Queer Town: Gays Outraged Over Obama Invite to Rick Warren

President-elect Barack Obama has outraged the gay community by inviting Rick Warren, a highly influential evangelical minister, to deliver the invocation at his January 20, 2009, amd_barackrick.jpginauguration. Warren, whose Saddleback Church is located in Lake Forrest, Orange County, is the author of Purpose Driven Life and came out strong for the passage of Proposition 8.

"When it was revealed that Obama picked Rick Warren to deliver the Inaugural Invocation - I felt sucker-punched," writes Karen Ocamb, longtime lesbian journalist and news editor for Frontiers magazine.

The Obama inauguration team says that Warren was asked in a spirit of inclusion, and Chris Crain, a former editor at the Washington Blade, defends that logic.  That may sound good, but did Obama see any of the live television images of thousands and thousands of people -- straight and gay -- marching in streets across the country to protest the fact that an existing right was taken away from gays and lesbians in California? Even straight folks like Tina Dupuy, editor at MediaBistro's FishbowlLA, is taking Obama to task: "Is the KKK going to be invited too - since we're being all-inclusive?"

It was almost a year ago that I confronted then Senator Obama at a Pacific Palisades fund raiser organized by two, openly gay staffers: Jeremy Bernard and Rufus Gifford. After Obama gave a speech, the rich, famous and powerful huddled around him, shaking his hand and asking for autographs. The whole scene felt kind of weird, with few people asking the presidential candidate to tackle certain issues.

So I was standing in the middle of a kitchen in a very modern mansion in a very swanky part of town, knowing Obama would have to pass through and remembering he had been getting a lot of headlines for reaching out to "people of faith."  Which was fine with me, but he was mostly talking with Christian folks like Rick Warren, not gays and lesbians in their own churches.

Obama then walked into the kitchen. We made eye contact, and the senator walked straight towards me with his hand extended. I shook it and immediately said, "Hello, Senator, I'm gay." He nodded. Then I asked him that during his outreach to people of faith, I hoped he would also meet with gay and lesbian pastors and their congregants.

Obama, to his credit, didn't squirm away. He stood still and looked at me straight in the eyes. Then he tapped me on the chest and said when he visited churches, he made a point of telling people that homophobia had to stop.

"Yes," I replied, "but..."

Obama cut me off.

"But you're right," he said, "I need to do more."

"I certainly hope you will," I said.

Then he walked off.

I liked Obama's answer, but now his actions are showing something else. Once again, the gay community has been put on notice, which may be a good thing.  For too long, politicians like Obama have gotten a pass from gays and lesbians for certain transgressions. The times, though, have changed. In this post-Prop. 8 era, there are no more free rides.

Chris Young says:

I think it's time we hit the streets again, This time in front of saddleback church to protest the reverends support of Proposition 8 and to inform Obama that we are the ones who went to the polls to vote for him while this reverend was supporting and advocating a vote against our very rights...

The irony of this whole situation is killing me. Here is a man whom as a result of the Civil Rights Movement has been nominated the first African American President and to commemorate that he chooses someone who openly discriminates against a minority....

What is he thinking?

Obama has the worst time with picking pastors. First Wright and now this guy. Obama Should let someone else pick them, maybe Michelle or one of the kids.

Diana says:

I am all for President elect Obama asking for this great man of God to invite the Lord in to his presidency by asking the Lords blessing on the new administration at his invocation. Gay rights by the way has nothing to do with the Civil Rights movement. The Black people were being discrimminated against as citizens of the United states and they only wanted what was due to them as in the Bill of rights and the Constitution that all men are created equal under the creator. For over 100 years their rights as US. citizens had been violated, not because of their sexual affliation or gender. Martin Luthor King would turn over in his grave right now. A minority wants to impose their views about sexual issues and press them on the rest of this country which by the very act is morally wrong. The country has spoken clearly on this issue.
This isn't about if this man is for or against Gays.He is a man of God and Obama wants God's blessings on his presidency and this is the very man to do it.
Why can't people see we have taken God out of this country for so long now that it is beginning to show. If we remove God from this country he will remove His blessings on us. Scripture and history has spoken plainly on this subject. This country was founded by Godly men on Godly prinicipals. George Washington spoke clearly about that in his first address as President. My question is just because a certain majority or minority feels left out why do they have to insist on imposing their views on the rest of this country when marriage always will be the unity of one man and one woman, and the people of this country have spoken loud and clear about that issue.

William says:

Diana, with all due respect, Rick Warren does NOT represent the views of either most Christians or most people in this country. Even if he did, his homophobia alone should disqualify him from such a position of honor in Obama's inauguration.

Being gay is NOT morally wrong. And marriage by scriptural edict is polygamous, one man & as many women as a man can afford to "marry". I don't believe most Americans would support polygamy.

Martin Luther King was an early supporter of civil rights for gay men and lesbians & had openly gay men in his organization. He knew and understood that discrimination against any minority hurt society in general.

Finally, the tyranny of a majority "defending" marriage against a minority who seek equality before the law, is not a laudable goal. Civil marriage licenses are routinely granted to convicted criminals, Down syndrome adults, and drunks on a Saturday night binge in Las Vegas- as long as they're heterosexual. I don't believe that two men or two women in a committed relationship should be denied a marriage license because it offends someone's religious "principles". That kind of reasoning was used to deny individuals in interracial marriages equality in the law, and such marriages were also considered a threat to society.

Diana, Thank you for being bold. God is calling people to be bold, to stand for His Word. God's Kingdom is at hand and people's hearts are truly hardened. Every soul is looking for hope and peace. God is love and people have lack of it and lack of God in their lives. It's not about race, about sexual preference, it's about God's will. I hope our new President will also have a spirit of boldness to be lead by God and to deliver God's will in obedience. No matter what we face in this society and this world, God is still in control and in Him will we put our trust.
