all shops counter to the ruling of State Atty General Jerry Brown and the courts.

It's not his place to extort money from AEG retroactively, in any case: he's not supposed to set policy or try to take on the job of Controller, mayor, council or other policymakers: then THREATEN to "walk them across the street to my buddy DA's office" if they dare disagree on how to do their jobs.

After abusing the trust, money and manpower of the medical cannabis community he's now reverting to form and trying to SET POLICY with his buddies Republican DA Cooley and Zine, deliberately undermining the will of the people of this city, state and US Atty General Eric Holder.

Getting his flunky/ lapdog Dennis Zine to get the Council to take this matter OUT of the hands of PLUM which had hammered out a near-agreement between Public Safety/ LAPD and the law-abiding shops and patients, is just another ploy to subvert public policy. (Zine's intransigence has been a big reason the council was so stymied so long, along with Rocky's sloppy legal wording.)

Paul Koretz is now on PLUM, authored a bill in Assembly that ensured safe access and made his former town West Hollywood a model. Koretz like FALSEtanich (waronme.blogspot.com) himself was heavily supported by the law-abiding cannabis community, so Trutanich/Cooley/Zine want to marginalize his impact at all costs.

Trutanich and Cooley are accepting bribes from MS13 and other Mexican cartels to reclaim the market back for the smugglers. They aren't crazy or dumb or ideological. They are dangerous criminals who want to subvert public will and recreate prohibition for the cartels. They will not stop until they are stripped of their jobs and prosecuted.

Carl says:

Their the real criminals, and if they think there going to pull a fast one on LA there wrong, we the people know the truths behind marijuana use, and we will no longer let politicians manipulate laws or public opinion for their own advancement. I voted him in, and I will vote him out.

And to the person who made a joke of pot smoking voters, I have many friends who have never voted in their life because they feel every politician is a liar only in it for personal gain, but I sent in the registration form for over 40 of them just to make sure it does get done, and we will be voting, ALL of us!

A very large piece of freedom will be given back to the people in 2010, mark our votes!
