Queer Town: "No on 8" Executive Committee Revealed

Late yesterday, gay rights activist and blogger Michael Petrelis accomplished the seemingly impossible--he found and published the 16 "principal officers" of the "No on 8" campaign's executive committee. If you think that kind of information would have been easily available, you are very, very wrong.  As Petrelis writes in his post, "It's easier to locate the names of the Chinese politburo than the names of the ruling body of No on 8."

Indeed. Despite the fact that the executive committee spent over $40 million of donations from the general public to defeat Proposition 8, and despite the fact that they were fighting a battle to maintain the legal right for gays and lesbians from anywhere in the world to marry in California, the leaders of the "No on 8" campaign have consistently refused to name its 16 principal officers.

Going back to October, I first asked for a list of names and no one at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center or Equality California -- two of the main organizations involved in the "No on 8" campaign -- could "remember" who sat on the executive committee or its sub-committees. Petrelis started his quest even earlier, requesting information in September.

I never understood the reason for the secrecy, and no one gave me a good explanation for it. But whenever people in power are hiding basic information about who's running the show, it's usually because they don't want to be blamed for one thing or another. In this case, the "No on 8" executive committee probably didn't want to take the fall for the debacle that happened on November 4, 2008, when a slim majority of voters in California passed Proposition 8.

(Side Note: I always found it curious that Lorri Jean, one of the members of the executive committee, was incredibly quick to divert all attention away from the failures of the "No on 8" campaign -- which were many -- and point the finger at the Mormon church. Jean, if you remember, first started the Mormon backlash on Wednesday, November 5 at a rally in West Hollywood, whipping people up and announcing a demonstration at the Los Angeles Mormon Temple on Thursday, November 6. She continued with her anti-Mormon rant for the next several days whenever she could grab a microphone. Then Jean skipped town for several weeks, and returned from vacation this month, according to press reports.)

Anyhow, here are the people who spent your political contributions and led the losing cause to defeat Proposition 8, which is now costing more money to repeal and has caused a ripple effect throughout the country where politicians in such places as New York and Minnesota have stalled pro-gay marriage legislation.

"No on 8" Executive Committee, Principal Officers:

Geoff Kors, executive director, Equality California;
Lorri Jean, chief executive officer, Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center;
Kate Kendell, executive director, National Center for Lesbian Rights;
Michael Fleming, executive director, David Bohnett Foundation;
Marty Rouse, national field director, Human Rights Campaign;
Heather Carrigan, ACLU of Southern California;
Oscar De La O, Beinestar Human Services in Los Angeles;
Sue Dunlop, Los Angeles;
Maya Harris, ACLU of Northern California;
Don Howes, Los Angeles;
Dennis Herrera, City Attorney of San Francisco;
Dr. Delores Jacobs, chief executive officer, San Diego LGBT Community Center;
Joyce Newstadt, San Francisco;
Tawal Panyacosit, director, Asian and Pacific Islander Equality in San Francisco;
Rashid Robinson, Los Angeles;
Kevin Tilden, communications/political consultant, San Diego;
and "No on 8" treasurer, Steve Mele, founder of ML Associates in West Hollywood.

Equality California will be hosting an "Equality Summit" in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 24, but it's not open to the general public and the organization has set certain rules for how journalists can cover the event. Many of the "No on 8" leaders will no doubt be in attendance.

(Update: Equality California has recently lifted all restrictions on the press covering the Equality Summit.)

Andrew Velez says:

...and identifying those people who worked to defeat Prop8 is supposed to accomplish exactly what? Are they supposed to be pilloried for the defeat? It seems to me this is another example of self-destructive divisiveness within the GLBT community. If you're not happy with who's been leading, then get off your butt, organize and to borrow a phrase, "be the change you want." I couldn't care less who was on that Board. What matters now is addressing the injustices effectively and beating up on each other is not going to accomplish that.

To me, it is yet another example of the disfunction of GLBT organizations, where even the most basic standards of transparency and disclosure are not adhered to.

It is absolutely ridiculous that people who dispersed over $40 million in public contributions are trying to keep their identities a secret.

Chester Bannister says:

Dennis Herrera...I wonder if the public is to believe that he expended no publicly-funded resources in running this secretive campaign. If a government official had been a secret member of the "Yes on H8" campaign, would we not be demanding answers to that question? Consistency...

Volunteer says:

So, now that this list has been made public (half of which was already available via the FAQ that the LA Gay & Lesbian Ctr published in the days after the election: (http://www.lagaycenter.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Prop_8_FAQ), what now?

Demand that everyone at the head of every LGBT and other org who dedicated their time and resources to doing SOMETHING to fight Prop 8 be fired?

Do you have a long list of qualified applicants eager to fill those positions?

