Queer Town: Catholic Fall Out Over Proposition 8

While Mormons have been getting the headlines, the Roman Catholic Church has quietly been a major force in the "Yes on 8" campaign to ban same sex marriage in California. Whether or not Proposition 8 is defeated, it seems inevitable that church officials will face some kind of blow back from gay and lesbian Catholics come November 5, if they haven't already.

From bishops releasing an official position paper in support of the ballot measure to printing pro-Prop. 8 literature and distributing it at parishes to offering local priests legal support so they can comfortably talk about banning same sex marriage with parishioners, Catholic officials have been working hard for Proposition 8's passage. This is particularly true in Los Angeles.

Cardinal Roger Mahony, for example, who presides over the Archdiocese of Los Angeles County, which has nearly 4 million practicing Catholics in its territory, has been actively courting Latino voters through radio ads where he speaks to them in Spanish, asking for their "yes" vote.

At West Hollywood's St. Victor Church, Monsignor Jeremiah Murphy, who was appointed to head the parish by Mahony in 2000, has allowed Prop. 8 supporters to set up tables and distribute "Yes on 8" literature, according to the West Hollywood News. (St. Victor, it should be noted, is also known for its good work with the homeless, some of whom are probably homosexual.)

In Fresno, when Father Geoff Farrow came out of the closet and publicly opposed Proposition 8 a few weeks ago, he was relieved of his duties.

Add it all up, it has to make a thinking gay or lesbian Catholic wonder. Why am I still giving money to a church that prints literature in support of laws that discriminate against me? Why am I praying in a church that singles me out as a sinner? Why am I, in the end, contributing to my own second class citizenship?

I know I have asked these questions because I'm gay and Catholic. I haven't practiced in a while, but I grew up directly behind a Catholic church, attended a Catholic grade school, an all-boys Catholic prep school and a Jesuit university, and I was taught by nuns, brothers, and priests. I was baptized and confirmed, and from the time I was a kid through my senior year in high school, I attended mass almost every Sunday. That's about as Catholic as you can get. At the same, I've had feelings for men probably since I was five or six years old, when I first saw the cartoon "Speed Racer" and developed a quick and serious crush on the title character. So that's pretty darn gay, too.

Anyhow, sometimes I'll attend mass with my mother and father because they're my mother and father. I'll sit in church and listen and wish I could go to mass more often. There's something about the Catholic faith, with its emphasis on forgiveness, peace, and love, that I respect and like. And if you've ever read the Sermon on the Mount, as given by Jesus Christ himself, who was always protecting and helping the underdogs of society, that could turn you into a Christian in a second.

But then something like Proposition 8 pops up, with all of the above meanness that follows. At that point, I'm reminded why I don't attend mass anymore. Come Sunday, November 9, five days after Election Day, I wonder how many gays and lesbians will reach the same conclusion. I wonder if Proposition 8 will be the final straw.

Randi Reitan says:

The Jesus who is the center of my faith is weeping as many of the churches and the religious leaders lash out at the gay community with their actions. Jesus came for the outcasts of this world. I don't know how the leaders who are fighting for Yes on Prop 8 reconcile their actions and their hearts when they are making many into outcasts with their work to see Prop 8 passed. They have not learned the lessons that Jesus taught. For me, the sad reality of their fight against the gay community brings great harm to those young people who are just understanding that they are gay. My heart goes out to them most of all. May every gay person know the truth that God loves them and accepts them exactly as they were created. That is the message the churches should be embracing and bringing to the world not the message of discrimination and division.

Rob Merrell says:

It's scary to have the Roman Catholic Church in alliance with the Mormons...politics makes strange bedfellows. As a gay man and someone who has struggled with faith and the traditionalist world view, I now thank God for the Episcopal Bishops of California who have all recognized that the bigger issue here is equality under the law. They prefer to stand with their lesbian and gay parishioners and affirm their right to equal access and trust God to work out the faith issues inside the church community.

Ex-Catholic 30-something says:

This blatant intolerance and bigotry from the leaders in the upper echelons down to the most fundamental parishioners is the reason that I have left the Catholic church. This is not the same church in which I was raised. My church was progressive and stressed equality and social justice. I'm truly embarrassed to be catholic and will likely never return as long as the church is as conservative, bigoted, and exclusive as it is now.

Dan P says:

The spirit of a hate-mongering “Taliban” is alive and well in the hearts of some US churches.

Churches that use their tax-deductable contributions to fund ANY political activities should be CLOSED - and their assets should be seized and liquidated to pay back the taxes they avoided when they perverted religious sacrifice to promote their political agenda. Hate speech, crude bigotry, racism, and child abuse does not serve the public interest, and to the extent that the Mormon and Catholic churches misuse their tax-free contributions, there should be criminal prosecution.

Misguided followers of these cults have a limited right to spew what little may be between their ears - but the use of the tax code to disproportionately advantage hate speech and lie to the public must not be tolerated.

NEVER TOLERATE INTOLERANCE!

the Catholic Church is a deeply diseased institution, sex abuse etc., and I wonder why anyone would trust their spiritual teachings. Mahony is a criminal and I am sick of these frauds hiding behind a cross as they seek to deprive me of my civil rights. To boot, they get to do it tax free. Tombs full of dead men's bones! Liars, frauds and charlartans!

