L.A. City Councilwoman Jan Perry Running for Mayor?

Today, the L.A. Times published a flattering day-in-the-life piece on L.A. City Councilwoman Jan Perry, who's been the acting mayor of Los Angeles since Antonio Villaraigosa and City Council President Eric Garcetti have been out of town for the past several days.

The "acting mayor" gig has been a good one for Perry, who's seen herself become the world-wide public face of Los Angeles while she handled all of the craziness that surrounded the Michael Jackson memorial service--Perry was regularly interviewed by CNN, CBS's Early Show, and other major news outlets.

Now, according to the Times, she's "one of a few council members toying with the idea of running for mayor when Villaraigosa ends his second and last term in 2013."

Whoa!  Villaraigosa skips town for a few days, Garcetti follows him, and now Perry's thinking that a permanent stay in the Mayor's Office may be a sweet job after all.  Wonder what Garcetti, who's often mentioned as a possible mayoral candidate, is thinking about this newest development?

But before voters start considering "Perry for Mayor," they may want to read an L.A. Weekly feature story that delves into Perry's finances, among other things. They also may want to check out Tibby Rothman's web exclusive for the Weekly, which goes into the behind-the-scenes handling of the Michael Jackson memorial service and Perry's role in it.

She totally dropped the ball as Acting Mayor, and kudos aren't what she should be getting. The very day before the memorial she told Ch. 7 and other outlets "I have no information about that," and it took news outlets scrambling to find out directly from LAPD (a handful of really good regional Asst. Chiefs it seemed) what was going on. Insofar as LAPD was allowed to divulge details in advance, for security reasons, e.g. they couldn't give away the location of the after-luncheon in Beverly Hills apparently, so that was Twittered and announced live time.

Perry also never thought about the expense (because she had no idea of the magnitute) of the memorial or the funeral either, so was left after the fact pretty-pleasing, "gee, it sure would be nice if the family and AEG and others pitched in." So the Mayor's office came up with the Paypal scheme which has been widely mocked, but it's been reported as piggy-backing on her idea with by a "helpful" mayoral staff with Antonio away.

HOWEVER she doesn't deserve the extent of the venon being heaped on her by the rightwing talk radio that lionizes Zine, Cooley and above all Trutanich for now demanding "to get to the bottom of this," as though they weren't the MOST informed of anyone. Gruel is no longer a decision-maker as Controller, but wrote other officials the day before the memorial asking exactly the questions Trutanich would barge into Council Chambers to ask. And which boarish buffoon Zine has been all over the media with.

Trutanich and Zine deserve just as much of the blame as she does, but Kevin James -- who Trutanich thanked on his show just last night for making his election possible, and where he's a constant guest along with his campaign manager and rest of the Republican machine -- called Perry "stupid, an idiot, a moron, an incompetent," and went on and on, giving her the Antonio- Jack Weiss- Bratton treatment. You know, the one reserved for Democrats. In the end, Kevin James blamed the Mayor of course, calling him "corrupt" because he'd gotten campaign donations from AEG, as had almost the whole council.

But this is also how he and Zine "thanked" Antonio for stepping in and getting private donors - including AEG - to pitch in for the Lakers parade. Taking a page from YOUR article, they decreed that the parade was held just to provide Antonio a Kobe photo op, so it fell into the 89% non-work time and hence, was further evidence for "the Antonio recall file."

WHEN will you people wise up to what low-lifes and opportunistic morons and incompetents (Trutanich is learning on the job at our expense as he tries to cast himself as some sort of savior - he and Zine deserve the word just as much as Perry) Zine, Trutanich & Co are, and letting Perry take all the heat and James/JonKen slime pellets while they snake in for the "glory" is just part of how they always roll?