It's really pathetic that some queer journalists and the media in general are continuing to put all the blame on the No campaign, as if they "lost" what was an assured victory.

I can understand the psychology, though...It's easier to blame some group you gave money to, which in your estimation did not perform up to expectations, than it is to believe that your neighbors, Californians of all people, would prove to be bigots with their ballots. (A narrow majority of them, but nonetheless...)

How exactly did you, Patrick, contribute to the No campaign, either through volunteering or donation? (Be specific.)

And Patrick, what exactly are the media restrictions at the Equality Summit to which you refer?

From the confirmation email sent to participants:
"I also want to remind folks that in the spirit of transparency, the
Equality Summit is fully open to the press. This means reporters will be
attending the plenary sessions as well as break-out groups. If you DO
NOT want to be quoted by the press for their stories, please notify your
break-out session moderator as well as reporters in attendance.
Otherwise, anything you say at the break-out sessions and at the Summit
generally is subject to appear in media reports."

When is your story coming on the secret meetings that the Mormon church leadership held to organize Prop 8 support, and the lack of media access to the Family Research Council's inner workings?

Gwendolyn says:

I realize this article didn't touch on the presidential results but.....I'm really sick of continually reading Prop 8's passage described as a win by "a slim majority," while Obama's win is either described or implied to be a massive blowout. Prop 8 and Obama won by almost the exact same percentage. As you can see from the months of news, 52/53% is NOT a slim majority--it's a solid win.

Also, if I were a "No on 8" officer, I would be very scared to have my name out there--as those of us on the "Yes" side know, these Gestapo-like losers don't mess around!

lots of web sites expose the names, addresses and workplaces of mormons who contributed to 8, apparently so they could be harassed, attacked, or forced out of their employment. please help ensure equality by making the same disclosures for "no on 8" officials.

Dear "Volunteer,"

Why are you hiding behind a pseudonym? What are you hiding? And why are you so worked up? Maybe because the piece hit a nerve? And were you at the Stonewall Young Democrats meeting on Sunday in West Hollywood? You reference something that I said there.

As for your other stuff, I'm really inclined to not answer someone who won't reveal himself. But I don't have anything to hide, so I'll tell you a few things. I'm a journalist, which means I have to approach and present both sides of the Prop. 8 story. As a result, I can't contribute to any political campaign because there would be, at the very least, an appearance of a conflict of interest.

But I did write many, many stories on Prop. 8 and gay marriage and attended many, many events, starting in May, 2008 and through the end of the year. So my contribution was getting the word out about Prop. 8 and gay marriage outside of the gay press and to a larger audience. You should read my other stories, and I think you'll see I put my heart and soul in the Prop. 8 issue. For me, journalism is my form of activism.

As for the restrictions, we have been told that certain things are for attribution and some things are not. EQCA has been playing a game with the press for weeks now. Don't follow your leaders blindly, Volunteer. There's a lot happening behind the scenes that you know nothing about, and they want to keep it that way.

Thanks for reading the piece, Patrick

Accountable Joe says:

Thank you Patrick. We need to demand more accountability from our 'leaders'. Why have they been hiding?

This kind of insularity is part of the cause of their failed strategy.

There is a saying: Failure is an orphan and success has many mothers. In this case, they would be claiming credit had they won; they deserve blame for losing and running a lousy campaign.

We are entitled to know who they are and to hear from them before we decide to donate another thin dime -- or in the alternative, clean house before the next challenge.

We also are entitled to a full accounting of where that $40 M went and how much is left over. It was our donations... we are completely entitled to know how it was spent.

Rose Greene, CFP says:

Again,...Patrick we are all asking, what is the point of the words you wrote?
Patrick, are you getting the message that you are old news. This newest attack is enough already and, smells of the last 8 years of mean spirited talk and we all appear to want it to stop it. Have you missed the spirit of this amazing week where we had our first chance in a long time to feel positive. The rest of us are busy working to make change. And excuse me but who are you anyway?

Rose Greene, CFP
Proud member of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

Hi Rose,

I really had to laugh at your comments. Whenever someone tries to insult me, I know I'm doing my job and hitting the right notes. Thank you for confirming that for me. And none of what I wrote was mean-spirited or an attack. It's all very, very factual--sometimes the truth hurts, eh? And are you actually comparing me to George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Jerry Falwell, and that whole gang? Now that's mean-spirited, Rose, and not very factual.

But besides me, there's a larger issue here. It's about people who refuse to take responsibility for a major debacle that has affected millions of people's lives. And they want to keep running things, but haven't shown any of that "change" you're talking about. That's what makes me nervous, and that's why I keep bringing this stuff up. I don't want to lose next time, and I want my legal right to marry the man I love back. Take care, Patrick