Sylvia Wootton says:

Yes, Jesus' teaching was all about love. But it was also about repentance. We all struggle with things that are wrong...but that does not make them right.
The way our bodies are created clearly indicates what our sexual preference should be. Jesus did not die on the cross so that we would be free to live any way we choose, but that we would be free from the power of the sin and devil . John 8:34 and
1 John 3:8

John says:

This is exactly the reason why I left the Catholic church. After years of dealing with my sexuality in my late teens and early to mid 20s, and two very low moments close enough to attempting suicide, the last thing I need in my life is a church that will keep trying to put me down for something I have no control over. It has been a very difficult struggle, but I'm fine now, and have happily and fully accepted who I am. But I am deeply saddened with the thoughts of other young gay men and women still going through the emotional struggles I went through, in dealing with their sexuality, to have to be constantly reminded of other people's hatred for them, through Prop 8. Other decent people out there, please help to defeat this hateful and bigoted proposition. There should be no room for this type of hate in our society.

Future ex-Catholic says:

Patrick, I am one of those gay Catholics you pondered about. And for those same reasons you mentioned, the first thing I thought Wednesday morning is to leave the church. My partner and I would attend nearly every Sunday...his mom is the choir director at our church and he is a reader. I was supposed to be in charge of the fireworks booth next year, so we were involved at a slightly higher level than most. I love the people, but now hate the institution. I figure I'll head over to one of those 'open and affirming' churches, like the UCC. I totally agree that the IRS should get involved and strip the Catholic and Mormon churches (and any other churches who asked for donations to support 8) of their tax-exempt status. If they want proof, they need not look any further than Mahoney's statement on 8's passage: "I am grateful to the Catholic Community of Los Angeles for your commitment to the institution of marriage as fashioned by God and to work with such energy to enshrine this divine plan into our State’s Constitution." Sheesh...what a pompous ass. Has he never heard of the separation of church and state?

Ex-Catholic molested by a Franciscan says:

Strip the Mormons of their tax exemptions.

And why do we continue to grant tax exemptions to the pedophile social club that goes by the name of "catholicism"? We all know why the catholic church wants to blame gay people - takes the heat off their own predators...

Jamie says:

Like many people here, I was raised in the Catholic faith and attended Jesuit schools. Even when Christianity as a whole came under attack for the words or actions of some crazy evangelical here or there, I defended Christianity because of my experience of a Catholic Church which promoted heavily social justice. However, it now appears that the social justice of Catholicism is not alive and well. It is only words and does not apply to all within society. I feel personally rejected by the Catholic Church, and I at this point in time, would not feel comfortable attending mass after how they campaigned for Prop 8. There is a seething anger that the church has decided to attack a substantial portion of its own members, apparently deciding they are not worthy members of society.

Linda says:

I am a converted catholic. I have lived in west hollywood, ca for over 30 years. I considered these "my people". I always went to the Gay Pride parade. For one thing. have friends. We all are sinners. no descrimination. That is what confession is for. Yes we talk to God directly, but He assigned certain sacraments for the fullness of Christ in us. and gave the keys to St. Peter. I have had a great struggle with prop 8. my heart was heavy and in agony. I always said no one can dictate who to love. You can love your partner. The thing is if you believe in the bible then it is His decision how to live not to offend him. The creator of the universe and us gets to tell us what to do. It's not even our body. It's rented. from OUR Father. anyway, The people I loved so much. I was to believe they were wrong. how could I live with that? There were corrupt popes in 2000 years but the laity kept it going as God promised. I had experiences that showed where life begins. No one told me. I have two babies in heaven. I just did what my mom told me to. Regrets. but God is good. He's forgiven me. I relate to St. Paul's wild conversion. The molestations were not ordered by the catholic church. I know it's the response to this that is in question. Jesus would not lay a hand on a child or berate him/her in any way. I am so sorry for anyone whose parents don't accept them as they are. No one can convert you but God. They can only pray. I just now pray that my people continue to pray for God's guidance seriously and not for convenience. I was a leftie from way back. my conversion was no accident. I'm right where God wants me to be and don't think i didn't have a heavy crosseather, but very light compared to Jesus. Anyway. I never thought I could live without sex such a libido I had. My husband whom i had lived with for 13 years before we married. He didn't believe in marriage. no one owns anyone. we were told my my study group that we had to move out. I quit that group. It is said if you wonder if it comes from God, look at the fruits. I KNOW God didn't want me to break up my family. He was a fallen away catholic. actually on the opposite. occult. people accepted him more as a witch than a catholic. He had a conversion experience also after me. I risked losing him. I don't like losing things. I told him anyway. He had had dreams about it. things did lead up to it and he was not always a nice guy, but we had a kid so i put up with it. We are now so happy even though our financial situation used to cause me great anxiety. Please don't let this chase you away from the catholic church. the teachings are sound and if you look in your heart and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your steps and the Holy Mother you will find the right decision. She loves you as a mother should. This conversion allowed me to love even more. People tell me it's not normal and I never thought I could be happy without sex. that was how i expressed my love. my sig other expressed it differently and i had to learn his language. I was in so-called love with someone else when i met him. that person told me what i wanted to hear and had the greatest chemistry in the world. like a drug. where is this guy now. Mike and I have been together 19 years and have been through it all. Our daughter is 18 and a real blessing. She knows all about our misguided past. Somehow seven years passed by and I realized I hadn't had sex in 7 years. Loyalty and family is more important. He's not like other men. He can live without it. Good looking. Girls went after him. I didn't think I could. I know he loves me. We're together all the time so I know he's not cheating. just so you know. we do everything together. and have a great love for God and each other. You can do that, too. oh we did get married about five years ago when we realized that we weren't going anywhere. Loyalty, and love, real love can live without sex. if that is possible i say go with God. What if He's right. in the book. What if. I know you wouldn't want to offend him, YOu can love your mate and be happy and still go with God. It IS possible.
With all my love,
Linda
